Bravo Company, 1st Battalion (Cacti Green), 35th Infantry Regiment will hold their annual reunion dinner at 5:30 pm on Friday, September 26, 2014 at the Captain's Steak and Fish House, only one mile from the Northbrook Hilton Hotel, our home base in Northbrook. This is the ninth consecutive year that the company will have its own separate get together in conjunction with the annual Cacti Regimental Reunion. There will be no set program but plenty of time to visit with old friends in a casual and comfortable setting.
Captain's Steak and Fish House (also called The Captain's Quarters) is a small neighborhood eatery located at 3566 Milwaukee Avenue, just minutes from the hotel. New owner, Flavio Renzulli, took over the restaurant in January and is in the process of updating the interior and some of the methods of preparation but is keeping most of the items on the menu and has retained Davy Haro, head chef for the past 30 years. He plans to close the restaurant from 5:30 to 7:30 on September 26 to ensure the complete focus of the entire staff is on our party. Flavio has also agreed to let us order individually from their complete menu.
Take a look at the location and menu on their web site at: http://www.captainsnorthbrook.com Of course you'll find they have steak and seafood of all varieties at very reasonable prices but they also have salads, sandwiches and burgers. And for those of you thinking of seafood, in addition to favorites like shrimp, sole, scallops and salmon, Captain's also offers great Midwestern treats like fresh pan fried perch and rainbow trout. You'll also discover an excellent assortment of seasonal craft beers at the fully stocked bar.
All Bravo Company, 1/35 veterans, family and friends who would like to attend should contact TJ Blue as soon as their plans are set so we can let the folks at the Captain's Steak and Fish House know how many of us to expect. This can be done by email teej1010@gmail.com; by phone 843-525-1098 or by snail mail at 201 Pleasant Point Drive, Lady's Island, SC 29907. Alonzo Jones has been in and out of the hospital recently and will not be attending the reunion this year so please send your responses my way and keep Alonzo in your thoughts and prayers.
TJ Blue -- Ladys Island SC USA -- 09/09/2014 Email 4763. My big art show is coming up again - the reason I have been unable to attend the reunions. The year of my husband Mike Tryon's death, I established an award in his name, using my own funds. I was wondering if anyone from the 35th would be willing to donate to add to this award. Mike was there with me every year, and I really miss him, as does everyone else. It will go to the artist whose work Mike really would have liked. It's aside from the regular awards, and it's called the Mike Tryon Memorial award. Check out our web site below and see what you think. If anyone is interested, checks can be made out to Arts on the River (we are sponsored by a 501c3 organization - Uptown Columbus), and sent to 6162 Cape Cod Court, Columbus, GA 31904

The Library of Congress wants to hear your wartime stories!
The United States Congress created the Veterans History Project (VHP) in 2000 as part of the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. ... Veterans can record a 30 minute or longer conversation about their military experience; gather 20 or more pages of memoirs, diaries, or journals; provide 10 or more photographs or letters and submit them to VHP for inclusion in this historical project. All submissions must be original materials and will become the property of the Library of Congress, so keep copies for your own records. VHP field kits that can be used by veterans, family members, or Boy Scouts to recorded the wartime stories can be downloaded and printed from VHP website at www.loc.gov/vets. There will never be enough thanks to any of those who paid the ultimate price...but I hope they know there are many out here in this world who are sincerely appreciative!

The two Companies combined suffered nine KIAs. It has recently been discovered that there was actually a tenth KIA, an artillery guy helping out during the fight. We have come across Operational Logs from E Battery, 41st Artillery, I Field Force. On April 1, 1968, a Quad-50 from that unit was air-lifted to Mile High. On 04/15/1968, PFC James E Nicolaisen of the Quad-50 unit assisted in the 35th Inf fight as a stretcher-bearer. The Logs report he somehow became separated from the engaging units and his body was found April 17, 1968 during an infantry unit sweep. It is very possible that sweep was actually either C or D Company recovering their dead. We would be interested in communicating with anyone who recalls the incident.

With memorial day almost here. i remember the day when had a point man with a dog airlifted to our unit 3rd platoon company c ist bn 35th infantry. things were really hot. something happening every day. we were on a ridge line on a trail and there was this huge rock. i mean the size of small garage. we headed out on patrol and as the point man just went past this huge rock we were ambushed. He was hit in the stomach. fell unconscious. after a brief fire fight we pulled back. we quickly brought in C4 to blow the trees for a landing zone to get him out. which we did. today I always wondered if he made it. I do not think so. if he did what is doing today. the point dog survived but never alerted. the VC paid a price for that day. not all got away. I will never forget this day till I die!

Tom O'Connor -- Staten Island NY USA -- 05/17/2014 Email 4706. I just sent out the following to all Cacti Members with known e-mail addresses in southeast Texas: I am posting this in case there are others in that area we are missing:
On May 6, 2014 the remains of Cpl Lucio R Aguilar M Company 35th Infantry Regiment 25th Infantry Division were at long last accounted for. He was lost in action over 60 years ago on November 28, 1951 during actions in North Korea and his remains were finally identified just 10 days ago.
Our Cacti Brother's remains will be brought home to the Corpus Christi, TX area in the near future for services and burial.
Over the past number of years we have had several of our Cacti Brother's brought home from Korea. Most of them were lost in this very same action.
We have always been successful in the past in seeing that we had at least one or more representatives of the 35th Infantry Regiment on hand to help welcome home these heroes.
I am contacting today all the Cacti who I can identify as being from Southeast Texas that services will be held in the near future for Cpl Aguilar and I am asking if you might be available to be on hand to attend his burial services when they occur?
I wish I could give you a precise date and time right now but unfortunately this just isn't the nature of the event for us. We generally learn of the identification via a web site which lists all such identifications. Then we have to constantly scan and search for further information in order to identify exactly where and when the services will take place. At times we get ample warning (a week or more). At other times we get merely a day or two in order to react. I am proud to say that over the past several years we have always been successful in garnering representation at these services in order to show proper appreciation to our returning hero and their remaining family.
So we ask for your help but at the same time we warn you that we may only be able to give you a very short notification. Our best hope is that some of you on this list will genuinely tell us that you will be happy to try and attend when these services take place. We recognize that we all have lives and last minute plans may preclude you from your best intentions but we hope that you will consider attending.
What does attending entail? At times there may be a short service at a funeral home just prior to removal to a cemetery where final services will be held. At other times the complete services will be at the cemetery.
For those of us who have attended several services for Cacti KIA's the services for these returning Korean War heroes is by far the most uplifting event. Rather than being sad events they tend to be events of great joy that these men are at last home.
Should you decide to attend, I think you will remember this in the future with great pleasure for your decision.
Your duties? We ask that you attend and show respect for our Brother by your mere presence. We will also supply you with a Letter of Condolence from our Association President, Bill Henson and that you extend the condolences and appreciation of all who ever served with the Cacti to any attending family members. This is not a terribly formal presentation but rather is done as you would extend condolences to family at any funeral.
It is really quite easy and gratifying duty and I promise you will be happy that you attended. By the way, please feel free to bring along your wife or any other family members and friends you may wish to bring. I do believe that they will be quite pleased with the experience of this event.
If you think that you might be able to attend please contact me at hall1335@verizon.net or jimdochall@yahoo.net
Pete Birrow, Doc Jonson, President Bill Henson and I will coordinate getting you the information you will need in order to attend.
Thanks,
Cacti Forever,
Doc Hall (Past President, 35th Infantry Regiment (Cacti) Association
Jim "Doc" Hall -- Woodbury NJ USA -- 05/16/2014 Email 4705. The following was posted in todays Adams (MN) Monitor Review in tribute to our old friend Dick Matheis.
May 8th forty-four years ago we lost our friend Dick Matheis.
For those of us who were there that day the sights, and sounds are forever engrained. We can feel the wind and the warmth from stepping out of the jungle canopy into a partial clearing. We can smell the high grass and the moisture of the jungle floor all mixed in with the powder smell of the M-16's and M-60's and M-79's.
We can hear the sudden silence of our weapons and the anxious queries in search of any wounded.
And we can feel the leaden feeling in our stomachs as we found that indeed someone was wounded and who it was.
The greens of the jungle were dark (almost black) and then ranged to the color of summer corn stalks as you pass into the clearing.
The double path we were following that day was dark gray and hard trodden and the tall weeds that adjoined the lower part of the path were streaked in lighter greens and dry tans.
In a mere moment of silence that followed the initial round of fire the air was warm and fine. It would of seemed more appropriate that a good ball game had broken out than a firefight.
But then Infantrymen did what they were trained to do and the silence was quickly broken. As a medic, I did what I was trained to do, but God help me it was never destined to be enough.
There was confusion based on the tactical situation we found ourselves in. It was not like any other firefight we were ever in. It would be explained later but in the moment nothing was in the normal range of what was by definition a continuing abnormal experience for all of us Country and City boys.
So all of us in 1st Platoon Bravo Co. 2/35th Infantry whether we were Country boys, City Boys, or something in between to this day carry those sights and those sounds and those feelings in our hearts and minds. But more than that we carry the memory and sense of loss of our old friend Dick Matheis.
So 44 years later. God Bless you Dick. Rest in Peace. You are with us forever.

We are in need of someone to handle the Memorial Banquet table sign up at the September reunions. However, Len will show the next facilitator the method he has used. Please contact me if you are willing to help with this activity.

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the untimely loss of one of our Cacti Soldiers, Specialist Thomas J. Lund, a wheeled vehicle mechanic in E Company "Surfriders". Thomas was severely injured in a motorcycle accident on Sunday afternoon and succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving via ambulance to the nearest hospital.
Specialist Lund was a good friend to many in Echo company as he served in the battalion since November 2012. According to his company comma...nder, Captain Ryan Oliver, Specialist Lund was a rising star and possessed all the best qualities of a future leader in our Army. SPC Lund was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to mission accomplishment.
SPC Thomas Lund was from Goose Creek, South Carolina and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Brianna Lund from the same home town. He loved Brianna dearly and spoke often of her to his friends at work. The Company chain of command, Family Readiness Group, Soldiers and friends from Echo company immediately responded yesterday with loving support to Mrs. Lund. We are taking all prudent measures to ensure that Brianna and her family are cared for through this difficult grieving process.
To honor his life and service, we will hold a Memorial Service at 1500 hours on Thursday, 1 May at the Main Post Chapel on Schofield Barracks. We invite any Soldiers, family members and friends of the Cacti to attend. Please keep the Lund family and our Surfrider Soldiers in your thoughts and prayers.

Wiley Dodd (Tiny) -- Riverview MI USA -- 04/02/2014 Email 4686. On January 12, 1962, United States Army pilots lifted more than 1,000 South Vietnamese service members over jungle and underbrush to capture a National Liberation Front stronghold near Saigon. Operation Chopper marked America's first combat mission against the Viet Cong, and the beginning of one of our longest and most challenging wars. Through more than a decade of conflict that tested the fabric of our Nation, the service of our men and women in uniform stood true. Fifty years after that fateful mission, we honor the more than 3 million Americans who served, we pay tribute to those we have laid to rest, and we reaffirm our dedication to showing a generation of veterans the respect and support of a grateful Nation.
The Vietnam War is a story of service members of different backgrounds, colors, and creeds who came together to complete a daunting mission. It is a story of Americans from every corner of our Nation who left the warmth of family to serve the country they loved. It is a story of patriots who braved the line of fire, who cast themselves into harm's way to save a friend, who fought hour after hour, day after day to preserve the liberties we hold dear. From Ia Drang to Hue, they won every major battle of the war and upheld the highest traditions of our Armed Forces.
Eleven years of combat left their imprint on a generation. Thousands returned home bearing shrapnel and scars; still more were burdened by the invisible wounds of post-traumatic stress, of Agent Orange, of memories that would never fade. More than 58,000 laid down their lives in service to our Nation. Now and forever, their names are etched into two faces of black granite, a lasting memorial to those who bore conflict's greatest cost.
Our veterans answered our country's call and served with honor, and on March 29, 1973, the last of our troops left Vietnam. Yet, in one of the war's most profound tragedies, many of these men and women came home to be shunned or neglected -- to face treatment unbefitting their courage and a welcome unworthy of their example. We must never let this happen again. Today, we reaffirm one of our most fundamental obligations: to show all who have worn the uniform of the United States the respect and dignity they deserve, and to honor their sacrifice by serving them as well as they served us. Half a century after those helicopters swept off the ground and into the annals of history, we pay tribute to the fallen, the missing, the wounded, the millions who served, and the millions more who awaited their return. Our Nation stands stronger for their service, and on Vietnam Veterans Day, we honor their proud legacy with our deepest gratitude.

Would like to contact Reginald Headley Newell of Uppper Hut New Zealand who contacted the Guestbook in April of 2012 (4261)saying he was writing a book about action on Vella La Vella and would like to contact people with information regarding the 35th's action on that island...my dad Jerome J. Hendrick would be very interested in Mr. Newell's book as he told me many times that the real history of the fighting on that island had never been written...he fought on Guadacanal (Galloping Horse and Mt. Austin) and in the Philippines (Umingen, the first time they faced Japanese tanks) and was wounded in the mountains in late February 1945...but...he always said that Vella LaVella was the worst, most terrifying experience of his service....he talked of being trapped at night in a mangrove swamp with Japanese snipers in the trees and of trying to advance through shoulder high grass against Japanese machine guns which had enfilading fire and were invisible...he said the fighting was the most intense he experienced....yet all accounts of Vella LaVella talk about "slight resistance by construction troops" which my father thought was obviously written by people who were not there...he would be pleased that someone is writing a book about Vella LaVella which he thought was "an absolute hell hole, worse than anything on Guadacanal"...he also loved the time spent in New Zealand..."I'd love to go back to New Zealand, I'm curious about New Caladonia and the mountains of the Phillipines but I never want to set sight on the Solomon Islands again"...would be pleased to correspond with Mr. Newell...thank you...Terry Hendrick PO Box 444, Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin
Terry Hendrick -- Lake Nebagamon WI USA -- 02/05/2014 Email 4663. Hi Guys. I just got an email from Frank "Pete" Peterson. A Co. 1st/35th, 68-69. He said last night he went down to his basement which is "way too full of stuff" and happened to walk buy a old cardboard box. He opened it and it was some writing things from VN, AND his orders for his CIB !!!!
I was on them along with James George.
Some of you know that Pete has been fighting with the VA for a very long time to be recognized for his CIB which didn't show up on his 214 as well as his Purple Heart. He is so happy. Thought I would give you an update and also...Never give up, which the Cacti never do

SSG Gustafson's daughter Stacy is my daughter-in-law and she knows very little about her Dad's service. If anyone has information, photos, etc., they would be willing to share, I and Stacy would greatly appreciate it.
I was able to get a copy of his DD-214 for Stacy which showed the above unit of assignment in Vietnam.

I am the grandson of SSG Herman Cull. A former wolfhound. I was recently doing some photo updates on another memorial page and there was somebody looking for information regarding the incident that killed my grandfather. The gentleman that was looking for this information was doing so on behalf of another veteran so that he might get his VA claim through. I am wanting to help but the POC has passed on and I don't have the information for the vet that was injured. So I am willing to help that vet. So if you can help me find out who was injured on June 9th, 1967 in Vietnam please do and send them my way.

He was a wonderful man and I would like to know more about his service. If anyone served or has info about him, please contact me.

Wiley Dodd (Tiny) -- Riverview MI USA -- 11/10/2013 Email 4640. November 9, 1967 would prove to be one of the worst days for A/1/35 when so many young men would give their lives. Robert Lawrence Hale, Donald Steven Holke, James Ray Howard, Dennis Richard Podgorny, Billy Templeton, Freddie Lee Thomas Jr., Quinn William Tichenor, Tyrone Wright..I especially remember Don Holke as he was with me on my first day in the boonies and would later relieve me of the PRC25 I was carrying after I had sprained my ankle but days later would not give it back as he felt I was to small to be carrying a PRC25 while carrying an over and under M16/Grenade launcher. He would later be KIA while carrying that radio. Gone but certainly never forgotten..

When I first came in contact with the men I served with in the army, yes the were my buddies, but at time they were just a bunch of yahoos. It wasn't until we met for our first reunion that I realized just how much I loved those guys and how much they really meant to me. At our first and last reunions with the men I served with it was just like the old song,"The tears flowed like wine." So I say to you, if you have never attended a reunion, do you damnedest to get to one. It will be the best day of your life.

I took one bite of the Veal and had to spit it out it was so bad. Other than the banquet food we enjoyed the reunion very much and got to see some guys I haven't seen since Vietnam. I will probably not be able to attend any more reunions unless they are close to Oklahoma as I don't do flying very well and can't drive 1500 miles anymore as it just tires me out too much.
