If you had the chance to meet him, I know you would never forget him. I am sure Jimmy is in heaven, telling one of his stories to anyone that will listen. We had the privilege of serving with Jimmy. He was a great soldier and a better man. It was an honor to call him friend and brother. Rest in Peace Jimmy.

Greetings, I am a POW/MIA analyst who works at the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and I am researching the case for PFC William Ellis, Jr. from A Company. My goal is to answer two questions: 1) Can anyone confirm as an eyewitness that Ellis actually died? 2) Where are his remains? I have read Mr. Kellermeyers and Mr. Hills account of the June 24, 1966 battle, and I will be reading Mr. Bells Leave No Man Behind book. Additionally, Mr. Arnold has been very helpful. However, if anyone from the 1/35th has more information concerning the fate of PFC Ellis, the battle on June 24, 1966, subsequent search and recovery efforts for PFC Ellis, or information on the North Vietnamese positions/posture on June 24, 1966, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your help.

John Lorts -- Virginia Beach VA USA -- 09/09/2015 Email 4904. Its been awhile since Ive got on the Cacti site and have not renewed my membership. Planning on getting lifetime membership next month. What I was wondering does the Cacti reunion committee ever have reunions in SC or Ga area ? I have never made a Cacti reunion and I was with B2/35th 3rd Bde Task Force 25th Inf Div before it was redesnated as 4th Inf Div in Aug 67. I arrived Jan 67 and left Jan 68. I was suppose to work in supply and as company armorer but asked company commander if he would put me in the field and he said ok.Thats how I got 11B as secondary MOS. Later down the road I was brought back from the field as company armor. I do not know if you remember the problem we were have with the m-16 bolt, but we got new ones from the states and the company commander or 1SG sent me back out to the field and exchange out every bolt from our soldiers out in the field with new issue bolt.Just thought I would jog your memory some to see if you might remember. Im not new to the
Cacti site just got busy with other things and never kept track of my membership.
Charles T Coates -- Mabelton GA USA -- 09/07/2015 Email 4902. From the wife of CSM Charles Beauchamp, USA (Ret)B co 2/35th 62-66 through facebook. She called me this morning and cancelled for the reunion and sent regrets wanting to see everyone.
This is Meloni using Charlies FB account to provide an update for those not on both our accounts. Charlie is having a very rough and slow recovery from the heart surgery. He has not been off the monitors as his kidneys decided to take a vacation. On Thursday night, his doctors and nurses put him back on a breathing tube and sedation as he kept trying to get up by himself, kept trying to tear off the tubes, etc. Praise our God that he is finally starting to respond to the medications and probably will not need dialysis which he would- had he not started responding to the Lasics (SP?). Please continue to lift him up in your prayers.

If you are interested or know of someone who would be interested in serving our Cacti Association please notify TJ Blue (teej1010@gmail.com) at your earliest convenience.
Thomas J Blue -- Ladys Island SC USA -- 08/20/2015 Email 4895. Bravo Company, 1st Battalion (Cacti Green), 35th Infantry Regiment will hold their annual reunion dinner at 5:30 pm on Friday, September 25, 2015 at La Piñata in Old Town, just over one mile from the Crown Plaza Hotel, our home base in San Diego. This is the tenth consecutive year that the company will have its own separate get together in conjunction with the annual Cacti Regimental Reunion. There will be no set program but plenty of time to visit with old and new friends in a casual, festive and comfortable setting.
La Piñata is a delightful Mexican restaurant that keeps getting better with time. It is also the oldest restaurant in Old Town, so it is steeped in tradition. For our dinner we will be in their Sala de Cactus (The Cacti Room) on the second floor in the back, away from the street. Located at 2836 Juan Street in the center of Old Town, La Piñata is only minutes from our hotel and if you have never been to San Diego you will find a wonderful assortment of shops and boutiques in the area right around the restaurant.
Take a look at the location and menu on their web site at: http://www.lapinataoldtown.com. Of course you will find they have all the traditional Mexican favorites and an assortment of soups and salads. Check out the Especiales De La Casa and get ready for a feast. There is also a great selection of cervezas, vinos and Margaritas (you can order the wine and Margaritas by the Liter to share) to accompany all of that great food. And to top it off you can pick up your own piñata right there in the restaurant. Hilda (who keeps the office running properly) and the owner have graciously indicated that we will be able to order from the regular menu and pay individually.
All Bravo Company, 1/35 veterans, family and friends who would like to attend should contact TJ Blue as soon as their plans are set so we can let the folks at the La Piñata know how many of us to expect. They can only accommodate 50-55 folks in the room we have reserved so the earlier you get on the list the better. This can be done by email teej1010@gmail.com; phone 843-525-1098 or snail mail at 201 Pleasant Point Drive, Ladys Island, SC 29907. Let us make 2015 our best reunion yet.

I could not make contact with them as they stayed in the box, that is a restricted area for all units that are training. Now the good part, two days after they departed back to Hawaii I was at this restaurant called Catfish Junction. I noticed a chalk board with names written on it. I noticed some names were Cacti KIA. I ask the owner who wrote the names she said an army from Hawaii. I wrote some names and check them on our web site. Every one was Cacti.

Dick Arnold -- USA -- 06/04/2015 4865. June 3rd marks a very important day for the men of "C" 1/35th. June 3, 1968 we along with "A" & "B" 1/35th humped to a hill outside of Ben Het about 1/2 klick from the VN Laos,Cambodian border. As we got to the top of the hill, "C" had contact with NVA. The mortars came and a ground attack followed. The firefight lasted thru the night for hours. It was this battle that took the lives of 3 very fine men. It is with honor that I pay tribute to Lt. Steven Gilmer, Sgt. Harry Butler & Spec. Ray Brockmeyer. May they all rest in peace. Salute my brothers. I would like to say thank you to all my brothers in Charlie Co. for their bravery and perseverance that allowed us to make it through the night. It was strange the attack was only at "C" Co. 3 companies only one attacked. Maybe I will get some answers at reunion. "Doc"
Forrest "DOC" Olea -- Kelso WA USA -- 06/04/2015 Email 4864. June 4 marked 45 years since we lost “Guinn”.
Those of us who knew and served with Guinn have marked this date for every one of those 45 years. Most of us have marked every day during those 45 years when thoughts of Guinn popped into our minds. Often enough it has really been multiple times per day that he has crossed our minds.
Guinn was the funniest person I’ve ever met. He never failed to have us in stitches on any occasion where we could find the time to relax. I surely miss his stories but I can hear them in my head and I can see his gyrations as he told a story using every muscle in his body for emphasis and always laughing. His memory always brings a smile to my heart as well as a tear to my eye.
Lord, I’d love to actually hear those stories again.
Those of us who get together these days at annual reunions laugh that Guinn was a bit of a camera hog. He appears in more pictures from our group’s collection than any other one person, by far. The joke among our guys today is that someone had of dropped a camera back then Guinn would of jumped on it just in case it went off.
45 years and we still miss you buddy! Truth is we won’t stop missing you until we join you but your memory helps

I am sending you this out because the 1st quarter of 2015 has come and gone and some you have not sent in your 2015 dues renewal yet. I have moved those that have not paid to the expired member status on the roster and will move Them back to an annual status when I receive their dues. I hope this is just an oversight on your part, because we need to stand strong as an association.
I have sent emails to the 77 members who receive the Times Electronically. And I sent 34 emails that I had for the 90 members who receive the Times in the mail.
Let me know if you have any questions about your membership status.

Mike Slyck -- Rochester NY USA -- 04/15/2015 Email 4837. Bravo Company, 1st Battalion (Cacti Green), 35th Infantry Regiment will hold their annual reunion dinner at 5:30 pm on Friday, September 25, 2015 at La Pinata in Old Town, just over one mile from the Crown Plaza Hotel, our home base in San Diego. This is the tenth consecutive year that the company will have its own separate get together in conjunction with the annual Cacti Regimental Reunion. There will be no set program but plenty of time to visit with old and new friends in a casual, festive and comfortable setting.
La Pinata is a delightful Mexican restaurant that keeps getting better with time. It is also the oldest restaurant in Old Town, so it is steeped in tradition. For our dinner we will be in their Sala de Cactus (The Cacti Room) on the second floor in the back, away from the street. Located at 2836 Juan Street in the center of Old Town, La Pinata is only minutes from our hotel and if you have never been to San Diego you will find a wonderful assortment of shops and boutiques in the area right around the restaurant.
And to top it off you can pick up your own pinata right there in the restaurant. Hilda (who keeps the office running properly) and the owner have graciously indicated that we will be able to order from the regular menu and pay individually.
All Bravo Company, 1/35 veterans, family and friends who would like to attend should contact TJ Blue as soon as their plans are set so we can let the folks at the La Pinata know how many of us to expect.

Went to Pleiku, Danang, Que Son Valley, Antenna Valley, An Hoa Basin, Nha Trang and back to Saigon. People were very friendly and helpful everywhere we went. The old Vietnam from the 1960s is pretty much gone. It is a very different place. Many times the Vietnamese people and Americans living over here went out of their way to help us and make us feel welcome. General Small had been recalled to the states. As he was debarking from the ship, a passing Sea Gull decorated the visor of his Cap. Glenn Perrone -- Ridgewood NJ USA -- 03/11/2015 Email 4823. Hello from Pleiku
Myself and another 4th inf. vet are here in Pleiku trying to create some new memories of this place. It is not hard to do. Everything is different. The only thing that looks the same is Dragon Mountain. There is now a 4 lane highway going out toward Camp Enari location and there are coffee plantations, pepper tree orchards, dragon fruit orchards, and a small Vietnamese military installation where Camp Enari used to be. The only thing that we could find that was leftover was the cement base for the old guard shack at the entrance and the old chopper strip which is now used for spreading out and drying coffee beans. People are very friendly but seem kind of shocked when we tell them we are returning veterans.
Maybe more postings later as we get time.

I am producing a video about LT Curtis E Chase, A, 2-35th, 1966-67; KIA 6 May 1967; and would be very interested in speaking with anyone that served with Curt, especially during the Fall and Winter 1966. You can review the project progress at cactiblue.com . If there are any images or resources you would like to access on the site please feel free.
Mark Brodie -- Hingham MA USA -- 11/18/2014 Email -- Cactiblue.com 4793. We have posted some new Vietnam pics in the Photo Section from Mike Critchfield, A, 1/35th, 1968-69. Please take a look!
Dick Arnold -- USA -- 11/14/2014 Email 4792. On November 12, 1968, I volunteered for the draft and after 10 months of training I had the distinct honor to be assigned to D Co. 1st Plt. 2/35th 4th Inf Div. That honor will never be forgotten. My thoughts, respect and admiration go to all of my comrades and brothers in arms and to Sgt. Joe Postiglione who sacrificed his life on March 8, 1970 in Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam.
Ed Hubbart -- Thousand Oaks CA USA -- 11/12/2014 Email 4791. From Beth Hansen and mom who we met at the monument dedication at Ft Benning:
Just wanted to send an email and tell you that I and my mom are thinking of you and the other cacti on this day when we remember the service and sacrifice that you and so so many other others have given.
While it saddens me that our country has had to participate in wars and so called “actions”, I do so appreciate your willingness—along with the rest of my father’s brothers, the cacti—to serve your country during those times.
While we make a special effort to let you each know on Veteran’s day how much your service has meant, and how much it is appreciated, please know that we carry these feelings with us every day. My father didn’t mention the war much. He said that was not something a little girl needed to know about. But I do know that he was proud to have served with his “team”. He never mentioned anyone that he served with without love and respect in his voice.
I remember that you told me that you were in communications during the war. So now, I want to communicate with you the high regard and the appreciation that we feel.
Thank you for your service!
Beth Hansen and Edith Allison

Peter Birrow -- Gulfport FL USA -- 11/11/2014 Email 4790. In memory of Sp4 Andrew Castelda KIA 3/12/67 - would like to wish all who served a peaceful and happy Veterans Day. God Bless.
A Friend -- USA -- 11/10/2014 4789. In March of 1967 Don Holke was one of several guys who greeted me as a FNG. That very night we were directed to go on a listening post only to be caught in a friendly crossfire between Alpha, Bravo and the enemy. Hugging the ground like snakes we would survive that and other close calls on May 19 and 22. When I twisted my ankle a few months later on some black rock that looked like hardened lava I was carrying the PRC 25 and it was Don Holke who relieved me of the load but when my ankle had recovered a couple weeks later he refused to let me have the radio back, stating that I was to small at 5 feet, 5 inches to be carrying it in the first place. I would later be chosen to go back to the rear and do OJT for Co Clerk because the previous clerk, Al Randolph, who was from my home town in MI had put me in for it. At the time Alphas SOP was that the clerks came from the field not from MOS allocation. I was instrumental in getting Don a compassionate leave and I was there to see him go
home for 30 days and there to greet him when he came back only to be KIA a short time later. He would still be carrying that same radio when he was KIA on Nov 9, 1967 and I had to list him on the morning report again except this time it would be KIA. A sad day in more ways than one. Never forgotten my friend!

A poor Young Boy has died today in a land that is far away.
He is called a hero some will say but friends and family just cry and pray.
This boy went with American pride sent by men we deem wise.
These men do not go but send our young to fight a war they would not let us win.
These men are brave during the terrible fight and try to save the ones they can that night. They wonder who will be the next to go and just hope to make another day.
A poor young boy has died today and friend and family cry and pray.
They wonder why but they do not know why a poor young boy has died today.
Some make it home but things are not right as they think of that terrible night.
That poor young boy was their family that night and now it is their turn to cry and pray.

Salvatore Raccuglia -- Temple PA USA -- 10/04/2014 Email 4776. Health and Welfare Account #1001 currently has a very positive balance. To date, there has been only one request for financial assistance for the fiscal year of 2014.
Obviously more requests could be accommodated, but we have no knowledge of these situations. But maybe you can help from today and into the future.
Should you be aware of a Cacti Brother that has fallen on hard times, suffered a loss such as a hurricane or a flood, has medical issues and is uninsurable, or anything else that cries for help, please be his ombudsman. These Health and Welfare funds were donated by you, our caring members, to be used for those in need not just to be saved for a rainy day. Please let us know about your brothers in need.

The Bravo 2/35 luncheon held last Friday was a wonderful success. 80 people out of the 85 that were expected to attend were very pleased with the event and the record breaking attendance. The lunch money that was in excess will be donated to our active duty soldiers in Hawai and held in reserve for next year. Thank you all for making this a great day.
