Cacti 35th Infantry Guestbook

3800. To/For the Cacti Assn webmaster, regimental historian, and all Cacti with relatives. Found the following online, which I wish to share with all above mentioned... (Note that by domain being ".mil", it is evidently thereby hosted by an Official USARMY-server). the Tropic Lightning Museum website: http://www.25idl.army.mil/tropic%20lightning%20museum/index.html After having checked the 25th ID Assn website, I was unable to locate this link in its linkspage. If interrest exists within Cacti Assn, would Cacti Assn webmaster consider to include above link in Cacti Assn websites own linkspage, aswell as perhaps also alert the Board Of Members of the 25th ID Assn of the existence of the above website? Take Good Care!

3798. I am the widow of Henry L. Aderholt, who was shot out of a helicopter in February 1970 and died of those wounds on December 12, 1972. He was transfered to Japan and then on to Ft. Benning, GA. I never received any of his personal possession after he left Vietnam. His sister, Karen Hopkins and I are trying to get his name added to the Vietnam Wall but have had no luck yet. We will never forget, we will never give up.

3793. Yesterday, 9/17/2010, in conjunction with the Ind observance of Nat'l POW/MIA Day, two restored RVN choppers left from the Annual Vietnam Veterans reunion grounds in Kokomo, IN. I was honored to be aboard one, a former gunship. Along with the other, a restored Medvac both flew from there to a fly-over at the POW/MIA ceremonies @ the WWII Memorial in downtown Indy. (Approx 30 min each way.) Both choppers landed on the grounds of the Amer Legion Mall, where they became part of a static display. I was very happy and proud to be asked to participate, and felt honored to represent A/2/35, and indeed all of the Cacti, ALR Post 145 & VFW Post 1120. Rudy & Dave, Jerry & Richard, Jamie, Carl & Herman, all flew with me again. I had forgotten over the years how their presence, comforted me. They were there in my heart!

3784. I just wanted to thank everyone in your esteemed Regiment, past, present, and future, for serving our country with courage. I found this page while, oddly enough, researching for a jungle themed Warhammer 40k Imperial Guard regiment, and spent hours reading. It's great to hear the stories from the people that were there, and fought so I can have the freedom to play my wargames safely, and that if I can honor the legacy of the brave soldiers, even in my nerdy little wargame, I will, and have. I'll send pictures of the models, and look forward to braggin about the real soldiers while I lead my play ones to victory. Cheers! George

3772. If you've got 'em, we want 'em. Orders that is. We have just completed a project of attempting to locate 1000 Cacti who were previously presumed to be unaware of us. The great majority of these were from 1969 and 1970. We would love to work toward finding more of our old buddies from years prior to this. Our method of doing this is through old orders and lots of hard research. If you have old orders laying around that include anyone who served with the 35th we would love to have a copy so that we can continue our efforts of locating as many ex-Cacti as we can. You can e-mail me copies as attachments to the e-mail address below or snail mail to 1335 N. Broad St/ Wood bury, NJ 08096 ATTN Doc Hall

Just want to remind everyone that the membership voted last year and reaffirmed this year a desire to raise funds for the purpose of erecting a monument near the Infantry Museum at Fort Benning. To this end, as I understand it, we are not quite half way to our goal but we have made good progress over the past year. We need your support if we are to make our goal of $25,000 raised for this lasting monument to all of us. Please go to the front page of our web site and get Mike Tryon's address to make your donation. Any donation large or small will help us reach our goal. We need to get this done sooner than later. 3767. I would like to take a moment and dedicate a few words to those "Cacti" who fought in WWII. The 35th fought in Guadalcanal, and the liberation of the Philippines. My Father, William F. Farrar Sr. was a Private in G Co, 2nd Battalion, 35th Regiment. He made it through the entire war and was discharged in 1945. Like many soldiers who fought in the jungle he suffered with Malaria and other foot diseases until his death a few years back. Although he came to Guadalcanal in the mopping up phase, he was smack in the middle of the fighting in Luzon Philippines. There was a book written by a Mr. Rutherfoord which detailed in sketches the 165 days of continuous fighting the regiment endured in Luzon. My father, in his copy of that book, provided personal comments below those written by Mr. Rutherfoord. That book is a treasure to me which someday will go to my children. On another note, my father often spoke of one important battle in the small borough of Lupao. American Infantry were up against Japanese armor. Although it is given little historic fanfare, it was a deadly fight which cost the Regiment dearly. I believe the story of this battle, and bravery of the Cacti men would make a good book, or even a movie crediting the entire 35th Regt. To those Cacti Soldiers, I salute you.

3765. I was very apprehensive about going to a reunion. All the unfounded scenarios that played through my mind--What if somebody is carrying a 44 year old grudge? What if they're a bunch of slobbering drunks who encourage me to fall off the wagon?(Been sober 3 years) What if it's the most miserable time of my life? What if--what if--what if---. Well folks, I went and it was one of the most wonderful, healing experiences of my life. Had some great times, enjoyed some wonderful meals with some truely great people, and marveled at the current Cacti carrying on the tradition. Purely impressive young Soldiers! Thank you for all your efforts putting this reunion together

I was able to connect with fellow Vets that I haven't seen in 42-43 years. It was great meeting with the active members of the 35th and a special thanks to them for there help with the Color Guard. 3759. Hello,my Cacti brothers and sisters. My fiance, Kristy Peterson, and I had the honor and priviledge to attend this year's 2-35 Cacti Reunion in Pittsburgh.Upon receiving the news that I would be a part of this special event I was very excited. Since my hometown of Stahlstown,Pennsylvania is only about 45 mins from Pittsburgh, I was looking forward to the opportunity to spend some time home with my family, at the same time, I was enthusiastic about the chance to talk with other 2-35 Cacti verterns from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Nothing prepared me for the feelings of comraderie, honor, pride, and brotherhood that I would feel over the past several days. I wanted to extend a warm thank you to everyone that made me and my fiance feel like members of a family and for all the wonderful and entertaining conversations. With myself being an active member of Cacti 2-35 and my fiance Kristy being an active serving medic stationed st Fort Knox, Kentucky, we both felt a huge honor while attending the event and very humbled by all the thank you's that we received from other veterns and their families. After talking with many of you I felt lucky and grateful to be able to share our stories together. There is a bond and connection that we are have together as veterns and members of Cacti that is very hard to describe. But one thing that is true is that things really don't change much over the years. Even though several decades separated the wars that we all experienced, there are so many similiar experiences we all went through. There is something special that we all have together, a brotherhood that will never fade with the passing of years. I look forward to keeping in touch with all of you and sincerly enjoyed the time we shared together in Pittsburgh. I would love to attend future reunions and look forward to seeing you all again in the years to come. Thanks again for everything.

3751. Hi fellow Cacti brothers. Have not made a post for sometime.Got caught up in other things and got so busy I lost track of time and website. Just to give a little about me incase someone may remember me or was in same plt or sqd because I'm still not sure but have made contact with a couple guys that were in my unit. I was in B2/35th 3rd Bde Task Force 25th Inf Div. before it was redesinated 4th Inf Div. Our base camp was around Pleiku and operated around Duc Pho. I was there from Jan67-68. Also was in Khon Toun, I Drang Valley and had 1st Cav work with us and and hueys had sharks teeth painted on them that supported us. I would like to give my personal thanks to Bill Henson and Dick Arnold for all their help to me in the past. Cacti website has been a tremendous help in verify and confirming things, contacts I was in, KIA's and basically giving me closure on things I needed to know. One last thing even though its been 40 years, I was company armorer for our company for shortimers before I rotated back to USA and had the opportunity to come out to the field and exchange the old bolts that were giving our m-16's problems for a newer bolt that didn't jam. Just thought I would throw that in to see if anyone remembers that if you see this post.

3750. Opertion Wayne Force - I was one of the Air Force Tactical Air Control Party radio operators who deployed to LZ Washington with the 2/35. It was on experience for us due to the location of the LZ on top of a hill and the fact that our radio jeep had to be brought in by helicoptor. They lowered the ramp and flew the aircraft out from under our jeep while we stood on the brakes to keep from rolling down the hill. We ended up located right next to the helipad which required us to lower our antenna everytime an aircraft came in. When it rained we had a river running between the wheels of our vehicle. The first few days of the operation, we were the main communications with base camp due to equipment problems. I do have some photos of LZ Washington which show the camp. To everyone, I say Welcome Home Brothers. Bob Veigel USAF TACP ROMAD

3747. Dear Cacti, As many of you know, our son, Sudha, passed away in an auto accident last Tuesday, July 13th. He was 18 years old, and heading off to the University of New Hampshire in the fall. He had attended reunions with our family to Buffalo, Orlando, and Louisville. So he knew many of you and enjoyed his contacts with dad's army "buds" and their families. He had been awarded a Cacti scholarship for next fall. The knock on the door by the police at 3:00 AM in the pouring rain is every parent's worst nightmare. No getting around that. But the outpouring of support, overwhelming in its scope and breadth, will be treasured forever. Cacti, community members, friends, family, and even strangers have been by our sides through it all. Cacti have called, emailed, offered to get on a plane, prayed, you name it. In the back of my mind, I always knew that you were there should I need help. But, when something like this happens, I am reminded just how close we are as brothers. A million thank you's would not suffice. I wish I could give each of you a hug, and tell you that we will be all right in the end. And that you could return the exact favor. But I can't. So consider yourself the recipient of a a virtual hug that will have to do instead. I do not know if we can get to the reunion in Pittsburgh. If not, we will be there in spirit. Thank you, and I love you all. Jim "Mac" McDevitt 1/35th Infantry C Co. 4th Platoon Republic of Vietnam Feb. 68 to Jan. 69

3742. The Cambodia 1970 Rendezvous in Reno, NV this past June 15-19 at the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino to honor the veterans from the 4th Infantry Div. and 3-506th was a huge success. We had some 72 attendees, including members from the 3-506th, 3-8th Inf., 1-12th Inf., 6-29th Artillery, 485th Medical Bn. (Dust-off 23) and Naval Intellence, but unfortunately no one attending from the 2-35th. Several had planned to attend, however. Officers, Platoon Sergeants and Medics wre presented with a 101st Airborne traditional screaming eagle on an oak base with engraved plate. All attendees who attended and participated in the Cambodia Operation--Binh Tay I--received a special frameable "Cambodian Incursion" Certificate of Recognition with their unit crest, rank and name, unit. The certificate, as well as photos and an AAR (After Action Report) of the reunion can be viewed at: www.currahee.org. The AAR will be posted shortly. Attendees from each of the units attending have expressed the desire to come together again in a year or so to renew the friendship and sharing that took place this reunion. The book--Twelve Days In May--is a huge success per attendees and others who have purchased their copy. If you want a copy, go to: www.cambodiaincursion.com. 3735. On the Cacti KIA page there is a post by Alonzo Jones regarding Staff Sergeant Ronald Kent and whether or not his body was recovered on 1-20-67 the day he was KIA. I contacted William (Teddy Bear) Carpenter who was a member of my squad when Kent was killed and he said that he personally pulled Kent's body back when he got hit and he never heard anything about him being MIA so it must have been somebody elses uniform the NVA was wearing when the OP took the NVA under fire who was wearing the Staff Sergeant uniform. Hope this clears up any doubts as to whether Kent's body was recovered. Happy 4th of July to all Cacti. Chuck Norris Former Recon Platoon Sgt HHC 1/35 Inf 1966

3727. The question raised by Charles Rea regarding a majority membership vote to schedule a Cacti reunion at Branson, MO is not one I'm familiar with; at least I can't find any record of one in the archives. Nor have I as Secretary written such a resolution. That's not a rap on Branson. I'm originally from Missouri, and am partial to the state. As I understand it, the reunions are held in metro areas to make it easier for Cacti to fly into an airport big enough to make connecting flights and park a 737. Available banquet facilities are a particularly significant issue for our Saturday banquet, as well. I don't know about the gambling and golf, Charles mentioned. Neither activity is of interest to me. Seeing my Cacti family each year provides me with all the incentive I need to go to our reunions.

How come this vote was over rid. I can understand some wanting the atmosphere, of a larger area. Gambling and Golfing. Branson has a good golf course. Gam. I played one game of cards in Nam and lost. Still managed to hump down the hill and look for the Blackhawk Crash Memorial. When I found it there was a young couple placing flowere by the Stone. It was Cpl Josh Harmon's Sister. We talked for a while, took pictures and I left a Flag along with Website pictures of the 10 Soldiers attached below the Flag on the wooden dowel. Josh's sister said she might come by at the reunion in Pittsburgh. I hope she does! Well, better sign off for now 'cause my 'Dogs' are really barking!(Haven't walked that much since Sep. 67!) 3710. My husband, James Oris Blankenship, was killed in VN on Jan 8, 1968. We met just before he graduated from OCS at Ft Benning (Class #10-66). We dated while he was assigned to jump school at Ft Benning. It was truly God's design to have us fall in love and have what little time we had together. We were married at Ft Sill, Oklahoma where we were blessed with a son before he left for VN (Douglas James, now 42). Our son's twin daughter (Julia Mae), died 7 days after birth. In those 2 months of fatherhood before going to VN, I saw a man torn between the desire to be with his family and raise his son and his loyalty to his country. We mourn his loss each day. And feel sad for those who never had the chance to spend time with this wonderful and beautiful person.

3693. Troopers, my latest book--Twelve Days In May--is now available. The pages of this book present the factual story of the 4th Infantry Division Cambodian Incursion in May 1970 - not only the role of my battalion, the 3-506th, but the story behind each of the five other 4th Infantry battalions and their support units--aviation, artillery, medical, engineers, and logistics--who participated in the campaign. The men who fought the battles and faced the enemy gallantly deserve more than being recorded as only numbers and statistics on faded archives pages, or having their names etched for eternity on the Vietnam Wall. Behind these statistics are countless untold stories that bring out the devastation of war in vivid detail and told by those who were there, including the "Cacti Blue" troopers. Unlike other books written about the 4th ID's involvement, read what really happened in Binh Tay I. You can order the book on the internet or directly from me at: www.currahee.org. I think you will like the book. I will be honored to autograph a copy for you, if ordered from www.currahee.org. BTW, we have organized a special reunion in Reno, NV, June 15-19 at the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino to honor all of you who participated in that northern thrust into Cambodia. Come join us and be honored. Check out the details on www.currahee.org to see who all have already signed up. Peter was in the 35th Infantry Division Cacti Company B from 1958 - 1960. Thank you for you time. Also, if there is any news of any reunions regarding these veterans, please advise. Thank you so very much. God Bless all of you! Leila

3681. As we slowly, and sadly, approach Menorial weekend I would like to thank each and every one you MEN and WOMEN that preserved the America I know and love! Spec 4 Russel L. Crawford "celebrated" his birthday during this weekend each year, I was a louse of a nephew to not have googled LZ-10 Alpha before he passed away this past year. IF I had done so I would have known so much more, understood so much more about Russ and YOU AMERICAN HERO's. God bless, save and forgive each of you for the burdens you carry for the sacrices you all gave...some more than others, but each of you AND your spouses gave SO VERY MUCH! "Thank you" sounds cheap in comparison, but please, I beg you, understand that most of us fully understand and fully comprehend that what you sacrificed of your youth and your mature years, as well as what your spouses have endured are so very much undervalued by much of the current American population...but also understand that that in NO WAY will you ever be in need if you Veterans step up and request what you NEED in support as you age finely like a good wine. Thank you may sound cheap, but if you speak up and request assistance I know you will receive it. Thank you again you GREAT AMERICAN's! LT. Daniel Hyde, I drive by where you rest frequently, and Modesto thinks of you every day. LT. Larry Connor was and IS a man of honor.

3678. I tried this post before, but it did not go up. O.K. help me out...C co 2-35th, 4-67-4-68. We had a poker game at a firebase, I think it would have been in early 1968 shortly before my DEROS. I won some money, the guy that owed me money told me I could take a coat he bought in Australia on R&R. I took the coat home. I think it was stored at Pleiku if memory serves me correct. I found the leather coat to be too big, and had a stain from mildew. I ended up swapping it at Ft. Lewis to one of my fellow cadre. I swapped it for my wedding band. I still have the band almost 42 years later. I just wanted to thank my fellow Cacti, I am sorry I can't recall who it was? Does your memory fail you like mine? Cacti Forever! Dan LaRoche

3657. I'm writing this in the memory of my cousin George E. Edden. He was like a big brother to me, his last three years of high school he lived with us. I remember the day he told my dad that he volunteered in the army. My dad was sad but knowing George he was doing the right thing for our Country. He joined the army when i was twelve years old and everyday I watched the morning news. Just to try to see him. I wrote letter and sent pictures and so did he. It was my first year of hunting season and he was proud of me. George was just a good old country boy and had good values. I remember the day when my aunt called and told us George was MIA. Then a few days later we got the call that he was killed in action. I will never forget that day. My dad,mom and I cried for a long time. It was a typical Montana day. It was cold and there was alot of snow on the ground. He was killed April 5th 1968 at LZ Mile High. Im very sure that he was a very brave man. His funeral was the first funeral that I've ever been to, and they played taps, I cried my eyes out. There's not a week that goes by that I don't think about him. I named my son after him. Rest in Piece George.

3656. I am trying to recall an incident which I think occured on 27 Aug 68, I remember the date because it was my birthday. I was B Co. 2nd Platoon, and I was still a FNG. I don't recall names of individuals I was with, or specific details, or where exactly we were, nor did I ask any questions but this is what I remember. I was a member of a small squad of individuals, maybe six of us, sent out from a firebase we were using for a few days, to moniter any enemy movement on a trail which was quite some distance from base. I remember we climbed up into trees and watched for charlie, and finally, 3 or 4 appeared. We came out of the trees, engaged charlie and elimated them, I remember my weapon was an M-79 at the time. I have checked after action reports and timeline index, and can find no information regarding this engagement. There is more to this story, and I will put it into a War Story if anyone can coaberate this info.

3655. Thank you for all that you have done, in creating the 35th inf. regiment association. I served with the 2/35inf from May of 1968 through Aug. of 1969. I remember going from LZ to LZ, but I just can't remember time frames and the LZ's. I remember scottie and Ranger but nothing else. Does the association have a chronological history of the 35th during this period of time. Our unit moved often and was often designated as the first unit to set-up a perimeter. I remember taking over an LZ which had been occupied by the 9th or the 25th inf. we were there for several weeks, while the rotting bodies or portions thereof still remained on the concertina wire. Can you clear me up on the specific unit. I'd like to get my own history in order. Thanks alot, Lisandro

3646. Hi All it has been quite a while since I have checked into the Cacti - Lots of Great Changes Phil. I was wondering if anyone - and I know someone does and may have already answered the question - exactly where was Mile High. I was looking on Google Earth and think I might have found it but don't know since I don't know which way and how far we went out of Kontum. The Co-ordinates I came up with are 14° 27' 31.07"N by 107° 44' 20.77E at and elevation of 5,800'. The one thing that makes this stand out is the small bump of a hill near this summit. If it is the right mtn that was where I think the Marines that were there before us had left a 105. Any Help?? - Phillip

He commanded the division through the prep for deployment to VN and the first year of combat. Later he was a Field Force Commander, the las CG of US Forces in VN and Chief of Staff of the Army. In WWII he served with the OSS in Asia, commanded a Battalion and regiment in Korea and later the 25th Div, He was a soldiers soldier and certainly an officer and a gentlemen, a sad day for the Army and the Tropical Lightning. 3625. I happened to stumble on your site while looking for a certain shoulder patch. My brother, Michael G. Kindred served in your organization from Sept 1967 to 9 Feb 1968 where he and another member lost their life during a major battle. Anyway, your site has provided me with additional info about what had happened to him, never knew he was killed by friendly fire. Also, did not know he was awarded the bronze medal. When I went up to his casket to say my final good-bye, the medals on his uniform were the Purple Heart, Nation Defense and the two vietnam campaign ribbons. There was never a mention of the bronze medal. Next time I speak with his wife, I'll have to ask her about it. You do have a fantastic site which I have found very informative. There will be alot of information I will draw from it and place it in our family history. I thank you for your time and effort and the information you have provided. I'm sure as I absorb what you all have available, other questions will arise. Until then, please take care and thanks for all you and your group have done. Good bless you all and may the good Lord continue to lay is loving hands on you and yours. Ronald P. Kindred, MSGT., USAF (RET)

3622. In 1993 the commander of my Military Order Of The Purple Heart Chapter in Oklahoma City asked me to speak on behalf of the MOPH at the Memorial Day ceremonies at the state capitol. As I began to think about what I would like to say I thought about what I would say had I given my life for freedom and I could speak from the grave. I decided that I could be the voice of those fallen men and women that so bravely gave their lives on the battlefields in defense of freedom. Here is what I think they would like to say: THE VOICE OF MEMORIAL DAY I am the voice of America's fallen patriots. I am a soldier, a sailor, a marine, an airman and a coastguardsman. I am the young man or woman who gave up my job, and left my beloved family to don the uniform of my country and fight for freedom in far away lands when called to do so. I fought with General George Washington at Valley Forge, I fought for the rights of fellow Americans alongside Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg. I was there in World War 1 again fighting for freedom and World War 2 with General Eisenhower. I struggled across the frozen battlefields of Korea, I fought in the steaming jungles of South Vietnam. I stood on th sands of Saudia Arabia as I liberated Kuwait. I fought in places many of you never heard of such as, Old Baldy, Heartbreak Ridge, Hill 881, Pork Chop Hill, The Chosin Reservoir, Hobo Woods, the Ia Drang Valley and Khe Sanh. I have always been there when freedom and democracy were in danger. I am not here with you today because I gave my life for what I believed in. I died in the arms of my fellow soldiers whose tears for my passing mixed with my blood as he held my head in his arms and comforted me as I left this life. I am not here with you in body, but never doubt that I am here with you in spirit. I am there in the furls of the Star and Stripes you raised in my honor this morning. My face is on the statues you carved in Bronze to remember me. My name is on the cold black Granite Wall you erected in Washington D. C. I am there in the memories of my comrades I fought side by side with with in my quest for freedom. I am the memory in the hearts of those I left behind, those whom I loved with all my heart, yet found the courage to insure they would experience the taste of freedom forever more by the giving of my life. I am the first ray of Sunshine you see on a bright sunny day. I am in the memories of my children who grew up without my guidance, never to know the love I held for them so deep in my heart. I don't wish to be remembered as a hero. If my actions in battle were heroic, it was not to make me a hero. It was because I placed freedom and democracy above all else and I was willing to give my life to defend them. If I saved the life of my fellow soldier and gave my own in doing so, it was not to make me a hero, it was because he was my comrade in arms and he fought for the same principles I fought for. He would have done the same for me given the chance. If you do wish to remember me as a hero, remember me as the champion of freedom and democracy for the greatest nation on earth. The United States of America. I hope that you will never forget me and the sacrifice I made for you and others to live free. Remember me when you cast your votes for the leaders of this great nation who must carry on the principles I fought and died for. When you tell my children of me, instill in them the same principles I fought and died for and tell them also of my deep and everlasting love for them that remains even in my passing. Tell them that I look down from my home in heaven upon their shining faces every morning and I guide their footsteps through lifes treacherous journeys. Tell them also to pass my memory to their children and their children's children and let them know that I gave my life for them to live free. As you travel this great nation from sea to shining sea, take in the splendor of the Purple Mountain Majesties, the amber waves of grain, the children running to and fro as they play, remember that this freedom is not free, no it is not free. It has been paid for with my blood and the blood of my comrades and forefathers, who just as I, placed freedom and democracy above all else and gave our lives in defense of it. Cherish this freedom I have given you, fight for it to the very end to keep it sacred, for no sacrifice is too great to let it slip from your grasp. If you will do these things, then I will be with you again the next time you come to honor me and I will reach out and touch you just as I have today and I will rest in peace knowing the greatest nation on Earth the United States of America shall not perish. God bless America. Written May 19th, 1993 Charles E. (Chuck) Norris Former Recon Platoon Sergeant Ist Bn 35th Inf, 25th Inf Div Vietnam 1966

3617. Just wanted to say hope everyone has a good year and wish happiness to all the men I served with from march to the end of July 1968.I made my first reunion last summer in reno.I had tried to attend 3 times before but personal circumstances prevented my being there. I was so happy to see some of the men in which I served as their medic in A co. 1/35 inf. 3rd plt. during that time, My great fortune was to see again Robert Floyd, Robert Spielman,Thomas Kehoe,Sonney Danhaus and met a man that was wounded days before I got to the company,David Manrique, really nice guy. Im happy that we got together,Bob Floyd and I are hot rod and car nuts from way back.We used to talk about them in nam and found that we still enjoy talking about them and working on them.Bob has a 50S ford truck with a 327 in it,really a one of a kind that is getting rare and Im going to restore a 55 chevy hardtop" God willing".Hope to document it with pictures as I go through the process. I have also met Harry "Butch" Hooven and we are motorcycle fans and we commo through to email and phone at times. Plan on seeing him in July.Thank you men for being part of my life even though it was a short period,I feel like you are my brothers and have never forgotten you over the years.Yall take care and keep in touch.Proud to have served with this special group of men. 3613. I was just reading War Stories and I ran across a story by PLT LDR Vaughn Brauer. He told about the Big Snake by 1st Platoon B CO in June of 1966. He asked who the 5th person from the left was in the picture. That person was Winson or Winston. He was the RTO when I came to the platoon in June of 1966 as the platoon medic after the snake picture. I remember him telling me he volunteered to go to Vietnam. Yes he was injured in May of 1967. Schrapnel to his groin and backside. I was in the mash unit filling out his medical card along with many others. I was told from someone, I think it was John Lorts that Winson had passed away from cancer.

3610. Hi! I'm hoping someone here can help me or at least point me in the right direction. My husband's father was in Vietnam. He was shot badly while he was there and spent many months in the hospital recovering. He died from complications almost 8 years later when my husband was only 6 years old. He knows very little about his father or his service to our great nation. I surprised him with his father's military records and duplicate metals for our wedding anniversary last year. Part of the records include the award of the silver star detailing his brave acts on March 12, 1967 the details in this letter are overwhelming to all that read. We are unbelievably proud to have it along witht he metals displayed in our home. On the letter it says he was assigned to Co A, 2d Bn, 35th Infantry, 3d Bde TF, 25th Infantry Division, APO 96355. I'm not 100% sure what all this means, but I have seen references to several of these things here on your site. I was wondering if there may be anyone here who may have served with him or can point me to any groups who may have served with him. ANY help would be MUCH appreciated. Thank you to all those on this site who provided the most noble of service to your country.

(The daily journal of the day shows that LZ Jean took about 42 75mm rifle rocket hits that night and one of them hit a bunker) George says he was in the bunker with a brand new buck sergeant when it was hit. He would like to speak with this buck Sgt to help substantiate his claim. Others of you may of been there and know this to be true. Believe it or not in his rejection letter the person who signed the letter based part of the rejection on the fact that George admits he was not wearing hearing protection that night. He was a man. 1st Lieut. Larry Conner, Commanding 3rd Platoon, Company A, 1/35 Infantry was very comforting in his actions, both on the battlefield and to Russ's family. My son is planning on being a Marine, he is 17 years old and he rocked me to my core when he asked to go visit his Great-(and he was so very great) Uncle. What shocked me is he made this date 3 weeks in advance. A man never knows whom or how many he will influence in his life time.

3566. My grandfather served with the 35th Infantry regiment during WWII, his name was John Henry Grimes. To the best of my knowledge he served on Luzon and received a bronze star for an assault on a mortar station, this is what I read on some papers that I found. Anymore information that I could find out, or a direction I could be pointed in to find out more info would be greatly appreciated. My grandfather passed away in 1985.

3564. Today when I signed onto the web site I was totally amazed that my posting on YOU TUBE was on the front page. Veterans Day was one that I will never forget. It is very humbling to have this on the web site. I have flashed back to that event 40 years ago so many times, sorta like a broken record over and over. I am so thankful for all the CACTI individuals that I served with. I am also thankful for all of those individuals that assisted in helping me get my medal. Closure to this event is a little easier to think about, but will never leave me. Ole

3557. Attended San Diego's Veteran Day Parade today then followed it with a BBQ luncheon at Veterans Village, www.vvsd.net, where all had a terrific time. Thought of old friends, some long past and moments you don't write home to mom about. Darkness is now overtaking the West Coast and my mind continues to wander in the tidelands of long ago. Veterans Day 2009 is coming to a close, but my memories remain alive with sporatic energy that defies time. I hope your day has been filled with reflection and a hug or two from those you love.

3552. On this November 11th I will be attending the Veterans Day Ceremony at the Troy City Hall. And as I always do, I ask those in attendance to remember SP4 James Humphrey,SP4 Gary Rust, and PFC John Bratton who were killed on this day in 1968 while returning from a reconnaissance mission. Those of us that were privileged enough to know these fine young have nothing but fond memories of them. We still ache knowing what they missed by dying so young. We will never forget them or their sacrifice doing such a necessary and noble cause. I will also visit the grave site of David Head ( A Company ) the Cacti brother buried nearest to my home. He attended the High School my granddaughter now attends. She will see that he has not been forgotten as well. Take care my brothers and savor only the good times we shared with them.

3537. Did you know? The Department of Veterans Affairs established a service-connection for Vietnam veterans suffering from Parkinson's disease, ischemic heart disease (IHD) and B-cell leukemias such as hairy-cell leukemia. These illnesses are now considered "presumed" illnesses. This "presumption" simplifies and speeds up the application process for VA benefits. It is important to note that this new policy will not go into effect until sometime in 2010. At which point affected veterans will be urged to submit new disability claims. http://www.veteranprograms.com/id1070.html

3528. I was a Sgt fresh out of NCO academy via Ranger school, and served in C company year of 1969. I was wounded while recovering one of my men Jim Hyatt during a firefight and after helping to patch up on another solder that had had his lag taken off and his belly opened from a chi-com Rodney Winchell. Later after returning home to Calif, CBS aired a documentary, The Wounded from Vet Name. I later comedown with Malaria. But not all was bad, One day while the the company was moving one of us had a radio tuned to some Soul or Rock music, the company commander walking a safe ways back heard the music and ordered the radio off, just then us walking point where hit, the radio went flying in the air and volume went to full blast as we fought our way out. It was a sen right out of Apocalyptic Now. We think the company commander gave our position away, after the firefight ended and conformation that none was hit we move on, and yes we retrieved our radio and stopped play our music will on patrol. Other accounts include my platoon and I stopping to take a bath in a running stream only to be ambushed, we all serviced, Out on recon in Cambodia for four days and almost taken POW, we all got back OK, A night attack on the wrong village no shots fired while the people in the village look-on a puzzled as us and latter we had a laugh at the commanders orders, And More, All True and all before my 21 birthday.
