The one thing I have learned while dealing with our brothers and our personal memorys of the war and actions we were in is that not a one person remembers the events that took place, the exact same way as I do. I remember one fire fight we were in and a friend of mine was called across the peremiter while were under heavy fire, and was told to get a sniper out of a tree with his 60. He passed right by my fox hole and I told him to be careful, well he was successful and was not killed of injured. I met him on my first reunion and we talked about what he had done. His answer was "I don't remember that". It set me back because I have remembered that fire fight and what he did for the past 40 some years. Respectfully what I'm saying is that we all remember what went on over there from our own perspective, not that anyone is wrong or right. Hope maybe you could look at it with empathy for the person that wrote the account. Thanks for sharing Doc Rose.

GUY ALVIN BALLARD JR -- Iron Station NC USA -- 09/21/2011 Email 4083. Walter, your comments (Item 4081) regarding the Ivy Leaf narrative for the Tan Phong battle are appreciated. Not many of us were there, so the published account approved by the 4th ID in the Division newspaper 45-years-ago is what was available to us -- if that is the material you refer to. I encourage you to renew your membership and submit your account of what transpired that day. We all know that truth is the first casualty of war. It is equally true that individuals have recklessly distorted the "facts" of things that happened in Vietnam -- sometimes because perceptions differ about what transpired, but more often to further political, personal or career goals. If the narrative I've mentioned is the one you are addressing, to say it makes the Association appear "sloppy and unattentive to detail" is gratuitous. Share the facts as you know them with the rest of us, as you did with Capt. Walker's widow and children. Submit the article to the editor of the Association's "Cacti Times" and address the specific errors you are aware of in the Ivy Leaf's battle account.

Included is Donald Holke, KIA 11/9/67. Among the Guests of Honor at the reception 6-9 pm on Oct 7, 2011 will be Clare 'Bunny' West(formerly Holke) who directed me to your site. Gentlemen, I salute you for your great work in creating and maintaining such a fine website.
Christopher Gaynor -- Vashon WA USA -- 09/13/2011 Email 4081. The narrative you have displayed for the "the battle of tan phong" has many errors. That's a shame as it reflects on us as sloppy and unattentive to detail. I was Cpt. Walker's 1st platoon leader that day and he would have been pissed to know that the facts have been tossed willy nilly to the wind just so higher ups who were not on the ground that night could boast....this has real consequences as I was the officer who had to explain to his wife and two daughters what really happened to him 29may67, regards, WAT,1lt.INF.USAR

If you would rather not participate, I certainly understand. The point of the Group is to keep Association members united and in routine contact using the social media your children and grandchildren do . The Group is NOT to be used for political or commercial purposes.

Since this was my first I was telling someone at a table in the lobby that my name was Wayne Lund, A man behind me said "SGT LUND, I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR YOU FOR THE PAST 44 YEARS", What a shocker, It was Jim Brown, my medic from Recon 1/35. Seeing Jim and so many other comrades like Tony Caggiano, T.J.Blue, Ron Ray, Chuck Norris, Teddy Bear Carpenter, Bill Bitautas, Don Johnson, and many, many more, brought back memories and was wonderful talking to all the others that I meet there. As I told everyone, this was my first reunion but it will definitely not be my last. I am looking forward to the reunion in Colorado, can hardly wait. The Grandfather is William Bernard Woltkamp and he was a part of the 35th Infantry 1st Battalion PNA Platoon-Combat Engineers. On Sept 10th, 1950 all ( or many) of his platoon were taken prisoner. "He really didn't know it until their rifles were confiscated". "They were able to escape when one evening one of the soldiers over powered a guard who was sleeping and they got away. They made it back all the way to friendly territory (1st Calvary Lines)." Is there anyone out there from the Cacti in Korea who can corroborate the status as POW in this incident?. We strive in the Association to show our support to the families of these heroes by having our members attend the services and personally expressing the condolences of the membership for the loss of these brave young men. It appears that the funeral services for Spc Kevin J. Hilaman may be held in his hometown of Albany, CA in the next several days. Any members in the area of San Francisco / Oakland we are calling on you to help us show support for this young hero. It is still not clear to us just when or where in the Albany area the services will take place but it will likely be by mid week just after the 4th of July. If you think you may be able to help us please contact me and we will provide you with the best information we have as we get it. At this point we have volunteers for the services for PFC Nuncio in Virginia and SSGT Kelly in Menifee, CA but would appreciate any further volunteers who may be able to attend. We also anticipate a funeral for Lt. Del Castillo at West Point, NY very shortly and can use volunteers for that service also. Today is the 45th anniversary of that battle and I still grieve for my best friend Allan Joseph Altieri. We went through basic training, AIT and Schofield Barracks together. Only thirteen of the the original members of recon platoon, first of 35th that departed Schofield in December of 1965 made it back. I will be in this year reunion with pictures of the original recon platoon that departed Schofield December 1965. Carlos Lopez home-210-653-6387 cell-210-215-6754
Carlos Lopez -- San Antonio TX USA -- 06/24/2011 Email 4020. As you will see below in a posting by Bill Henson, the Cacti suffered yet another KIA in Afghanistan. PFC Levi E. Nuncio was killed on June 22nd in Afghanistan. He grew up in the Harrisonburg, VA area and we would anticipate that the funeral services are likely to be there. The Association always strives to have representation at these funerals to demonstrate our support for our Brother and his family. We have no idea of exactly when or where these services will be held at this time. Our experience tells us that the services are likely to be toward the end of next week. We would like to have a volunteer or two to represent the Association by attending the viewing and/or the funeral for our latest hero. We fully understand what difficult duty this may be but it is not nearly as difficult as the duty that Levi and our other young Cacti Brothers are performing for us all. If you live somewhat near the area and think that you might be able to do this for all of us please contact me at the e-mail below and I will provide you with the information of what you need to do in represnting us and will keep you informed of any new information as we get it. Thanks to anyone who can take on this sad duty. God Bless. --Doc Hall

Cacti Brothers, 45 years ago today, 1st Bn 35th Inf Recon lost 10 Troopers(out of about 25 in the plt)several wounded, and 2 Charlie Co.troopers were KIA, trying to reinforce us. A Co. was also trying to reach us and lost one man, (missing) maybe captured. It was an all day Battle into darkness, against overwelming odds. We fought to keep from being overrun. The NVA were held off by our small arms fire, Air Force Birds with; wall to wall nape and 1st 35th 4.2 motars and 3rd Bde "Big Guns". These Bravemen were called by our Country to fight. There is not a day that passes without me remembering them. God Bless our Fighters. May they ALL be safely returned home.

When young men go into battle they know not what dangers and treacheries await them in the course of their mission yet they go undaunted by fear, rather they display the utmost courage and they continue forward without fear or doubt. This is what heroes are made of and Sgt White has now joined a long list of former Cacti heroes who have gone before him. May he rest in peace and we will never forget him. May God bless his family and keep them safe. I would like to also remember all the men of Recon Platoon, HHC 1/35 Inf who gave their lives in battle in 1966 and 1967. Francisco Candia -- Tempe AZ USA -- 04/21/2011 Email 3958. As the 13th annual reunion is coming up, I thought I would write another poem for the 35th.Regiment, written on 9 February 2011. hope you all enjoy this one.
THE 35TH'S 13TH REUNION
We'll be meeting in San Antonio for the 13th reunion of the Regiment's present and past, The reunion's planned for late July, where we'll gather in the Alamo City and have a blast.
It's going to be a gathering of friends and 35th members from 46 years ago and to this date, As we meet again there will be reminiscing and the many war stories will be up for debate.
During our reunion we are asking the 35th's Iraq and Afghan Vets to come to our ball, Knowing that our present members and friends will gladly welcome them one and all.
As we've done for each reunion, we will pay tribute to our comrades whom we've laid to rest, We will remember them as our lost brothers-in-arms and state that they were the very best.
So once again we will say goodbye and proudly watch as our colors are retired for another year, Then we'll be planning our next reunion where once again we'll be traveling from far and near.
Wayne D. Lund -- San Antonio TX USA -- 04/21/2011 Email 3957. Dues are Due. If you are an annual member and have not already done so for 2011, it is time to renew your membership. Please do this now while you are thinking about it. We need your support in order to carry on the many projects that make this a great organization. Just go to the membership page of the website and print out a membership form and get it in the mail today. Without your support, we are nothing. Scholarship Fund: Over the past couple of years tax deductible contributions to this fund have been lagging. In these weak financial times the children and grandchildren of our Cacti Brothers need help more than ever. This fund depends entirely on your generosity. If you are renewing your Annual Membership please check off the box for Donation to the Scholarship Fund and give whatever you can. It is important to keep this fund solvent so that we can continue to provide this valuable program. Cacti Monument Fund: As most of you know we are attempting to construct a monument at the Infantry Museum grounds at Ft. Benning. We are nearing the halfway point for this fund and we can only reach our goal to build this memorial to Ourselves if you support us. If you are renewing your Annual Membership and can help us out, please check the box for the Cacti Monument and contribute (also tax deductible) what you can. For our Life Members, we certainly hope that we can count on you for support of these two important projects. Please take the time to write out a check in support of either or both and mail to Bill Henson: Secretary, 35th Infantry Regiment Association; 3680 Chrisfield Dr., Rocky River, OH 44116-3637.
Jim "Doc" Hall -- Woodbury NJ USA -- 04/20/2011 Email 3956. The Cacti is on the ground and operating out of FOB Joyce, which is just south of Asadabad, Afghanistan. The Battalion will be spread across four different Forward Operating Bases from southern Kunar Province and up north into the Pech River Valley.
(Google searches) Asadabad or Asad Abad is a city of Afghanistan, the capital of Kunar Province. It is located at the confluence of the Pech River and Kunar River. Asadabad is located 114 miles from the capital of Kabul, and has a remarkably dangerous terrain of plummeting, steep valleys and sharp mountain peaks that rise 14,000 feet into the sky. Nawa Pass that lies east of Asadabad is the next major border crossing point North of the Khyber Pass for the region. Very interesting read and I recommend it to all Cacti. I have read a few other Cacti books over the past few years and enjoy each of these and as Cacti I'm sure that you would to. Included are: "The Green Monster" by Leigh Thomas; "From Halos to Foxholes" by Ralph Leebert; "A Grunt Speaks" by Ray Gleason; and "Escape from North Korea.." by Paul Petredis. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more of these Cacti books out there and if there are I sure would want to know of them. Dan LaRoche -- East Wenatchee WA USA -- 03/23/2011 Email 3934. Call for Nominations:
It's that time of the year when we begin to look in earnest for individuals willing to take on the task of managing this organization for the benefit of our members. There is a Board of Directors comprised of a President, Vice Presidents, a Secretary, Treasurer, Sgt-at-Arms, and 3 past presidents. Along with several appointed positions, your Board works diligently to make this the absolute best association it can be.
As dictated by our constitution the term of office for each of our elected officers is two years. We last held elections in July of 2009; so, the term for our current board will expire this July at the reunion. To that end we, the Nominating Committee, have been asked to prepare a slate of candidates for your consideration.
We're looking for any member in good standing who wants to participate in administering to the needs of Cacti membership. If you want to make a mark on the organization; know you can do one of the jobs better than the incumbent; want to change the direction the association is headed in; or, want to have a voice in the management of this organization - put your name forward as a nominee this July.
The process is fairly simple, send an email to any of the Nominating Committee indicating you want to run. Let us know which of the offices you're interested in (See the Association tab on the web site for a listing and description of each job.) and send along your reasons for wanting to run. We'll contact you in return, and let you know what's next.
All we ask is you think it over, and let us know if you're interested.
Thanks,
2009/2011 Nominating Committee:

The first part of February we sent out reminder notices to our Annual Members. So far the response has been very good indeed with 225 renewing membership for 2011. And even better news! 45 of the memberships were from 35th Infantry Regiment vets who were not members in 2010.
But there are still a number of you out there who have not yet sent in your 2011 dues. Your $15 for an "electronic" Times membership or $25 for a "mailed" Times membership help support not only the publication of our tri-annual Cacti Times but also support our other programs. Through you, we remain a strong and active Infantry Association. Keep our success going by mailing your membership today. And do not forget to update your address or Email address. Just as there is an old buddy out there you are looking for, there is an old buddy looking for you. Please remember to send in your dues today.

Sonny Cortese -- PA USA -- 03/08/2011 3917. I've recently gotten in contact with the son of one of our KIA hero's. The son was only 6 months old when his father died and naturally wants to know what he can learn about his father. I didn't know his father personally so I researched for what I could learn of him through our web site and all it's resources and it is incredible what resources we have on our website. In searching for information I searched for who else from the same company was KIA with his father that day. One of the 4 men killed that day for C Co 2/35th was Roger Fulkerson. I stopped to read his story and the memorial left for him on his memorial page by his friend Michael Kurtgis. What an amazing story it was too and what an amazing piece of writing by Michael. I recommend that all go to Roger Fulkerson's memorial page and read this. Guys we have thousands of stories and historical bits on our web site. We all should be proud of what we have created and proud of all of those who took part in that creation. Roger's story is ultimately one of a child finding the father that she never knew. Michael Kurtgis' story is one of being able to serve and repay a debt to the memory of an old friend. Someone out there can do the same for their old friend Sammy Burrola through his son Sammy. If you knew Sammy and are willing to share some memories with the son who never knew him please contact me. You can really serve the memory of an old friend. For the rest of us, read Roger's story. You will come away with an understanding of what we all are really all about. Doc Hall

I agree that the training we received was subpar for the duty we performed. I also know that there is no way you can prepare someone for the reality of a firefight. All simulated types of training does some good, but let's face it only trial by fire makes you a combat medic. All brothers in arms, know that you did the the absolute best job you could under the circumstances. I have talked to a few modern day corpsmen and they receive a more realistic training than we did. So, why not look at it that maybe what we brought home was passed on and now days training is better because of us. Be well and welcome home brothers. "Doc Olea "C"-"D" 1/35 68-69

They should have told us we where going to Nam and trained us for that not working in a hospital or making beds.

Judy Carr/Willard -- Wichita KS USA -- 03/01/2011 Email 3906. Looking foward to the San Antonio reunion. This is where I trained at FT. Sam Houston in 1967 as a 91B10 Medic. I dont know how the other medics felt but I wish the army had given us more field training than hospital training in how to make bed corners or give bed baths !! It would have been great to know if we were going to VN and then spend our whole AIT learning more about saving our men in combat than careing for them in the hospital. Us field medics did the best we could with what training we had....Will be good to see everyone again at the reunion. God Bless...Gary Rose
Gary "Doc" Rose -- Asheville NC USA -- 03/01/2011 Email 3905. On 8 August 1984, a Police Officer was dispatched to the Columbus Cab Co in Fort Benning GA. On the floor lay 70-year-old Charles McGaha. He had been stabbed 46 times. In 1945, on an island in the Philippines, Master Sgt. Charles McGaha, G Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Regiment "Cacti" earned the right to wear the Medal of Honor. McGaha retired from the Army in 1961. He ran a gas station, an insurance agency and the cab company. Although their numbers have dwindled, we should not forget those who served and fought in WWII. With respect to all current and former "Cacti" Soldiers.

I think he'd be very proud of his grandsons.
There will come a day when I tell them about a grandpa they'll never know. There's no instruction manual on how to do that, or when. Our oldest is nearly 4 and the youngest is coming up on two. I was only 5 when my dad was killed - and while it's hard for me to be away for only a day or two, I can't imagine what my dad went thru.
I pray for his soul, for his guiding hand, that I will honor his life and that he'll never be forgotten.
God bless those of you who served, those who died and those who honor their memory.

Joe Henderson -- Levittown PA USA -- 11/25/2010 Email 3839. The following is my favorite story of Thanksgiving in Vietnam. It appeared in the 4th Inf Div guestbook on Nov 23, 2000. The writer was not a Cacti but the experience could well of been. Doc Hall.
After the Battle of Dak To and after receiving replacements and resupply, our unit was moved into a firebase near Kontum in the Central Highlands a few days before Thanksgiving. We were advised that a full-blown Thanksgiving dinner would be brought out to us. Early that morning, a lone chopper approached and landed on the LZ. Out of it came several generals accompanied by our battalion commander, "Saber". When this much "brass" is around, you know something is up. We were ordered to pack-up our gear, as we were going to be making a CA into a "hot" LZ and once we secured a perimeter we would receive our hot chow. We moved out, and they were right. Partially right, the LZ was hot alright, not with NVA, but the small fires created by artillery and airstrikes. While some extinguished the fires, the others started digging-in. Once our positions were finished and the perimeter was secure, again a lone chopper approached our LZ and unloaded two mermite cans. One with turkey, the other mashed potatoes. They forgot not only all the trimmings, but also, paper plates to serve it on. As a "grunt", we didn't carry mess kits. As I walked the chow line with my hands out, one hand was filled with turkey, the other mashed potatoes. Then it began to rain. And rain like, only, you can get in the highlands. I had to hurry to eat the mashed potatoes before it ran through my fingers. What a Thanksgiving!!! And you know, I was thankful to receive it. Every Thanksgiving while I sit with family, I think of this time and am grateful. Grateful to my Lord and Savior for the sacrifice he made for us and to remember my Brothers who can only be there in spirit. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving to you all. Jim \"Doc\" Hall -- Woodbury NJ USA -- 11/22/2010 Email 3835. It's with sadness that I report we lost a brother today. Leroy Cook "Beetle" Recon 2/35th 1969 & 70 passed this morning from heart failure. Please say a prayer for him and his loved one's.
Wiley Dodd (Tiny)-Sgt. at Arms -- Riverview MI USA -- 11/22/2010 Email 3834. Does anyone out there have a copy of the very first Cacti newsletter? Not sure if it came out right before the first reunion in Sept 1999 or right after it. It was a relatively small document. Joan Arnold would of been the editor then. We are doing a project right now to allow us to preserve copies of all Cacti Times/ Cacti Newsletters and are missing only this one. We would be happy to receive a copy of this and even a xerox copy or a scan would do nicely. Thanks, Doc Hall
Jim \"Doc\" Hall -- Woodbury NJ USA -- 11/21/2010 Email 3833. I was moved by 3 events this year, providing a first hand account regarding Lt. Gentinne being KIA'd at the Rock Quarry, attending the Ken Henniger Memorial Tribute, and of course the presentation at the Reunion in Pittsburgh that honor's our fallen heroes..... On November 21, 1969 at what remainded of the Oasis Fire Base, I remember and honor, Curtis Frantz, Robert Worthen and Charles Howze who were killed due to a faulty 4.2 Mortar Round. In addition, Donald Boyles KIA was related to this incident since he led a convoy from Camp Enari to the Oasis to potentially pick up the wounded. The convoy was ambused on its return trip to Camp Enari killing Warrant Officer Boyles. I remember this day quite well after so many years. I learned from all of you never to forget. I thank all of you.

The Cacti needs to salute 3 "D" 1/35 soldiers that lost their lives on veterans day 1968. Those brave brothers are: John "Preacher" Bratton, James Humphrey, & Gary Rust. May they rest in peace with the knowledge that they will never be forgotten. Thank You. "DOC"

I miss my older brother very much, he went through so much hell(which I can see all of Charlie company did).
