3147. This morning, as I always do, I logged onto our web site and went to our KIA page to see who we might of lost on this date. Among the KIA's listed for Sept 30 was Timothy Sines. I have read through all of these pages in the past and knew that there was a story attached to Doc Sines memorial page so I clicked on the name to refresh myself on the story. What a terrific story it is! I encourage everyone to go to Timothy Sines' memorial page on our web site and read about this terrific young man. The article was beautifully written by Brent McClellan. I have an address for him but not an e-mail address. If you read this Brent please contact me. I wonder if you ever contacted teh family? I've just checked and it appears that Little Doc's Mother is still alive in Columbus, OH. I would like to send her a copy of the story unless you would rather do this yourself. Cacti Forever,
Doc Hall

This is part of a national event called "run for the fallen". This event (called "A mile in their shoes" )will take place at the Convent of the Sacred Heart/ 1177 King Street/ Greenwich, CT and begins at 7:00 AM (until 11:00 AM). My Wife and I will be driving up from our home in New Jersey to attend and "walk a mile" in memory of Jonathan and all the other heroes. If any Cacti is close enough to attend this event I encourage you to do so. If you are not close enough or are unable to attend then I encourage you to "walk/run" a mile in your own community that day in memory of Jonathan and our other Cacti KIA's (as well as all Iraq/Afghanistan KIA's) When you do please contact me at my e-mail below and let me know so that I may pass on the word to Debi so she can see that we all care and appreciate the sacrifice that their family has made for all of us. Jim \"Doc\" Hall -- Woodbury NJ USA -- 08/19/2008 Email 3109. I would love to come to all of the reunions but, the time of year is just not appropriate to all of us that are retired. To do this in the summer months rather than in the spring or fall depending on where the reunion is held is beyond me. When all the kids are in school (grandkids) it only makes sense to hold this function before or after that time frame. If this makes any sense to the rest of the group then lets make a change. Room rates and travel change thourghout the year. Lets capitilize on this. Hope to see everyone on Reno depending on the dates.......Phil Collins 1/35 67-68

John Linn B 2/35 -- USA -- 08/16/2008 Email 3105. Jonathan Lootens (Charlie Co 2/35th Inf) was KIA as a victim of an IED near Kirkuk, Iraq on Oct 15, 2006. On July 31st of this year his Mother Debi Qualtieri drove from her home in Connecticut to Royalton, IL to see a flag planted in memory of her son during the "runforthefallen" (an event where runners crossed America and planted a flag every mile in memory of one of the fallen heroes of the War on Terror). The "runforthefallen" event concludes at Arlington Cemetery on Sunday August 24th and in many communities across America local groups are holding their own commemorative runs that day. Debi Qualtieri is sponsoring such a run in memory of her son Jon that day in Greeenwich, CT. The event will be from 7am to 11am at the Convent of the Sacred Heart at 1177 King Street in Greenwich, CT. Debi would like to invite any Cacti who live anywhere near Greenwich to come out to help memorialize Jon and all of his fellow Cacti who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. I will be driving up from my home in New Jersey. I want to encourage any Cacti in the area to join us. BUT is is recognized that most of you cannot make this trip to Connecticut SO I would like to offer this alternative. Whereever you are in this great country please consider running or walking a mile that day (Sunday August 24) in memory of Jonathan and all our other young brothers. After you do so please contact me at my e-mail address below and I will pass this information on to Debi that you have walked in support of her and Jonathan. This is a small thing to do to honor the memory of our young heroes. So get out there and run (or maybe most of us better walk) a mile that day. Run/walk on your local track or walking path or even through your neighborhood in honor of these young men. Take your whole family along and make this a day of remembrance for all of our KIA's. And don't forget to contact me to tell me that you have done this. Jonathan and Debi (and hundreds of other family members across this country) have made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us. Please help us show them how much this means to all of us. Thanks, Doc Hall

Ronald D. Ray -- Sacramento CA USA -- 08/11/2008 Email 3099. The 2008 reunion is over and we are all coming down after the great high of meeting again with old friends.
A special thanks to Doc Johnson for another terrific event. Though it doesn't seem possible they get better every year.
Bill Wilds and all of his crew are owed a debt of gratitude by all of us who attended. Your efforts make it so much easier for all of us. We know that you all give up a lot of your valuable time in visiting with old buddies to do this for all of us.
A special thanks for above and beyond the call of duty goes to Tom Kehoe and Rick Strawn. These two guys practically lived behind the bar and I know it was a sacrifice for both of them to do this. Thanks you both.
Now, it has come to my attention that we had a few mix-ups in our registrations and banquet meal fee collections. None of us are professionals in this and all have to give valuable time to make this work as well as it does. Because of this we somehow missed in collections of both registration/membership fees and collecting for banquet dinners.
We paid for several more dinners than we received payment for. It appears that this mainly occured in "Walk-in" members.
If you attended the banquet and didn't have an opportunity to pay for your meal please send a check in the amount of $40 per meal to Doc Johnson at 14516 Shenandoah Ave./ Baton Rouge, LA 70817.
If you didn't get an opportunity to pay for your registration please send a check to Doc for $10 for you plus $5 for any additional guest over 18.
If you were not a member while attending the reunion please send a check to Doc in the amount of $25 for a hard copy subscription of the Cacti Times or $15 for the electronic version.
We apologise if we missed you late comers. Again we are all volunteers and sometimes we get caught up in the great times at the reunion. Welcome to the Cacti and we appreciate your cooperation in catching us up.

He and his wife Jean and her sister Barbara attended the St. Louis reunion. He was the picture of health and always had a great smile. He will be greatly missed. He was my squad leader in Vietnam and was a great soldier. His son is on his third tour in Iraq and is returning on emergency leave. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.
John Lorts -- Virginia Beach VA USA -- 08/01/2008 Email 3089. The St. Louis reunion was great! Maybe in terms of sheer numbers; but for sure in energy and comradeship, our biggest and best ever! However, numbers and complexity take much work behind the scenes to make all run smoothly. Your Cacti Officers remain as committed as ever to make the NEXT reunion even better. But alas, we are not spring chickens any longer, we are going to need long term help. Registration, bar help, etc. all are areas where volunteers are needed. Please consider lending a hand in one of these areas. In the final analysis--we Officers are merely stewards---it is YOUR organization. Thanks and On To Reno! Dick

Doc Johnson -- Baton Rouge LA USA -- 07/08/2008 Email 3065. Hi fellow Cacti. Hope everyone had a great 4th. Just wanted to pass on something I experienced the 4th. In Roswell, Ga they had a ceromony for Veterans at the Green Lawn Cemetary. There they had set up a scale model of the Wall that is just like the one in DC. All 58,000 names were on the Wall. This wall is carried by and 18 wheeler that goes from state to state in honor of our Veterans. Also the 18 wheeler is escorted by a group of Volenteers from a cyclist group called the Patriot Guard. They are there for familiies having funeral services to make sure anti-war protesters don't disrupt the service so the family can have a dignified funeral service for the veteran. I was a little awed and nervous because I had never received this recognition when I came back and to be part of it was moving.I was saluted as I walked down pathway to the Wall ceromony area. I was able to pay my respects to our fallen brothers and I was able to etch their names from the wall to put with their info I have on hand now. It has taken me 41 years to be able to accomplish this. I thank everyone who contributed to the research for the Cacti Site. If you have not been to the wall in DC and would like to have the opportunity to pay your respects to your fallen brother or loved ones then I would say to check this website out and check when the Traveling Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall will be in your state. Larry Klein1946@aol.com should be able to direct you to their travel schedule. He is leader/coordinator of the Patriot Guard.Chuck Coates B2/35th Jan67-Jan68

I am pleased to announce the receipt of over 300 photos from Mike Kurtgis who served as the FO for B-2-35 in the 1968 - 1969 time frame. He worked for Capt Rothlisberger in the field. Mike's photos include his field duty and his later stint as an Air Observer for DivArty at LZ Oasis. Mike was there for the attack on the Oasis in May of 1969 and has some memorable pictures of the aftermath. Mike has many pictures of the Oasis area and staff personnel as well as pictures of the indigenous peoples. Mike was succeeded in the field by Lt William "Wally" Wallin.
I would invite anyone from B-2-35 and those in the Oasis TOC in the 68-69 time frame to visit Mike's album at the website. Mike also contributed a great "war story" about his assignment as an Air Observer who had no aircraft. Funny stuff.

Left out of their at Cam Rahn Bay.Served from November 66 to November 67. I was in C company 35th Battalion. Did my basic in A company. Lost my hearing from Vietnam being around the 8" howitzer guns. But I made it back home and that is a blessing. I served with a great bunch of guys whom I thought I would keep in contact with and never forget any of their names. I have pictures of guys that I can not put a name to. But I remember the guys.A few names that I do have (George waldo/Freddie stone/ James McNaab. My good buddies Joe Bratton and James Criswell I have had some contact with. James in particular. I have not heard from Joe Braton in a while. The last I heard he has Agent Orange. I went to school with him way back when.. It would be nice to hear from some of the guys. Uhhh hear. Let me rephrase that. SEE.. or get a letter from. I don't hear to well. My one ear is completely deaf and my other is partially. Thanks to the Vietnam experience!!!!! I have not been able to get any compensation for it as I have been trying for years. Actually my wife has been trying for me. I don't do much talking on the phone as it is hard for me. with just the one ear partially working. God Bless all of you.

Kim Boardman -- Nekoosa WI USA -- 06/04/2008 Email 3035. Many of us are over 60 now.Back then "the kids" among us were 19. Us "old guys" at 21 learned quickly that this was not an issue. We were young but we became old in days or weeks. We became closer than most families and we swore that we'd stay close even when we came back to the "World". Of course, we didn't.When one of our "Brothers" died we had no time to grieve. The immediate area had to be secured. The wounded and the dead had to be evacuated. Ammo had to be resupplied. Then it was time to "move out".Grief was a luxury we couldn't afford. Awareness of your surroundings might allow you to live. To allow anything to interfere with that awareness might mean that you die. So we put them on the choppers and we did our best to forget. So now nearly 40 years later, we still suppress our grief. But we never forget. We still see those 19, 20, 21 year old faces in our minds. Their memories pop up on certain dates. Or maybe the are triggered by sights or smells around us. For many of us a week, or maybe even a day, doesn't pass without those memories. These "Brothers" we can never forget. Our memories of them are sad or happy; terrifying or tranquil; faded or focused; denied or welcomed. But our memories are forever.Today, June 4th, is one of those dates that trigger my memories. 38 years ago we lost my old buddy Guinn. Robert George Guinn KIA June 4, 1970. We miss you buddy. Rest in Peace.
Jim \"Doc\" Hall -- Woodbury NJ USA -- 06/04/2008 Email 3034. Hey you bunch of grunts from "C" 1/35, today is a great day. 40 years ago today, we all had our lives changed forever. Some of us were blessed to carry on and be here and appreciate the lives we have. We are also here so we can remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. I just want to let each and everyone of you that are reading this know that, I am honored to have served with the warriors of "C" 1/35. I will not elaborate on this day because it is not necessary for those of us that were there. I would like to ask everyone that reads this to give a hand salute and a moment of silence for: Harry Butler, Ray Brockmeyer & Steven Gilmer. Thank you brothers. SaluteBe well brothers. "DOC" Olea

I drove the commanding officer for the first six months and then drove 3/4 and 1/2 ton trucks. I spent 90% of my time in the motorpool. I visited Schofield Barracks last year and I spoke to Major O'Brien. He was very welcoming and allowed me an escorted tour of the new barracks. I would love to hear from anyone who served around the same time. Ray

Patrick O'Connor -- Southington OH USA -- 04/21/2008 Email 2977. I had John Jakovac's POW/MIA bracelet from my high school days (68-72). I did a lot of research on the loss of team 3A back in the early 90s and was in contact with some folks from the 2/35th regiment/bn and 3/25th brigade during the May 67 period.
Now my daughter is doing a senior year high school project on a person that served in Vietnam and is doing it on John Jakovac. She is most interested in what he was like as a person--I already have lots of info on the operation Team 3A was lost on.
On this site we found the first picture that is identified as him during his time in Nam. It is at: http://www.cacti35th.org/regiment/kia/kia_details.php?person_id=630&battalion=BDE
This implies someone related to this site may have pictures of him and probably knew him.
We have heard many stories about Jakovac having his own team, being part of another team etc and he probably was different things at different times. Anyway it seems very few people that survived the operation and the war knew him very well. Allison and I would appreciate hearing from anyone that knew him in the 1/14th, A Company (their guestbook is down, but we are trying to contact some 1/14th folks), where he was when he first arrived in Nam, or with the HHC 3/25 LRRPs. He arrived in Nam in Jan 66 with 1/14th we think and was killed 30 May 67 with the rest of LRRP Team 3A. Send us an email if you have any information or questions. Thanks--for then, and now.

Peter J Birrow -- Tyngsboro MA USA -- 03/31/2008 Email -- http://B 2/35th Luncheon 2965. As I read the guestbook entries I see mention of the 2/35th being being assigned at Schofield Barracks as part of 25th Inf.As I read those entries it makes me proud as a fellow Cacti from the Vietnam era.I was originally assigned to B2/35th 3rd Bde Task Force 25th Inf Division when I arrived. Later in August we were redesinated as 4th Inf Division. I kind of got attached to 25th and was with them longer so I chose to where 25th Patch even though I can wear the 4th as well. What this is leading up to is that I had the privledge to serve with 1/21st Gimlets at Schofied Barracks Quad D as a 11B rifleman Sp/4 after two different tours in Nam 67-68 B2/35th and 70-70 E Troop11th ACR/Air Calvary(ARPS_Aero Rifle Plt)in 1973. Fortune would have it that I was able to get out of 11B and go OJT 106RR with CSC 1/21. For the rest of my career I was in 11H MOS CSC Antitank Plt and later became 11H TOW Missile. My tour at Schofield allowed me to get out of 11B and become a 106RR gunner to a TOW Missile Section Ldr.When Hum Vees started changing out 106RR gun jeeps and I loved it.Retired just before Dessert Storm/Shield whichever one was first.

Hello Cacti, I want to give a special thanks to John Lorts in regards to my very wondeful visit to the 25th Infrantry Division at Schofield Barracks Tuesday March 25th, 2008. The 2/35th had a ceremony for the fallen Comrades that
got killed in the crash last year in Iraq,at Division Headquarters. Some of the fallen Comrades families were in attendance, it was sad and emotional.John knew I was going to be in Hawaii and suggested I visit Schofield I admit I had reservations because I was never on Schofield during my time with the 2/35th--66-67 Nam,worked in the Toc in the Arty Liaison section. Colonel Sam Whitehurst is the Batallion Commander, he and his people treated me like I was Special because I was in the Nam,very nice. After the ceremony we went to the state house, they had a Hawaii Medal of Honor Ceremony for Service men and woman who have fallen that were from Hawaii and for fallen Comrades that their unit was from Hawaii.
This had the top brass from the Pacific Command on down from all the Branches. A total of 31 Medals were given to famlies and friends of our fallen comrades . Schofield has newly renovated barracks.I can't say enough of the reception they gave me. Thanks again John.

PJ Braun -- Milwaukee WI USA -- 03/19/2008 Email 2956. I made a post on 13 Mar about 12 Mar 67 but must have canceled it or lost it. Anyway would like to thank Dick Arnold,Doc DeRosa, Bill Henson just to name a few who have been instrumental in my search for answers and the Cacti site.I was there on that day almost 40 years ago and I'll always remember it because that is where I received my purple heart/CIB. But the reason I'll always remember that day is not only because there were so many lives lost, but a fellow soldier while we were out on the airstrip on stand-by had a preminition that he was going to die just before we got alerted to assist one of our sister units that had made contact. As we loaded up on the hueys some us us guys tried to assure this soldier he would be ok. Well as it turned out,it wasn't ok.When we got to LZ and were dropped off and started moving thru woods incoming rounds stated coming thru the trees and that's when it happened. There was an explosion I was hit in face, but not serious. Later I found out this same soldier had been hit from that explosion also, but had been fatal.I'm not trying to draw attention to myself, but these are memories you don't forget

Larry Laughlin -- Geneva IL USA -- 03/12/2008 Email 2954. March 12, 1967 and the next day are days I often think about and will never forget. I was the medic in 1st platoon B co 2/35. As I was short timer I was replaced by another medic and I stayed with the forward aide station when this action took place. When news came down of this action all the medics came to help with the wounded. I knew so many of these guys I was filling out cards with all there info. The next day I was asked to go to grave registration to verify the KIA's. It was a very hard time as you know these guys where like your brothers. Seeing them stretched out on the litters is something I will never forget. Rest easy my brothers.

It is an excellent 32-page magazine, and John Lorts put a considerable amount of time and effort into the publication. Unfortunately, a number of e-mail copies bounced back to me because of addreses no longer used by members. If you signed up and paid to receive an electronic copy of Cacti Times and haven't received it, this is the reason. We need your help in keeping our e-mail roster current. I encourage members to accept this small responsibilty to continue receiving in a timely manner this excellent publication about Cacti activities.

Ron Papineau -- Greensboro MD USA -- 03/07/2008 Email 2946. As usual I am running a little late with a project but here is what we are trying to do. As most of you know Dick Arnold has spent several years trying to collect a photograph for each of our Vietnam KIA's Memorial Pages. Dick has done an outstanding job but still we are missing photo's for nearly 80 of these. In several cases we know where these heroes are buried. In an attempt to reach family and friends of these old friends (and to honor them for their sacrifice) we are searching for volunteers to visit their graves just prior to Easter and leave a memorial card in their honor. We have need of volunteers in 20 states involving 37 locations. These states and locations are: Alabama -- Birmingham and Crenshaw; Californai-- Compton, Glendale, Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Sanger; Florida-- Clarcona, jacksonville, and Tavares; Georgia-- Brazelton, Ft. Benning, and Valdosta; Illinois-- Belleville; Indiana-- Hammond; Louisiana -- Albany; Massachussets-- Southbridge; Minnesota-- Anoka; Missouri-- Independence; Nebraska-- Omaha; New York-- Buffalo and Hawthorne; North Carolina-- Abbotsburg, Fair Bluff and Southern Pines; Ohio-- Toledo; Pennsylvania-- Archbald; South Carolina -- Charleston, Greenville County, and Landsford; Tennessee-- Lafayette; Texas -- Jacksonville, Losoya, and Houston; Virginia-- Danville and Hopewell; Washington-- Seattle.
Again we are looking for volunteers to go to the cemeteries and mark the graves of these heroes prior to Easter. I can send you a copy of the memorial by e-mail (and you would have to have it laminated at the nearest office supply store) or I can send you a laminated copy of the memorial but if I do this it would have to be very soon in order for it to get to you in time. Please contact me at my e-mail address below if you can perform this duty. Cacti Forever -- Doc Hall

Denise Cholka-Shaw -- Black River Falls WI USA -- 02/29/2008 Email 2935. Thinking about the spouses of Veterans, I wanted to write a poem for them. it's called:
A VETERAN'S SPOUSE:::
A VETERAN'S SPOUSE BE IT MAN OR WOMAN IS A GEM THAT IS SO RARE,
THIS PERSON IS A REAL PATRIOT SO TRUE THAT NONE CAN EVEN COMPARE.
WHILE THE BRAVE VETERAN TRAVELS THE WORLD HE OR SHE IS NEVER ALONE,
BECAUSE THEIR COUNTERPART IS THERE KEEPING THE FIRES BURNING AT HOME.
SO MANY MOVES AS THEY FOLLOW THEIR VETERAN FROM STATION TO STATION,
DOING THIS SO THAT THE VETERAN CAN CONTINUE TO SERVE A GRATEFUL NATION.
THIS PERSON RECEIVES NO MEDALS, NO RIBBONS NOR ANY GOLD,
THIS IS SO BECAUSE THEY HAVE PLEDGED FOREVER TO HAVE AND TO HOLD.
TODAY WE NEED TO HONOR THESE LOVING SPOUSE'S AS A PATRIOT SO TRUE,
FOR THESE BRAVE INDIVIDUALS ALSO SERVE THE RED, WHITE AND BLUE./// I wrote this one especially for the wives who follow their veteran through out his life. hope you enjoy it. Wayne D.(Lucky)Lund

Upon his request I will be giving out his address at the care home that he is currently at. He really is missing the correspondence with you all and he is hoping that some time in the near future that he will be able to get back on line. Michael G. Willard -- Wichita KS USA -- 02/18/2008 Email 2929. On the 26th of Jan. I returned from a two week visit to Vietnam-after 40 years. It was a memorable experience.
I was able to hook up with Mr. Phong in Saigon as my guide.
Some remember him as the interperter for 2/35 in the late 60s. He is a great guy and is available to assist any Cacti alumni that should make the trip. I did get up to Quang Nagi Province and visited old stomping grounds. The Mekong Delta was included also - I waded in that area in the early 60s. It was a long plane ride but I highly recommend the trip if you are so inclined.

I wish I could have met him. I would like to know more about him. I don't have any pics of him (except what I just found on this site) and would like to get one to do a scrapbook page about him. My grandparents, Doris & Ford Vincent, use to talk about him like he was a saint. I grew up on stories about how awesome he was. It is for my own personal use and I will give you credit. What I would like to find is a military photo,an everyday photo or school photo. But since it's going to be a page "In Memory of..." I would like to have a few Military photos. Thanks again.

My son Richard is named after Ricky and he was born on the birthday of Ricky's mother. He was like a gift to her. The thing I remember most about Ricky is that he planted orange pits in a planter and everyone said that it couldn't grow on Long Island. Well, his folks kept the tree on the back porch for several years. It was like a living memorial to Ricky. Ricky has a brother, Larry, living on LI the last I heard. Thanks for your service and the nice things you all said about him.
Jerry Schwarzman -- East Islip NY USA -- 01/19/2008 Email 2907. My Great Uncle John Larry Jeffers served in the Vietnam war with the 2nd Batallion 35 Infantry Regiment. He was only 19 when he was killed by small arms fire. The memory of my Great Uncle still lives among our family. He was loved very much. We are all so proud of him and what he did for our country. SP4 John Larry Jeffers inspired me to join the military and serve as well. I am the only girl in the family that has joined. I know how he felt when he left our small town. I also know how he felt when he was told he was leaving for war. My Great Uncle will never be forgotten. His legend will live on in our family through the military members that we have now and the ones that we will have in the future to come. A1C Smith, USAF

He was a 30 caliber Water Cooled Machine Gunner and served from the Solomons to Luzon with the regiment. I was visiting my parents this weekend in Virginia and for the first time in my life, he told me of some of the combat action that he was involved in. He was wounded in action in Feb. 1945 on Luzon (shrapnel to the chin and face)but only missed 10 days of action. He also gave several other accounts of some of the combat action that he and other members of the company were involved in. Hearing these accounts was remarkable. Paul J. Wida -- New Windsor NY USA -- 11/18/2007 Email 2869. I am fortunate enough to live close enough to Washington DC that I am able to get down there 5 or 6 times per year to visit the Wall. Whenever I go I always try and take some sort of written memorial to some of my old buddies to leave in front of the panel holding their names. It is always very gratifying to then stand back and watch visitors bend down to read something about one of my old pals. I know for that moment that my buddies live again in the minds of the reader. As I think about my latest visit this past Saturday it dawns on me that perhaps there are many of you out there who would like to memorialize old friends but don't live near enough to Washington to do this. I just want any Cacti to know that I would be most happy and honored to do this for you. If you would like to honor an old friend (or friends) I would be most happy to deliver a memorial to the Wall for you. I can't get there every week but I would be most happy to do this during my visits to the Wall.
If you'd like for me to deliver a memorial for you please feel free to send it to me at 1335 N. Broad St/ Woodbury, NJ 08096. I will do my best to perform this duty with the reverence that such a memorial deserves. (Just a note: because on any given day it could be raining or snowing or windy it would be best to laminate a memorial in order preserve them long enough to last a day. Also please make sure I can tell for whom the memorial is intended. Cacti Forever/Doc Hall
Jim \"Doc\" Hall -- Woodbury NJ USA -- 11/17/2007 Email 2868. First of all, to all my Veteran Brothers, have a great Veterans Day. Tomorrow, 11-13-07,will be the 40th anniversary of a very special person who gave his life for his country. Lt. Glenn Randy Eisenhour, known to his platoon as Ike, was killed during a Combat Assault, just south of DaNang. I became very close to Ike during our time together. He was an oustanding athlete out of East St. Louis , Illinois. He was a natural leader, who cared for all of his men in his platoon. When the crap hit the fan, Ike was at the front leading by example. I have'nt ever, and never will forget how much this man meant to me. When us veterans call each other Brother, and I call Ike Brother, it is from the heart and soul that we do this. Lt. Ike was the greatest friend I ever had. I have missed him dearly for 40 years. When I pass on, I sure hope the Good Lord allows me in Heaven so I can be reunited with my friend, and my "BROTHER". I think I can say for all the Brothers of 1st Platoon, CO. B, 1/35th, we love you Ike, and may God Bless You.
Michael Hogan (HOGIE) -- Frisco TX USA -- 11/12/2007 Email 2867. Tomorrow (11/13/07) will be the 39th anniversary of the fire fight on LZ Jean. We lost two fine men from C Co., 1/35th, and I know we had some WIA's as well. While Tony Culotta and Michael Brandin left us that day, they live in our memories and shall not be forgotten. Fine young men who served their country well. Here's to them both and to their families.

Bob Stedman -- Columbus OH USA -- 11/12/2007 Email 2865. The Veterans Day Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was also a recognition of the 25th Anniversary of "The Wall'. The turnout of Vets from all Branches as well as all conflicts was a heartfelt and memorable recognition of the sacrifices that we as Veterans have endured, along with that of our own Families and those Family Members of our Buddies who have gone before us. Thanks to Gary Lee and Kevin(1st 35th.) for being there and to anyone else we may have missed meeting there.

And there is a thing that was put on our uniforms that did not look like a twenty-fifth infantry electric strawberry, I was getting out then and did not want to slow down the process, but this type of inconsistency should be rectified. Please get back to me. Bruce A. SuttlesAt: Basuttles@hotmail,com
Bruce A, Suttles -- Alamogordo NM USA -- 11/07/2007 Email 2861. It has become a habit of mine to check the Guestbook regularly for postings that might close a "loop" from some disconnected period from my past. Two of the most recent postings have caused me to write a note myself. First, Bill Hensons reminder to renew our membership. This is a very important action for each of you. The life of this association depends on the support of the members. There has been a great deal of good accomplished in the past ten years and still more to be done. I urge all of you to continue to be a part of this and encourage others that have not joined to do so between now and July. Also, the great contribution by Don Keith in the way of sharing the photographs was much appreciated. I hope that his gesture will send others searching through shoe boxes in the attic for those old photos from thier respective 365 Tour. Thanks Don. Good work in taking the photos and keeping up with them for all these years. We all need to follow your example and keep our history out there for others to experience. Peace and Grace to all my Cacti Brothers... Blue and Green.Lee
Lee Ingram -- Arab AL USA -- 11/06/2007 Email 2860. My Grandfather (Gustav Durward Schmidt) served in Guadalcanal, and was injured in combat. He has recently expressed that he would like to get in contact with some of the people that he served with. I was unable to find his name anywhere, or any of the names that he mentioned. I did notice a person by the name of Frank Marks who I believe I remember seeing as an editor for a newsletter that my grandfather has.

Terry Savely -- Sugar Land TX USA -- 11/02/2007 Email 2856. I have just read through the guestbook and saw Msgt. Butter and Ernest Corria messages. I went in country 1967 first at LZ Liz where I meet you guys. Ernest was leaving LZ Liz if I remember correctly, but Msgt. Butter stayed until he tour was over. The TOC was my home and the guys were my family for 11 months 25 days as we moved around Vietnam. I would like to hear from more of the TOC guys from the 2/35 "Cacti" Blue. I also have a set of progresive pictures of a hole (under ground bunker) that one of our company's found. A couple of these pictures are in a book "The Vietnam War" by Douglas Welsh. One picture is with Mgr. Ben Crosby bending over the hole with a VC coming out with hands above his head. Its good reading the messages -- lets see more TOC RTO's writing in. BOBBY HURT -- BIRMINGHAM AL USA -- 10/24/2007 Email 2851. I was a forward observer for the 4.2 inch mortars in the 1/35, mostly with recon, from January 1966 to December 1966. I'm writing a paper for a university project on the effect that killing an enemy combatant for the first time has on the mind. I know that it's different for different people but I would like to use some examples. If anyone would care to dredge up old memories/feelings and send me an email on this subject, I would truly appreciate it. I would like to know how prepared you felt you were to kill, how you felt immediately after and what the longer term effect, if any, was.
Thanks,
Mike

We deployed for several training events including Cobra Gold in Thailand and to Australia. BC was LTC Clemmons and I believe his command was followed by LTC Richardson. I'd love to hear from any soldiers that might have served during that time.
Wes Shivers -- Tyler TX USA -- 10/15/2007 Email 2847. My name is Kristin and I am the wife of fallen soldier Joshua S. Harmon who was one of the cacti killed in the August 22, 2007 helo crash in Iraq. There are not many things my frazzled mind remembers from the services of my husband, but one thing I distinctly remember are the men who walked into the funeral home and saluted the casket of my husband the day of his wake. I can not tell you how touched I was to see that, and I want to thank those men, if they chance to read this, for being there. It was amazing the amount of support we received and the hundreds of people who came to pay respects to Joshua, but I was brought to tears every time fellow servicemen, retired and active, stood in front of his casket in salute. Thank you again for being a part of honoring such a hero. May Joshua and all of his fellow soldiers rest in peace. They will never be forgotten and we will all be forever grateful for their sacrifice.

Michael Hine -- Jermyn PA USA -- 10/12/2007 Email 2845. Joe, while our association embraces all Cacti, it is true that most members are from the various wars in which the 35th has fought. The website is weighted heavily toward those members and time periods simply because that is the information we have. We would very much like to have many more Peactime and Cold War Cacti join us, bringing their stories, photos, and experiences into the already rich tapestry that is the history of the 35th Infantry Regiment. Jim Anderson, our Executive Vice President, handles the history section of the website, and is gatekeeper of the historical records that we have. Please contact him with any information that you might have, and spread the word to the Cacti with whom you served that the 35th Infantry Regiment (Cacti) Association is here for them. --Take Arms--
Dave Muxo -- Orlando FL USA -- 10/11/2007 Email 2844. I see very little about Cacti between Vietnam and Iraq on this site and I cannot find any reference to there having ever been a Combat Support Company(CSC) 1/35th before it was deactivated in 85. Is this site only about the units who faced combat?
Joe Martin -- Richmond VA USA -- 10/10/2007 Email 2843. Forty years ago today, eleven men of A,1/35th gave their last full measure I am fond of remembering them as in these lines by Bob Seger:
"My hands were steady; my eyes were clear and bright; my walk had purpose; my steps were quick and light. I held firmly to what I thought was right"
Most of us were very young, it was War, we did the best we could - nothing more needs to be said. I have never forgotten them and feel blessed that through this marvelous Cacti Association their memories will now live on.
