5220. a lady who lives in Springfield call the VFW post in Springfield where I am an officer. She explained that her brother a Vietnam vet was flying into Springfield and she wondered if some guys might like to meet his plane and welcome him.

In short it turned out he was flying in for the Cacti reunion and she thought this was his first reunion. Her brother is staying with his sister and not staying at the hotel. I told her I was a Cacti and would be happy to meet her at the airport and welcome him home. He is not aware she requested this.

His name is Walter Twyford and on the Bravo 2/35 roster says he was platoon leader for 1st plt and weapons plt. as well as Bravo XO. and it shows he served 3/67-68. Thought someone might know him.

If this is his first reunion, I thought some Bravo guys might like to also meet him and welcome him. He is flying in on Alegiant Airlines and lands at noon on Thursday 28th.

5219. Hi fellas, I'm hoping you can help a daughter of a fallen Cacti. Yesterday we were attending a Welcome Home event for Vietnam Veterans. There was a very large map of VN laid out on the ground and you could sign you name, unit, etc around the area where you served. I did that. Last night I received a message on my phone from a daughter of a fallen Cacti who saw my information at the event. She was wondering if I had served with her father, Sgt. Daniel Drummond. I told her I didn't but would try to find someone who did.

She said he always wanted to go to one of the reunions but he passed away this past May from complications from Agent Orange, Throat Cancer.

Sgt. Daniel Drummond was in country 5 months and was wounded November 13,1967 in Que Son. She believes he was in B Company, 1/35th.

If somebody remembers Sgt Drummond, his daughter would love to reach out to him. I have a picture of him as well I can share if someone thinks they might know him.

My email is mikeandjaci@gmail.com

Thank you Brothers

5214. Word was passed to me of the passing of long time Cacti supporter, family member, and Vietnam brother Jerry Matheis of Adams Mn. We met at a Cacti Reunion a long time ago. He is Dick Matheis's (B 2/35 '69-'70) brother and a Nam vet in his own right. He was accompanied by his wife, sister and brother-in-law. They came to learn about a part of Dick's life they knew nothing about. They joined the Association as family members. Jerry and the rest of the Matheis family gathered in any Cacti brothers and sisters who came their way and welcomed them into their family. If you happen to be in the neighborhood on Friday (9/14) stop in for his services. I know it will be appreciated. Jerry, may you have a joyful reunion with your parents and your little brother Dick. Lastly may you also Rest In Peace brother.

5209. Fellow Cacti: A tip for searching the Guestbook posts. When searching by name, be less specific rather than more. If you entered David Muxo you would not receive any results because I always sign Dave Muxo. Instead enter Muxo by itself. For the Comment field, be more specific rather than less to limit the results. You can also search on both name and comment at once. You will get results for either or both.

5186. We are in the process of creating a book form (a PDF) of the Cacti Timeline entries. The Cacti Timeline is a collection of dated entries recounting the day-by-day history of the 35th Infantry Regiment in Vietnam. Many of them were taken from the original battalion logs. Dave Fogg and Jim Anderson were instrumental in preserving much of this important history on our website. If any of you would like to add your experiences to the timeline there is still time. Send them to my email address. I have included a link to the Cacti Time Line below.

5122. To whom it may concern,

My name is Garrett Bergquist, and I am a great-nephew of PFC Harold Bergquist, who was killed near Sanjon, Korea on April 12, 1952. I have been trying to learn more about his service as part of my ongoing effort to document my family's history, including its military service. My recent effort to recover his records from the National Personnel Records Center proved unsuccessful, as the NPRC said his records were lost in the 1973 fire.

Does the 35th Infantry Regiment Association have any members or contacts who might have served with him? He was in Company K, 3rd Battalion. I'm trying to find out more about what he did and, especially, how he died. Family tradition has it he was accidentally killed by another soldier who was unloading his rifle for the night. I am trying to determine whether any of this is true.

Any assistance you can provide would be deeply appreciated.

Sincerely,
Garrett Bergquist

If anyone from the Cacti can help, it would be appreciated. All I can offer at this time is the both Green and Beebe are listed as graduates of the Ft Sill Field Artillery school in the same years as the Vietnam war. Please email me if you served with them.

5117. The 4th Division published "The Ivy Leaf" news letter or newspaper about once a month, got it out to the forward units and LZs. When I was about a month or two or three from DEROS, I submitted a group of photos that I took inside a Montagard (?) Relocation Camp probably near Kontum. They had to be good in order to compete for the Center Section. Every officer interested in photography sent their stuff in every month for the one shot at being selected. It must have been the May, June or July 1967, Ivy Leaf, that they chose the work of a lowly Spec.4, me. I was proud of my work.About 8 or 10 years ago I asked among the Cacti folks about the old newspapers, no luck. I wrote to the Editor of the Ivy Leaf asking if he knew of the whereabouts of a 4th Inf. archive or possibly some person who might know.

Nothing ever came of it.I brought my copy home for safe keeping then in the late 80s lost all my possessions in the Oakland Hills fire.

Hoping that someone might know where I might ask about this. Is there a Cacti museum that may have or know where their old papers are stored?

I would be delighted to have a photo of those photos if possible and pay any resulting costs. Thanks,

Just a heads-up on the Photo section. Through the magnificent efforts of Dave Muxo, we have several new collections. Mike Critchfield, A 1/35th, 1968. Randy Schaffer, B 1/35th, 1967. And our latest, well over 100 pics from T.J. Blue, B 1/35th, 1966-67. His pics have great clarity and they all are narrated. Check-out Westy getting the gospel from Major Moore while visiting the 1/35th. (if he would only have ask the RIGHT questions...)

5113. I was stationed at the Punch Bowl in Korea for 5-months (I'm still cold). While the line had been pretty well set by then, the Chinese and North Koreans wanted that real estate and we were kept very "busy". We were then sent to Koji Do and then up north again to "Jackson Heights". I did not think so at first, but over the years when I saw the juxtaposition of the North and South, I came around to believing that maybe we did some good.

5112. After we came out of Cambodia in mid-May 1970 Bravo Company 2/35th was assigned to guard engineers who were clearing back the brush outside the wire at Camp Radcliffe. This was by far the easiest duty that we had during my time there.

As a medic I was pretty well allowed to hang out anywhere I chose to during this time so naturally I chose to hang out with my buddy Guinn.

On this particular day I was sitting on a fallen log and Guinn started one of his stories.

Now when Guinn got started with a story he put everything he had into it. He talked with his hands and arms. He danced around on his feet. He swiveled his hips. His ears twitched. He bobbed to the left and the right. And He started laughing before he got even close to a punch line.

So Guinn started a story. He hadn’t gotten very far when this little bee came around and started buzzing at his head. While going through all his other story mode gyrations he also started swatting at the bee to shoo him away.

The bee left and Guinn forgot where he was in the story so started all over again but soon the bee was back. Guinn was twitching and dancing and laughing and swatting at the bee and soon lost track of his story but he got the bee shoo’d away for the 2nd time. And I started laughing.

Again Guinn re-started the story with all the requisite movements and again the bee returned and buzzed his head. I was laughing and Guinn was getting a bit miffed by the whole thing but he managed to chase the bee one more time.

After the bee’s retreat I was laughing so hard at the sight of this that I almost fell off my log. Guinn for once didn’t see the humor in it and I told him “it’s just a little bee, it won’t hurt you, leave it alone.”

Well, Guinn calmed down and started his story all over again with none of the body movements left out of the mix when again the little bee made his appearance. This time it wasted no time. It immediately flew to me and stung me under my right eye.

Now it was Guinn’s turn to lose it. He fell down laughing.

Within a few minutes the right side of my face blew up to twice its size and my eye closed. When we got back to Camp an hour or two later Guinn insisted that we have a picture taken of the two of us. One of my most prized possessions is that picture of Guinn and I side by side with Guinn looking at my swollen eye and laughing.

About 3 weeks after this Guinn was killed by a sniper as he sat helping to secure a landing zone for resupply. I got there as quickly as I could but it was just too late. I couldn’t help my old buddy.

Rest in peace old Friend.

Doc

Instead of just pictures, they are looking for some Vietnam Cacti who would be willing to do a short video clip that could be woven into a larger video. They want us to talk about three things: 1. What did serving in combat as a Cacti mean to you? 2. What is something you will never forget about your time in the Cacti 3. What was your proudest moment in Cacti? From these questions we can take clips and weave them together into a video. Andrea Disque and CPT Strickland are teaming up to do the video. If you have time, you could do a phone call at 337 3five3 29four3 so she could explain in more detail. Andrea is on this message as well. Time is very short so please respond now if interested. Thanks! Pete Birrow

5098. Comment: Hello Cacti. It has been a while since I have posted. My father was Capt. Ralph B. Walker, B Co 2nd BN, 1966-1967. I received a Facebook message from a gentleman who said he was a medic the night my father was KIA, May 29, 1967. His name is Bob (Robert) A. Ryan. I have communicated with a couple of you who said you did not know Bob. I just thought I would try in this larger forum to see if anyone else might know him or perhaps he might see this. I was too young to remember my father, so I treasure any memories any one has to share. Please feel free to email me at any time. This Memorial Day will be the 50th anniversary of his death. I will be at the Vietnam Wall that day. If you plan to be there, I would love to meet you. Peace and grace to all you soldiers!! ~Christine

5092. My name is Michael Dufour. I was Gator073, a 119th Assault Helicopter Company Huey pilot supporting the 1st of the 35th operating out of Firebase Tip. I am trying to find witnesses to an action that took place on January 17, 1967 on a ridge-line on the west side of the Suoi Ca valley known as the "Happy Valley?"

A recon platoon of the 1st of the 35th was pinned down and taking heavy fire by four .51 caliber machineguns in firing pits above them on the ridge-line. They were running out of ammunition and called for helicopter gunship support. The Crocs from the 119th AHC responded but didn't know the location of the friendlies or of the VC. The ground commander didn't have smoke but popped tear gas twice on his own troops to try to mark his position but the Crocs still couldn't see their location.

I had been supporting this unit since we had arrived at Lane/Hammond and I knew their position. I volunteered to mark the position of the machineguns and dove on their position twice with red smoke grenades. The Crocs then rolled in and the VC immediately retreated up the ridge-line and the platoon was saved.

LTC Kingston, the commanding officer of the 1st of the 35th submitted a recommendation for me to receive a CMH for diving on the four machineguns. Soon after, I was transferred to the 25th Division at Cu Chi and then medevaced to Japan and never received the award. I have written to President Trump, VP Pence and Senators Cornyn and Cruz of Texas trying to enlist their help. Senator Cornyn has offered to help, but I need statements from anyone who has knowledge of this action.

If any of your members remembers this action please contact me.

Thank You

5089. Hi,

I've working on setting up two accounts to accept electronic payments for Dues, Donations or Reunion Registration. Hopefully this will help some of you that have requested we accept electronic payment, but won't satisfy everyone. Below is a summary of what we are doing. You can contact me at donjohnsonbtr.dj@gmail.com or donjohnsonbtr@bellsouth.net.

We are moving forward to electronic payment of Dues, Donations and Reunion Registrations on a trial basis. At this time, we will only except payments with Google Wallet (Gmail) or PayPal. In both cases, you will be asked to get an account when you go to send the payment if you don't already have one.

You will need to email, text or call me with the information and $ amounts of what you are going to send and which of the two programs you wish to use. After this I will email or text you with request for that amount from one of the two programs with the link and instructions if needed.

Only PayPal will accept a credit card payment, but as you can see using a credit card or debit card with PayPal charges a fee of 2.95 of the transaction + $.30.

PayPal
Fully funded by your PayPal balance or a bank account linked to your PayPal account
Fee Waived
Partially or fully funded payment by a credit card, debit card or PayPal Credit.
2.9% of the transaction plus $0.30.

Google Wallet
No Fee to use linked bank account or debit card

5087. Fifty years ago today, I was leading my infantry squad through the jungle in Vietnam very close to the Cambodian border, when we came face to face with a regiment of North Vietnamese Army soldiers. Outnumbered five to one, our small company was soon surrounded. For the next thirty-six hours, we battled for our lives. We were long out of water and almost out of ammunition before a sister company was able to battle their way to reinforce us. By the time the enemy finally retreated across the border only three of us were not killed or wounded. Our lieutenant received the Congressional Medal of Honor--posthumously. Shortly before he died, we shared a creme soda I found in the bottom of my pack. Today, as I sit in my recliner, I raise a creme soda to my lips as I toast you, Lieutenant Karopczyc. May God continue to bless America.

5077. On this day in 1969, we lost my dad. Dan Gleason, C/2/35.My two sons know of Grandpa Dan, and he'd be proud of them both. I strive to be the dad for my boys that he never had the chance to be.

I spoke with Blaine Shafer several years ago, and planned on attending the reunion - but I had some serious matters arise that had to be dealt with and couldn't make it.

My family has always had a different answer to the question, "Did my dad enlist or was he drafted?" It depends on who I ask, and now 48 years later there are fewer around. The "Kennedy Father's" exemption was put in place in 1962. He went in during the summer of 1968, arrived in Vietnam in December and was killed in February. I obtained military records from DoD and they sent me a 1 page document, and it lists his Selective Service number, but it doesn't appear definitive.

The most difficult question the War put on all of us is "Why?"

We were operating about 10 KM from the Cambodian border and conducting a routine movement to contact mission. Shortly before noon we walked into a perfectly designed and executed "L" shaped ambush conducted by an estimated reinforced company of NVA from the 9th NVA Regiment. The point element of the 3rd Platoon took the initial blows but soon the entire company was engaged. There were many heroes that day including the some of the 10 WIA and 5 KIA.
