Bravo Company, 1st Battalion (Cacti Green) will hold their annual reunion dinner at 6:00 pm on Friday, September 28, 2012 at Hacienda Colorado - Lone Tree, only two miles from the Inverness Hotel and Conference Center. This is the seventh consecutive year that the company will have its own separate get together in conjunction with the annual Cacti Regimental Reunion. There will be no set program but plenty of time to visit with old friends in a casual, comfortable and private setting. Hacienda Colorado, a unique restaurant, has a style of cuisine unlike any other. In fact, they had to invent a new term for it - "Mountain Mex." They've taken traditional recipes and updated them with a distinct Rocky Mountain twist. When you come to Hacienda Colorado, feel free to dress up or dress down. In any case, you'll enjoy the unique food and drink, including 120 tequilas, served with a friendly sophistication. Again this year, the restaurant has agreed to let us order from the menu and pay individually. Take a look at the menu on their web site at: http://haciendacolorado.com. All Bravo Company, 1/35 veterans, family and friends who would like to attend should contact TJ Blue as soon as their plans are set. This can be done by email teej1010@gmail.com; phone 843-525-1098 or snail mail at 201 Pleasant Point Drive, Lady's Island, SC 29907. Larry Frias Jr -- El Paso TX USA -- 08/02/2012 Email 4367. Greetings all, I'm attempting to piece together an event/memory that took place possibly May 1966. A First Lieutenant McInnis (sp,) who may have been XO for Captain Tony Bisantz, was asked to investigate the ambush of an ARVN convoy. My only memory of the event is arriving at the ambush sight and realizing that a large number of civilians had been massacred. Should any members of the original A Company, commanded by Captains Bisantz or Flielding have any information related to this, I would greatly appreciate your comments. I don't believe we started from Brigade Hill near Pleiku. My vague memory is of a Battalion size operation that may have been based west or southwest of Pleiku

Paul Mullins -- USA -- 07/18/2012 Email 4361. G'day. I returned today from 2 weeks of travels to VietNam. I traveled from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City (Siagon) with selected stops along the way. It was not a military tour proper, but rather an organised tour of the country. I did however take a side trip on my own to Buon (Ban) Me Thout. The old airport is intact, but not in use. The new airport, which serves domestic flights is adjacent to the old one. The new airport is approximately 6 years old. The runway appears to sit where the 7/17th Air Cav parked helicopters. The site is over grown with greenery and brush. Where once I recalled neat rows of trees of a rubber plantation beyond the encampment perimeter is now vegetation. Houses are now seen within close proximity to the old plantation areas. The road leading to/from the airport is double lane paving with a parkway between lanes. I think I saw the possible site of Camp Correyelle which I believe was on the 2 lane paving leading to Highway One. Boun (Ban) Me Thout is a city of 400,000. I recall, Bravo Company convoyed to Pleiku at the end of December of 1969 on Highway One. I recall a Catholic mission/school where the sound of a single gunshot was heard as we traveled on deuce and one-halfs. I could not identify the mission/school during my search. I had time allocated to travel to Pleiku and An Khe but decided that finding remnants of military locations might not be so easy on my own. I departed Buon Me Thout early evening from the airport. It was raining and dank; it reminded me of the encampment where we served, preparing for night duty. I could still sense our military being. I found my travels insightful, meaningful and worthwhile. Time will not dimmish the memory of our fallen mates and their sacrifices. John Linn B 2/35

Today would have been my brother Spec 4 William "Doc" Douglas Wyants 65 birthday, but on Feb 9 1968 his life his dreams of being a doctor and having a family in a matter of moments that was taken away. I still grieve as that 15 year old girl for her brother. I miss hearing his voice. Spending time with him time hasn't taken that ache and loss away. His choice of weapon was wanting to heal and help others. That's the way he was and I am proud of my brother. He gave the ultimate gift himself. His one fear that he would be forgotten as if he never was so please. Those who served with him knew him please say a prayer for him. As for Me I will continue to grieve. For my big brother. John Lorts, Editor, and the other Officers of the Board of Directors activily solicit information, pictures, articles, etc from all of our members, be they WW II, Korea, RVN or iraq/Afghan. Many of us are active with WW II Vets and their programs. I am currently serving as Const Supt for the Town of Avon (IN), which is building a WW II Memorial that will feature a bronze statue in the likeness of BG, Chet Wright, who is a Hendricks Cnty resident, and Veteran of WW II & Korea. In Sept I will serve as a "Guardian" to a WW II Vet on an "Honor Flight," from Indianapolis to Wash, DC. The purpose of these flights is to provide a free trip to any and all WW II Vets who care to attend a one-day visit to the new WW II Memorial, there. We look to Vets like you, Bill to submit the stories of your experiences of that late horrific conflict, which may spur some other Vet who reads it, to tell his story. Feel free to submit your first to either me, or any other member of the Board of Directors.

Peter Birrow -- Gulfport FL USA -- 07/02/2012 Email -- http://Happy Fourth of July 4351. Leave No Man Behind: Former 1/35th Cacti member, Bill Bell (1965-66), spent four years compiling an eyewitness account of the Vietnam War from its earlier stages through the last day of the Republic, 30 April 1975. With both military and civil service from 1960 to 1993 with the 25th ID, 101st ABN, 6th SF Group, and numerous joint-service and intelligence units, Bell's account is a startling new look at the postwar era and the issue of America's almost 1700 unreturned veterans listed as POW/MIA, an issue that has haunted America since the beginning of American involvement. Shrouded in controversy, a subject of great emotion amid charges of governmental conspiracy and Communist deceit, the possibility of American servicemen being held in secret captivity after the war's end has influenced U.S. policy toward Southeast Asia for several decades. Now, the former Chief of the U.S. Government's first official office in postwar Vietnam provides an insider's account of that effort. The challenges he faced in dealing with U.S. politicians, including Vietnam veterans, Senators John McCain and John Kerry, are an ardent reminder of the many similarities in the bloody wars fought by American troops in both Vietnam and Iraq-Afghanistan. In an illuminating and deeply personal memoir, the government's top missing persons investigator in Southeast Asia, who later became a member of the U.S. Congressional Staff, discusses the history of the search for missing Americans, reveals how the Communist Vietnamese stonewalled U.S. efforts to discover the truth, and how the standards for MIA case investigations were gradually lowered while pressure for expanded commercial and economic ties with communist Vietnam increased. Leave No Man Behind is the compelling story of a dedicated group of professionals who, against great odds, were able to uphold the proud military traditions of duty, honor and country. Veterans who were fortunate enough to come home can honor the sacrifice made by our unreturned brothers-in-arms by taking the time to read this revealing account of their fate. This includes the combat action involving soldiers of the Cacti, including PFC William Ellis Jr. (A 1/35th), who was last seen alive on 24 June 1966. PFC Ellis has never been accounted for.

Jim "Doc" Hall -- Woodbury NJ USA -- 06/28/2012 Email 4347. I was a college freshman when my friend Mike Slyck went to Vietnam. We wrote off and on. I was frightened for him and everyone else "in country." I could only imagine what he was experiencing, as he wrote little about the war. Was he protecting me? I never knew. I am thankful for your website for I happened upon it one day, much to my surprise. For years I believed that my friend died in VN: thankfully, I was wrong. Sonny Cortese -- Glenolden PA USA -- 06/21/2012 4343. Hi Guys..Hope you are all well. I was in 1st platoon A CO 1st 35th from June 68 till November 68 when Tex gave me a job driving a Major around which I didn't like much so I got a hold of Beal our old Company Comander, now with support, and he got me a job driving a truck. Worked the chopper pad at the Oasis, by the way I don't remember any palm trees around there. I happened to be ther on Mothers Day 69 when Charlie decided to commit suicide and attact. What a mess, Thanks to a tank unit they could not make it across the air strip. Miss you guys...Vic

He spoke of his Sgt a lot (Flores, Frietez or Fuetes?) and his Capt Towers. Any memories would be appreciated. He passed away almost 2 years ago, and didn't record his stories. My children never even heard his stories because he never really spoke about his time in Vietnam until later in his life. Any help would be appreciated. Kathy Morey -- Kasilof AR USA -- 06/06/2012 Email 4332. My name is Kate (Savell) Jones. I am seeking more information about my great uncle, SP4 Floyd Gwen Savell's service. He was an M60 ammo bearer to David Braswell of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment. He was KIA February 14, 1967 in Binh Dinh Province. My great grandmother was given "mixed" information of his passing (the fact that she had a devastating stoke not too long before he was sent over there could have mixed the information even worse). My great aunt and my mom was closest to him. They wrote back and forth, he carried around a picture of my great aunt and mom, and when they sent his belonging back some of the letters and both pictures were still on him. I have been trying to find more information about Floyd "Gwen" Savell for quite some time now. Primarily for my great aunt (who is poor health) so she may know more before she passes. Also, for his son, Stacey James, who does not know of anything about his dad (was 4 when Gwen was sent to war and killed). And for my mom, who still has his box of belongings. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if there is anyone that knew him and would be willing to share their story, I'd greatly appreciate it. They are more than welcome to email me or write me. My husband is active duty Air Force (10 yrs so far, but will be a lifer) and we are stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (Ft. Lewis and McChord AFB) in Washington. Any information and/or history of my uncle would be awesome! Thank you for serving, and for gathering information for those who have "loose ends" when it comes to family KIA or who served. What you guys did, and do, is amazing and I will be forever thankful.

Doc Wyant but didn't know how I was so proud to hear how well my brother was. I thought of by those in his regiment. He was only 20 but he tried to do the best he could in everything he did. As a brother I adored and looked up to him handheld was always always there for me. When he was in training he would tell us funny stories about having to give each other a bath PR the medical terms. Doug was so fascinated by this and said he wanted to continue his medical education. When he came home to be a doctor. He wanted to help others. He was always afraid he would be forgotten. I never have never will The love and the loss of my brother feels as strong and the grief as deep as when I was 15 July 12 will be his birthday. In my heart I can share it with him but oh what wishes I would give to have him sitting beside me alive and had shared our lives. Our children growing up together. The memories that were never made. But only in my dreams can I do this but if only dreams could come true. So many if onlys for me and so many of you. Thank you all at the 35 for being there by this side Your last memories are all I have now. Maybe one day when you are ready you can share them and any photos. That will mean so much to me. God be with all of you. MARY

I went home to be married and Joel went to RVN. I got there too in early 68 not knowing he already lost his life. I wanted him to meet my wife, too. Jesse Campos -- Anacoco LA USA -- 05/27/2012 Email 4313. n Memory of George Edden.
Our fallen hero who died April 5, 1968 down from the top of Mile High. A company had been ambushed by the North Vietnamese and George volunteered to go down and help them out - he never returned. The rest of Delta Co was called to go and help - but it was over by the time we made it down the steep mountain side. Medics had already done as much as they could and it was now our duty to carry the wounded back up the mountain to a make shift LZ for transport to the hospital.
Slim (Emory Stapleton) and I found George and quickly made a sling out of small trees and a poncho to carry him up to the LZ. George was only 19 at the time and was all muscle and was probably close to lbs. George's head was at the top end of the sling so Slim and I had to switch ends often because the lower side was heaver plus we had our own full backpack and rifle. It was a tough climb but we really didn't think about it - all we wanted was to get him on a chopper. I was on the down hill side looking at George's face - we were probably within 100 yards of the LZ when he took his last breath - That moment in time and image will always be with me. Should be at church but knew I would be a mess, stayed home and wrote this in Memory of a Great Young American who gave his all - not just for his country but for volunteering to go help others out - a Man's Man!
George you will always be missed - quick wit and genuine smile - but most of all 'A Friend'

Robin (Schuldt) Field -- New Port Richey FL USA -- 05/18/2012 Email 4301. Just found this incredible poem online. Lots to think about for all of us. The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak The young dead soldiers do not speak.Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses:who has not heard them? They have a silence that speaks for them at nightand when the clock counts. They say: We were young. We have died.Remember us. They say: We have done what we couldbut until it is finished it is not done. They say: We have given our lives but until it is finishedno one can know what our lives gave. They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours, they will mean what you make them. They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were forpeace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say,it is you who must say this. We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning. We were young, they say. We have died; remember us. ~ written by Archibald MacLeish
Betsy Savery -- Lincoln CA USA -- 05/16/2012 Email 4300. A few weeks back the Denver Broncos released their 2012 schedule with them playing the Oakland Raiders at home on Sept. 30. At that point the Inverness Hotel froze our block at 160 rooms for 9/29 due to their contract with the NFL. We normally would be somewhere around 200 rooms for that night (Saturday). I have signed another contract with the Homewood Suites, which is .2 miles down the street from the Inverness for the same rate. They do have a shuttle also, so transportation back in forth should be no problem. Since this only impacts the room availability on 9/29 we could have only blocked 40 rooms just for that night, but because I felt that people may not want to move "down the street" for just one night I set up the contract so if someone would rather spend their entire stay there it would be possible. You will see the link to the hotel and explanation on the webpage. I would get my reserveations to the Inverness as soon as possible. There shouldn't be a panic at this time as our pick up at the hotel is for Sat night is only at 80 right now.

Steve Rainbolt, Secretary -- Avon IN USA -- 04/29/2012 Email 4291. Yesterday I had the privilege of seeing Schofield Barracks for the first. I was escorted by Lt. Rasmussen, who picked me up at our hotel, and took me on a tour of the base. Iwas introduced to the Gun Dogs, aka D co, 2/35th. My main goal in seeing the base was two fold: first to see our home base that we never saw while serving in Viet Nam and second was to Welcome our Brothers from there just completed tour in Afghanistan. Too my surprise I ended up being the one thanked for what we had done with our time in Viet Nam. The outreach extended to me from everyone at the 2/35 was awesome. A special thank you too one and all of the Gun Dogs and of e men and women of the Cacti Blue. My wife will be attending the welcome formal for the 2/35th tomorrow evening John Morgan HHC/D 2/357/67-9/68
John Morgan -- Weimar CA USA -- 04/27/2012 Email 4290. My father Alfred Garcia was stationed at Schofield Barracks. I'm not sure exactly when but I have a year book of sorts that I have found him in it. I also have a few photo albums of pictures of him and friends on the base. He was in Company F and the yearbook is dated 1955-1956. I am making the trip to Schofield from May 4 to the 8th and I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to get on the base and locate some of the places these pictures were taken. I want to also go to the museum and see if I can find any information on his time there. Also, does anyone have any sugestions on other things I should do while there. Thank you Tony
Anthony Garcia -- Folsom CA USA -- 04/25/2012 Email 4289. I just finished reading Curtis Gay's book, On More Sunrise. He put a entry in War Stories, I read it, I ordered the book. It was a great read, I really enjoyed it.He hit on so many thinks that where so common I'm sure to all of us. There where sad parts, parts that made me smile as I remembered them so well and parts that made me laugh. Best of all was the friendships I made then and still have to this day.
Rocco Doc DeRosa -- Fountain Hills AZ USA -- 04/24/2012 Email 4288. This month 45 years ago I came home from Vietnam. The 2nd happiest day in my life. The birth of my daughter was first and just turned 39. My heart was soaring but thinking of all who were still there. Back in the States got a ticket to go home to Portland, OR. Arrived in Portland then a taxi cab ride 25 miles to home to surprise my parents. It was about 2:00 am. My Dad answered the door. Will never forget the look on his face and my Moms. As you know the feelings of Vietnam are always with you. To all the people affected by Vietnam directly or in-directly. I love you all and to all who did not come home.

Steve Rainbolt, Secretary -- Avon IN USA -- 04/15/2012 Email 4282. Regarding Post #4273: I was blessed to be among those A-2-35 veterans enjoying some warmth in North Myrtle Beach, SC the end of March. Ian Mccormick is an astute young Cacti veteran--- from 50 feet he identified Roger Stevens' Purple Heart cap, offering his enthusiastic appreciation. Approaching closer, Ian inquired what unique battalion crest was that on Roger's shirt? CACTI...35th Infantryroared back Roger! Ian laughed, put out his hand to us, beaming broadly, and abruptly hollered "TAKE ARMS!" So here are two generations of Cacti combat veterans celebrating "life back in the world!" Ian last served in the 2/35 Delta "Gundogs" as a M-35 gunner; my guess is he brought a lot of smoke on behalf of the war on terror!Welcome home Ian, from your Cacti brothers!!!! Thank you, to all who got me to North Myrtle Beach; and all my new and renewed friends. from Rick Strawn 68-69 with Roger Stevens 69-70 A/2/35
Rick Strawn -- Salem OR USA -- 04/15/2012 Email 4281. Hi,I am writing a book on Vella Lavella in 1943. Initially, being a New Zealander, I was focussed on the New Zealand angle but I soon began to appreciate that there is an American backstory. Are there any vets from that period I can contact or advice you can give me regarding the 35ths role on Vella Lavella? There is an iconic photo of an American soldier on Vella with a steel helmet clutching what could be a Garrand. Does anyone know who he is & the story behind the photo? Thanks

John Morgan -- Weimar CA USA -- 03/16/2012 Email 4259. Brothers Cacti, we have suffered another loss. Please be ready to assist here if we need you.
I regretfully must tell you that we recently lost one of our very own Cacti Soldiers and Leaders last night, here in Afghanistan. 2LT Clovis Ray died of wounds suffered while conducting a combined patrol in the Pech River Valley when his element was attacked by the enemy using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
On the evening of 15 March 2012, 3rd Platoon, Delta Company "Gundogs,"
was conducting a combat patrol in the Pech River Valley in Central Kunar Province. While conducting a dismounted clearance of an area, an explosion occurred which resulted in the serious wounding of 2LT Clovis Ray. Unfortunately, he later died of his wounds.
2LT Clovis Ray is true hero, and was a phenomenal young rifle platoon leader. There are none better. He is survived by his wife, son, and his parents.
Please join me in keeping the Ray family in our prayers and give them strength in this trying time.
Please keep the Family and friends of our fallen comrade in your prayers.
Take Arms!

Commander, Task Force Cacti

We were pinned down and was able by morning to join with a small ban of men that had put down invasion after invasion of NVA Brave Men who gave their all. They lost 14 of the greatest soldiers in the world that day. Little did I know only nine days later our company Charlie Co would hit a large battalion size NVA force. Stone passed away. On March 15, 2012 at 3PM funeral and burial services will be held for MG Stone at Arlington Cemetery. Many of you from the 1968 era may well remember Gen Stone. He was a character and said to be a bit of a maverick but was also known as a "soldier's general" by those who served under him. It is only right that the Cacti recognize and honor General Stone at this time. So wheather you were there in 1968 or not please join MG Bill Moore (RET) and I in attending these services to honor MG Stone. jim "Doc" Hall -- Woodbury NJ USA -- 03/12/2012 Email 4250. I was Gary S. Edwards girl before he left for Vietnam - we talked about marriage when he got back home, but he died about a month before his tour was up. The one thing Gary said to me and his family was how much he missed us and snow - the day Gary's body arrived it was very warm and humid, thunderstorms, rare for that time of the year. The next day Chicago got one of the worst snow storms ever - 23" of snow, the date was January 26th, 1967. Because the roads were so bad and it was difficult to get to the funeral home, basically it was just his family and my family that came the first day. I am married, over 40 yrs. and have two beautiful grandson's, but Gary is always in my heart, even after 45 yrs. RIP Gary, you are gone, but certainly not forgotten.
Cindy -- St. John IN USA -- 03/09/2012 Email 4249. I left B 1/35th to work on General Stone's personal staff. Part of my duties was his driver. One time, while driving the jeep, the vehicle stalled. Gen. Stone, his aid and CSM Taylor jumped out of the jeep and started pushing to "jump start." I may be the only Sp4 to have a Major General push his jeep. He was a good man who cared for his troops. He was infantry and never forgot it.

On this date, March 6, 1967 the 1st Battalion, Company B lost three very good men: PSG Bill Poole, 1st Platoon; SGT Steve Peck, FO NCO; and PFC Lynn (Mike) Ferguson, Mortar Platoon medic. The day started for the 1st Battalion with routine village sweeps but by mid-day had become what would later be know as the Battle of Hoa Tan (1) also involving units from the 1st Cav. and ending with the tactical use of B-52 bombers In addition to the KIA's there were also many wounded including the Company Commander, Ed Nealon. The liberties and freedoms we enjoy today were hard fought, and you fought the battle well. My father in law, Harold Stephan, talked a lot about his service time, and having served with the 35th on Guadalcanal Island, Luzon, and training in New Zealand for what would have been an amphibious invasion of the Japanese Homeland. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1985, but he left me many of his war time treasures.

Per official documents we have John in A,2/235th. We recently discovered two other sources that indicate John was in D,2/35th. We are thinking John may have originally been A,2/35th and was transferred to D,2/35th when that new Company was formed. Can anyone speak to this? Thanks.

Samuel H. Picture -- South Pasadena CA USA -- 02/08/2012 Email 4218. From Don Dignan, D/2/16, 1st Inf Div 1967-68:
I received an e-mail from a lady whose brother apparently served with A/1/35 in 1966 by the name of Kenneth R. Harpold. In an article from the 25th Division newsletter from June 1966, the following article appeared:
After several weeks of light contact, elements of 3rd Brigade suddenly found themselves in a pitched battle with a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) regiment last week southwest of Pleiku.
During the action, the 2nd Platoon of Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry was trying to push back an NVA attack on the east edge of a landing zone.
As the men swept the area, they were picked at by snipers hidden throughout the heavily wooded area surrounding the landing zone.
"We didn't know where the snipers were," said Specialist Four Kenneth R. Harpold of Indianapolis, Ind., a fire team leader in the 2nd Platoon.
"There was one sniper that particularly bothered us." Harpold continued. "We began looking for him."
"PFC James Hyatt, who was right behind me, had a Chinese submachine gun he had captured and I had a 12-gauge shotgun. We both opened fire on the sniper."
"But he didn't fall like we expected him to do. It turned out that he was tied to the tree. We left him up there, planning to come back later and cut him down. When we did come back to get him he was gone. Apparently, some of the other NVA soldiers had come and taken him away," Harpold remarked of the enemy's passion for conducting combat police calls."
According to the sister, Ken was killed in an auto accident in 1969. She wanted talk to anyone who remembered him. If anyone does recall him, send me an e-mail and I'll give you a phone number and name. dondignan@sbcglobal.net

My friend James "Jimmy" Alexander Pemberton of Alpha Company, !st Battalion was killed on 5 April 1968 with four other troopers. I had been told he was a machine gunner, but from your website I've learned he was a life saver and a true hero. In my time in Nam I twice travelled Highway 14, through Kontum headed for Tan Canh, where I helped maintain a TACAN site. Today, I wonder if Jimmy died while treating his brothers or if they died because he had been taken from them. I miss him not being here.

We were mortered about 3 am and I was wounded in the leg. They took us to a old French hospital and laid us out on the ground, taking the worst cases first. Westmoreland was there and asked me how I was and I said not bad Sir. Later found out 9 were killed and about 40 wounded. There was a story somebody was leaving that day but was delayed by his sergent to get a haircut. He was killed that night. Some just arrived and were killed.

Steve Rainbolt, Sec'y -- Plainfield IN USA -- 01/12/2012 Email 4194. To the families and friends of the Cacti, I want to take an opportunity to provide an update on current operations. Cacti Soldiers and our Afghan Army and Police partners keep operating in the South Kunar and Pech River Valleys with great success. The impact has been tremendous and will continue to have long lasting effects to the people of Afghanistan. The mission remains the same to assist the Afghan people in their development of Governance, Security, and economic Stability so that they may provide the basic needs to their families. As you may have heard due the success of our Soldiers, The President of the United States ordered U.S. Forces to draw down 10,000 troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2011. Overall this does not have a major impact to our redeployment timeline. Majority of TF Cacti will return home during the month of March (mid-March thru end of month March for the bulk of the battalion). However, due to the directed drawdown, we will begin redeploying some small numbers of Soldiers during the next month. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my Rear-Detachment Cdr, CPT (P) Chris Bluhm at christopher.bluhm@us.army.mil. As part of the normal redeployment process TF Cacti will redeploy some select critical Soldiers with specific skills in the near future to prepare to receive the Battalion. As with previous deployments the Battalion will redeploy over time in several small groups and this process is scheduled to occur within the 2 weeks. We remain proud of every Cacti Soldier due to how critical and valuable they are to mission success whether in Hawaii and Afghanistan. They are true Warriors for serving our Great Nation in Global War on Terrorism. Cacti Soldiers are continuing to do a great job, working extremely hard in very harsh conditions. While there is still a lot of work to be done to complete our mission, we look forward to reuniting with our Family and Friends and spending well deserved quality time at home with our loved ones. Take Arms! Cacti!

Ammunition & Pioneer Platoon - the A & P Platoon provided a pool of men who could undertake all manner of manual tasks, including hauling ammunition to forward positions, sometimes under enemy fire. It was commanded by a 2nd Lieutenant with a Sergeant and driver for the Platoon truck, which mounted a .50 cal heavy machine gun. Each of its three eight man squads was led by a Corporal, promoted to Sergeant in 1944. The four NCOs carried rifles, all others carbines, and the Platoon carried two Bazookas for antitank defense.

Janice Jenkins -- Dedham MA USA -- 12/30/2011 Email 4181. Cacti Families and Friends: Happy Holidays from Kunar Province, Afghanistan! Winter has arrived here in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan as the peaks are begging to be covered in snow and the temperatures have dropped in to the 30s and 40s. Oddly enough, the winter season has been dry while the men and women of Task Force Cacti continue to make steady progress toward eliminating groups of violent and desperate enemy forces working to undermine the Afghan government and its people. Over the past 9 months, Task Force Cacti has executed several, Battalion-level operations, and numerous platoon and company level operations in very dynamic and complex environments in the Pech River Valley and the Southern Kunar River Valley. These operations have focused on partnering with the Afghan Army and Afghan Police Forces. As well, platoons and companies are equally focused on working with government officials and village elders on a daily basis, as they strive to make a better country for the young children and families of Afghanistan. We are all very proud of our young Soldiers and Leaders who are dedicated and committed on the mission that we are charged with. As you all know our efforts and successes come with a great cost. I'd like to take a few moments to remember those among our ranks that have paid the ultimate sacrifice throughout the deployment. We have lost 10 Soldiers from our Task Force - SGT Kevin White, Delta Co, 2-35 IN BN; SPC Brian Riley, HHC, 2-35 IN BN; SPC Levi Nuncio, Charlie Co, 2-35 IN BN; 1LT Dimitri Del Castillo, Bravo Co, 2-35 IN BN; SPC Kevin Hilaman, Delta Co, 2-35 IN BN; SSG Nigel Kelly (attached from 3 BSTB); SGT William Gross-Paniagua, (attached from 3 BSTB), SSG Houston Taylor, D Co, 2-27 IN BN (attached to our HHC Company); SGT Christopher Muniz, (attached from 3 BSTB); and SPC Ronald Wildrick Jr., Alpha Co, 2-35 IN BN. They were amazing Soldiers, sons, husbands, and fathers. They were true Heroes and their sacrifices will never be forgotten. They will always be honored and remembered within our Cacti ranks. Please continue to hold their families in your prayers. As 2011 comes to a close, the Soldiers of TF CACTI would like wish everyone a Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. Additionally, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our Families, friends, and especially to the 35th Infantry "Cacti" Association for their continued efforts and support. Whether you send care packages, or provide us with simple words of encouragement, it really means a great deal to the leaders and Soldiers of the CACTI Battalion. We hope to see many of you on the high ground when our unit returns to Schofield Barracks this April. We are planning a Traditional CACTI Ball (with soldiers wearing their dress uniforms and newly earned medals from our successful deployment here in Afghanistan) at the end of April. I invite any and all who can attend to come join us. We are planning to have this evening of camaraderie and remembrance on Saturday, 28 April 2012. Take Arms!LTC Colin Tuley

Steve Rainbolt, Assc Sec'y -- Plainfield IN USA -- 12/22/2011 Email 4171. (John Fielding requested that this be posted. John's email is: mjfielding@aol.com) The Memorial Mass of Resurrection for Tony Bisantz took place at Our Lady of the Seas Church in Buxton, North Carolina, the parish church for the Bisantz family since their retirement and just down the street from their home of many years in Rodanthe. It is a beautiful church tight to the shoreline of the Outer Banks overlooking the Pamlico Sound, a most fitting location given Tony's love of the sea. Tony became a close friend of Pastor Robert Brown, who incidentally was my college classmate and fellow ROTC graduate of the class of 1961 at Niagara University, New York, not far from Tony's hometown of Buffalo. Tony graduated and received his ROTC commission from Canisus College in Buffalo during the same timeframe. There was an overflow crowd at the memorial service indicative of Tony and Charlotte's active outreach within the community at-large.Tony was as gregarious in the Outer Banks as he was anywhere else in his Army career and it showed. Approaching the church one could not but help noting the arch of hook and ladder apparatus from the Chicamaccomico Banks Fire and Rescue Squad of which Tony was a very active member. The church service itself had wonderful music and under Pastor Brown's guidance family members took an active role and gave me the honor of delivering the eulogy which primarily centered on Tony's military service and highlighting his service with The Cacti. The service ended with a blessing and bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace which was held at the outside entrance in front of the church in deference to the space limitations within the church. The solemnity of the occasion turned into a true celebration of Tony's life as the gathering relocated to the church hall for a wide selection of food and beverages. I have rarely seen a group of people, most of whom had not met beforehand, spend so much time appreciating one another's presence. Cacti in attendance were Pat and Janet Lenz from Illinois, John and Marilyn Fielding from Florida and Jack and Annette Baldwin from Texas who soon became flooded with questions about Tony, the soldier, from a large number of Veterans present to the point that it seemed like we stumbled into a Cacti Reunion by mistake. Particularly poignant was seeing Tony's local Island Doctor spending a lot of time conversing in great detail with "Doc" Baldwin. In accordance with his wishes,Tony will be interred on March 5, 2012. in Arlington National Cemetery. A group of Cacti Veterans are planning to attend. Ellen Bisantz, Tony's daughter, is in contact with many individually and is also keeping in contact with the 35th Infantry Regiment Association providing information updates as appropriate including nearby lodging options. Dick Arnold -- USA -- 12/19/2011 Email 4169. Cacti brothers, you might recognize the name Lt. Angel Rosario. Lt. Rosario is an active duty Cacti, serving with the battalion in Kunar Prov. Afganistan. This sharp young officer attended the Pittsburgh 2010 Cacti reunion. I first met Lt. Rosario by correspondence. Current 2/35th CO LTC Colin Tuley had agreed to my request for five Cacti battalion challenge coins; directing me to his then adjutant, Lt Rosario. (Again, Great thanks to our own John Lorts.) The coins were to be distributed to the family and a few close friends of SGT Ken Henninger (KIA, A co 2/35, March 69), with gratitude from the Cacti Assoc. In mid July 2010 in Bay Village, Ohio ( near Clevelend); nearly 20 Cacti veterans attended this large, touching and emotional memorial. Two weeks later, at the Pittsburgh Cacti reunion, the engaging young Lt. Rosario made his mark with the old-guy Cacti and everyone else. The last time I saw Lt. Rosario, he was boarding a casino bound taxi with four young ladies sometime after midnight.Fast forward to this afternoon; there he was on camera giving a situation report during a battle, real-time, to a videographer; take a look, the link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGZWl0eHINU Oh yes,... David Manrique -- Fremont CA USA -- 12/15/2011 Email 4164. Sad news for the Cacti. We suffered two KIA's in the explosion of an IED on Sunday Dec 10th. KIA were Spc Ronald Wildrick (A Co.)from Blairsville, NJ and Sgt Chistopher Muniz (B Co.)of New Cuyama, CA. We would anticipate services for both men probably mid to late next week but do not have any information on services at this time. We probably will have volunteer attendees set for the Services for Ronald Wildrick but will need volunteers for Christopher Muniz. New Cuyama, CA is located in Santa Barbara County (North of Los Angeles) and about midway between Santa Maria and Bakersfield. If you live in this area and can help us to honor this young hero by attending his services to represent us, please contact me at the e-mail below and I will be glad to instruct you on what this involves. Believe me, it is not complicated and you will be helping us to honor Sgt Muniz and his family. We certainly owe them our support. Funerals are not necessarily easy duty but just our attendance will show the family and all active Cacti we care. Thanks, Doc Hall

Tiger tried to drag one of our guys away but dropped him when the guy screamed. Tiger came back and was shot MANY times along with a couple of our LP's. The LP's and the tiger victim were taken out the next morning. Many pictures of the dead tiger were taken but I didn't have a camera and never was able to get a picture from anyone. Captain "snuffy" Smith was our CO. He left just a couple of weeks later.Appreciate the e-mails I got from my previous posting, but I guess none of the guys from Charlie visit this site.

Hopefully your copy will arrive soon.

A lot of us were not kept up with,I even had all my personal effects stolen but did recieve my Bible back somehow. -- USA -- 11/15/2011 4133. I've come to this guestbook in a "round-about" way. My father, Jackie, "Jack", Lee Marler passed away 10MAY2011. Today, (14NOV2011), he and my mother would have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. (She survives.) Going through photos and paperwork from Dad's time in service, I ran across several black and white photographs that included one of Dad's buddies, Everett Light. Spent many hours today in researching Everett and chanced upon this site. He and Dad served together while stationed at Lee Barracks, Mainz-Gonssenheim, Germany. I believe both were with "C" Company, 1st ABG, 504th INF, 82nd ABN DIV. The photos show Everett in candid photos and all with a smile and vigor that only youth can exude. It is my estimation these images date from DEC 1958 to NOV 1960. Should anyone be interested in copies, it would be an honor to scan and email them. In memory of Dad, Sgt Jack L. His name was Kenneth Randall Eisenhour, know to the men that HE LED, as Lt. Ike. Ike was KIA on Nov. 13, 1967, Leading his Platoon (1st Plt., B Co., 1/35, 4th ID) on a combat assault. He was LOVED by all the men in his Platoon. He Led His Men by EXAMPLE and showing Deep Concern for all of them. He was just like Brother (that I never had) to me, and I Loved Him like that Brother. For the past 44 years, I have thought about and missed Ike Dearly. When it's my time to go, I sure hope I go to Heaven, because I KNOW Ike is there. God Bless you Ike, and I LOVE YOU.

My father passed away a few years ago, but I know he's sitting here watching it with me. The smell of cigarette smoke is all around. That's the smell I smell when I "feel" him all around. I am still curious if anyone knew him. I had posted on the guestbook a few months ago with all his information, but his name was Francis B. Higgins III. Please let me know if anyone knew of him. He was from Reading, PA.

I want the family to know, that I have raised my 5 children to know what a brave man Keith Bennett was, and how he saved many lives that day on Sniper Ridge... including my father. Today I had the opportunity to attend the Dedication Ceremony of only the second bridge in the nation to be named a "Medal of Honor" bridge. (Both are in Indiana.) In attendence were 8 surviving MOH Recipients from WWII, Korea & RVN. The biggest thrill for me was when I was able to ask Kenneth E. Stumpf if "he was a Cacti?" He was and is, and was awarded the MOH for actions near Duc Pho in April, 1967, while with C 1/35. He sent greetings to all Cacti, and especially Dick Arnold.
Steve Rainbolt -- Plainfield IN USA -- 10/19/2011 Email 4104. Dear Cacti Brothers,I just wanted to let you know that I had a chance to visit Schofield Barracks on Oct. 12th. I took a few photos which I will post with Doc and Pete of Bravo Company. It sure felt good to finally visit our home base but it would have been nice if our batallion was not in Afganistan. Milly and I toured the area and stopped in the BX and did a little trinket shopping. We had a fine lunch on the North Beach of Oahu and watched a Hawaiian sunset from Turtle Beach. I look forward to seeing you all in Denver.
