Dave Muxo, The new format looks great--really looking forward to more! One problem I encountered was on KIA list, A 2/35, George Chace, 10-21-66. The heading says "More Info", but when clicked on it says it can not find link. Yet, the Timeline does have an entry for George on that date. Thanks, Dick

Fellow Cacti: We have a new menu system on the site. Although it looks much like the old one, it is different. If you see the old menu on any page, hit refresh before reporting it to me. We also have a new Vietnam Timeline system. All events are now in a database, which will allow us to do more things with them. You will not notice much difference because I made the pages look almost identical to what they were before. In the next couple of weeks look for changes in the home page and our guestbook. As always, if you encounter problems, send me an email.

"We Were Soldiers" the movie Posted By: Bob Kilpatrick Date: Saturday, 9 February 2002, at 1454 hrs My wife and I went to an advance screening of "We Were Soldiers" in NY City last night. Whew. The film is based upon Col. Hal Moore's and Joe Galloway's book, "We Were Soldiers Once... and Young," which is about the 1st Cav's fights at LZ X-Ray and LZ Albany in the Ia Drang Valley in November 1965. It deals only with X-Ray, not anything about the disaster at Albany. (If you haven't read the book, it's quite a book. I read it about once a year.) Joe Galloway and (80-yr-old) Gen. Moore kicked off an 8-day swing across the USA last nite, doing screenings for writers, reviewers, and media types. That will continue until the release on March 1. Mel Gibson does a terrific job as Hal Moore, even picking up voice inflections and mannerisms from him. What an actor. Sam Elliott plays Sergeant Major Basil Plumley. The man has no more than a few sentences in the entire movie and deserves an Oscar; he is absolutely great. (The last movie I saw in a theater was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Sam's married to Katharine Ross, so they're keeping me in the family.) Greg Kinnear as Bruce Crandall, who consulted on the Huey scenes, and Barry Pepper as Galloway. The Huey action is "Hollywooded" a little, especially to guys like us, but it's the most real and most graphic I have ever seen on film. Some of the Huey clips had me ducking. Actually, more than ducking, I forgot to breathe a couple of times. They did an amazing job. Ground action also is extremely realistic, had the audience ducking or gasping several times. The audience seemed not to know what to do at "The End." Whether to applaud, cheer, cry, or just quietly file out of the theater. Most just quietly left. My wife and I didn't say more than a few words to each other for about an hour after it was over... I think we were maybe sorting it out. It's a hell of a movie. Some guys who were close to it will hate it and some will love it, I think. It is not a documentary, but they tried to stay as close to accurate as possible while still giving the public a story they will pay to see. That's Hollywood. We talked later, for quite a while, with Joe and the Gen. and they wanted to know what we thought. I told them there was no way I could be the least bit objective, but that I wanted to congratulate them on a home run and thank them for what they have done for all of us. I think this movie may just change the public's perception of Vietnam and of those of us who fought there. That's really saying something. I have no clue of how the critics and the public will react. It is a powerful movie. Go see it, take somebody important with you. You think it's not worth the price of the ticket, I'll give you your money back. Bob

Remember TET 68? Action on Feb 9, 1968 was well documented in our Cacti newsletter last year. Today 34 years ago we were in it hot and heavy! Late in the day a short 105 round landed behind me and killed Jimmy Brennan. He had less than 2 weeks to go in the field; one of those wartime tragedies. Think of Jim today as you sip a cool one - he was Catholic kid from New York who was an MP assigned to our unit (A Co 1/35) due to all the people we lost during this offensive. I want to thank all our guys that got me to the Dustoff, especially our RTO, whose name I forget.

From the book: America’s last Vietnam battle, The 11 Days Of Christmas. ”In February 1965 thirty B-52Fs specially modified to carry conventional bombs were sent to Guam. The B-52Fs had added wing racks to carry 24 bombs in addition to the 27 bombs they could carry internally, increasing their conventional bomb load from ten tons to almost twenty tons. After many delays, on June 18, 1965, thirty B-52s took off with great fanfare from Anderson on their first combat mission, called Arc Light One. The mission was a disaster. The B-52s flew to their airborne tanker refueling rendezvous in groups, called “cells” of three aircraft, each cell twenty miles behind the other. The first cell arrived early for the rendezvous and then inexplicably did a circling turn to burn up time, a turn that brought their planes head on into the cell behind them. Two of the B-52s collided, killing eight of the twelve crewmembers, including the brigadier general who was in overall command of the mission. To add to the problems, fewer than half of the B-52s’ bombs hit in the target area, and those caused no Viet Cong casualties and no damage. The mission was later charitably descried as “ineffective.”

Thank you for a great site. I have been able to find a few friend that I have not heard from since Nam. I was with Charlie Co. 2nd\35th 25th 1967. I was R.T.O. for Lt. Rutledge and later for Capt. Jim Lanning. March 12, and 21th 1967 were two days that stand out in my mind as two days of intense fire fights in the Central Highlands, Boys became Men. Many Lost their lives We had the best leadership Capt. Rick and James Lanning who came in and took over the Co All whom served with Charlie Co and the entire 35th regiment may God richly Bless you I am proud to be a Cacti

I was with A Co. 2/12, 1st. Cav. I was in the Que Son valley with the Cav until we left the last week Jan. 1968. We had been at Lz Ross since the 1st. week of Oct. 1967. I just found out recently that the 1/35 was who replaced us when we moved North to Camp Evans, just south of Quan Tri. What was it like for the 1/35th after we left. I have heard that it was just as big a hell valley after we left as it was while we were there. Be interested in hearing from people who were there.

Responding to David Yates (below): The 35th Inf Reg was part of the 25th Inf Div; the 25th patch is a (red) Taro Leaf with a lightning bolt on the leaf - the Taro Leaf does resemble a strawberry - hence in the 60's it became known as the electric strawberry! Jan Scruggs referred to the 25th as the Electric Strawberry Division when we were placing a wreath at the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial in DC on Memorial Day a few years ago - C Span covered it.

Hi Guys, Received the following from Gary Dittmer, A 1/35. Makes you proud to be a Cacti and I wanted share. "I attended the funeral for SGM Carley, with full military honors, at Arlington Cemetery today. I met his wife and his son, Andre, who resembles his father in appearance and disposition. It was a very moving ceremony; I learned that the SGM also served in the Third Infantry, and he would have been proud of how they performed today. His body was carried in a horse drawn caisson to the grave site, which is in view of the damaged portion of the Pentagon. I talked with Col. Taylor who was also there. Col. Taylor is quite a gentleman, who said he will attend every 35th Inf. reunion until he kicks the bucket!"

President’s Update Hello Brethren Cacti, I sincerely hope the New Year is off to a safe and prosperous start for you all. Judging by the various emails I have seen it appears most of you have received your Newsletter by now. If not, and if you do not receive it in a week or so—do not call a fire mission on your local post office but rather email Ben Youmans and he will send you one via regular mail. As stated before, we use bulk delivery because of the beaucoup savings but it can result in inconsistent delivery. The Newsletter is great ain’t it? Very nice coverage of the reunion, Ben worked overtime on the pictures. Ben tells me he has been deluged with the dues coming in, Brava! To such an extent that his cats have been neglected while he feverishly processes them. To those who have not yet forwarded the bucks, please, please do so. A modest twenty dollars will help guarantee that the Cacti, and your proud part in its history, will be forever perpetuated. I also note several new additions to our Timeline, another positive! Dave Fogg, Jim Hall, Jim Anderson, and others have been inputting at a feverish pace. All the while looked after by our indefatigable web master-deluxe Dave Muxo. Thanks to all and keep it up. It is our history, no one knows it better and when we are gone, it goes with us. Therefore we need to record it NOW. You do not need a great historical insight to contribute an entry, “Do you remember the night Lt. Xxxx fell in the creek?” will work just fine. In an above post I mentioned Kahn Carley, First Sergeant of my company, recently passed away. I received an email yesterday from his son Andre who said the family was “overwhelmed” by the kind words expressed in numerous emails. Colonel Wm Taylor, who commanded 1/35 during much of Kahn’s tenure, has graciously agreed to attend the funeral as our official representative, Ben has sent a donation to the American Cancer Society on behalf of the Association, the family was sent a Cacti crest and commemorative coin. I want to thank everyone for all their efforts; this in one area where I feel we excel in. Henry Templin was one of those who sent a very lovely email to the family in which he stated his fond recollections of Top and also his regrets at not attempting to talk to Kahn when he was still with us. Guys, there it is in a nutshell. We may have once been rough/tough Grunts but no one lives forever. We must seek-out each other’s fellowship NOW not later. At the end of this month, the Association Officers will be meeting in Tampa to plan the future. For those like me from a northern clime—it will be quite a sacrifice to go to Florida in January but duty calls and all that. Believe it or not, between the war stories, cigars, and libations—a lot of good works get done. High on the meeting’s agenda will be how to find more former Cacti. I want to take a minute to describe how just one dedicated soul can make a huge contribution. Jim Hall had a roster from his era with about 115 names with SS numbers. Jim Cooke magnanimously paid for the SS searches that yielded very accurate addresses. Jim H than sent out New Guy letters to each and every one. He has been finding guys so fast that I have lost count but he has gotten back at least 30 positive replies—many of whom have already joined the Association. Thus one man has taken his passion and multiplied x 30—and probably well beyond that as these new guys will remember even more names. And the probable main reason for such success was that Jim was someone from their COMPANY AND THEIR ERA that they could relate to. Between the write-for-your-Orders project and already existing documentation, we have accumulated hundreds of names for all Cacti companies. What we need are a few guys like Jim H from each company and era to mount similar campaigns. We can supply the names, some of the addresses, and details on execution but YOU must supply the passion. How about it guys? Do you remember that warm feeling when we “found” you, or vice-versa? Don’t you wish to see that feeling reciprocated? Please get in touch if you want to be involved in such a noble effort. So, let us press onward—Seattle will be here before we know it. I am very pleased with our direction: recording history, finding guys, web site, reunion planning, clerical expertise, et. al. Oh, we have some tweaking to do, but overall, a damn smooth-running outfit, most affirmed! Just remember, the Association belongs to you all, we Officers are only the keepers of the flame, thus we need input from each and every one of you. Cacti Forever (and ever) Dick

Hello All, I am saddened to relay that the 4th lost one of their best the day before Christmas. CSM Kahn Carley Jr. lost a fight with cancer at age 70. Kahn was 1st Sgt with A, 1/35 from 11/67 to 11/68. A VERY large Black man with a booming voice, incandescent smile, and a pipe usually lodged firmly in his mouth. For those with an historical bent; LZ Vera, hard by Highway 19 west of Duc Co, was named after Kahn's wife. At that time he had spent more time in the field than any other 1st Sgt in the 4th. There was no "Field First" and another in the rear for admin---Kahn was the real deal and did it all and damn well! He will be honorably buried in Arlington on Jan. 8. To borrow a phrase from Jimmy Breslin: "He was a credit to his race--the human race." RIP Top, the Lord is getting one hell of a First Shirt! Dick Arnold President, 35th Infantry (Cacti) Association.

Indicates the SRP concept began 25 July '68 for the 3rd Bde, not sure if the 1st and 2nd Bde's also began the SRP's at the same time. 1038 hours (C) From the Bde OIC TOC to the Bn TOC: Need to know how many SRP team members have been killed since the SRP concept was first employed, Bde informed 6 men have been KIA. 1131 hours (C) In reference to item 42 passed to Bde that we have had 6 KIA's since the SRP concept started 25 July 68 from the S-3.

Hi all Cacti, This is Christmas eve 2001. I remember Christmas day 1967 with Charlie Compamy. Jim previously mentioned it in his note. I was there that day. It was a cold damp and dreary day. We had spent Christmas eve on another hill somewhere a few miles from where we set up Christmas morning. We humped from there to this new location and set up a perimeter. I don't know about the rest of the guys, but I didn't have any Christmas spirit in me. It was just another day in the Nam. We hacked down all the bushes in front of out positions and dug foxholes. I don't remember the Christmas dinner. Later on Lt. Seingo setup about 20 meters behind my position to call in Def Con's. I had went to the next position on my left to visit some squad members. Mortar rounds were being called in to the perspective coordinates. I heard the whistle of the last one which came in, and we all hit the dirt. When you hear the whistle you know it is coming in right on top of you or will be very close. The round landed about 50 or 60 feet behind us onto Lt Seingo his RTO Sp4 Jeter and PFC McClerg, also wounding the others near by. This accident put even more of a dampner on all our spirits that day. God Bless everyone this season and may each of our spirits be full of joy.

LZ SUE (BS 567877) was one of those crappy little places where we operated on the corner of four map sheets. The 2/35th had just gotten into the area. Delta and Recon had CA’ed into the LZ to set up the base on the 20th of December. On the 25th, Charlie Company was off to the east of the hills at 586882 and Bravo was south at 539825. Alpha Company was off somewhere, opcon to someone; I haven’t found out who yet. We were all located on three different map sheets. It was supposed to be the Christmas truce. Ha! Like those ever meant anything except we were supposed to have shorter patrols. On the 24th Bravo had 13 enemy KIA and Charlie had one. The dinks were throwing rocks at the perimeter of Bravo on the night of the 24th trying to draw fire and pinpoint positions. On the Christmas day, Charlie Company was doing what it was supposed to do. Sending out short sweeps just to make sure. Things were kind of quiet. By 1700H, everyone was back in the perimeter and it was time to enjoy Christmas. At 1922H, defcons were called in. One short round, later determined to be defective, landed inside the perimeter of Charlie Co. Lt. Ronald J. Siengo, from C Co, Sp4 Dan Jeter and Pfc. Charles McClerg, with the 2/9th Arty, were KIA. Charlie Company also lost 13 other men that night who were WIA; John Wallace, Raymond Rivera, George Rollins, Wilber Gillespi, Thomas O’Conner, Cluris Spivey, Kenneth Westfall, James Boykin, Brooks Woolcok, Noble Smith, Walter Powell, Leland Edelen, and Ted Deviak. I did not know any of these fine men. But every Christmas my thoughts come back to them. I hope the wounded went on to lives filled with joy. I say a prayer for the family of those who did not return from this day. “Friendly fire” has always been a tragedy of war, but knowing that doesn’t make it feel better. Jim Anderson Bravo 2/35 67-68

Fellow Cacti: Just another reminder about computer viruses. There are several new ones going around. DON'T OPEN ANY ATTACHMENT ENDING IN .EXE, .PIC, etc. It is also dangerous to open a .DOC attachment unless you know it is coming, and who from. I personally don't open any attachment exept .JPG and .BMP. If you receive an attachment other than those, write to the person who sent it to confirm. Chances are they won't know anything about it. I received an attachment the other day called "christmas.exe" and of course deleted it right away. Today I found out that it is a particularly nasty virus. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Hi All, I haven't posted for a couple of weeks and my last one is kind of buried by all the new postings now. Many of you are aware that we are conducting a drive to try and get all our Vietnam era guys to obtain copies of their Vietnam orders. We hope to use these orders to help identify additional old Cacti members. I will be most happy to walk you through the simple procedure for filling out the form to obtain these orders. (There will be no cost to you in obtaining these.) The orders themselves will come to you, all we ask is that you make us a copy of any order that mentions other 1/35th or 2/35th members so that we might attempt to locate them. The Association is promoting this in order to try and help all you guys to find the old buddies that you have always wanted to locate. If you already have old orders laying around we would be happy to have these too. I can be e-mailed at the address above or write me at 1335 N. Broad St./ Woodbury, NJ 08096 Thanks for your help. Doc

I recieved this email from Bruce Suttles wife regarding the funeral for Ramon Frescas. This is the true CACTI spirit that is forever in all who served in the 35th Infantry Regiment. Greetings, Ben. This is Bruce's wife, Julene. Bruce has to work late tonight so he asked me to write to you to finish the saga of CPL Frescas' return home. Yesterday, as you know, Bruce did what he could to put more word out about the funeral and burial. Also, we bought a nice (but inexpensive) photograph/keepsake box, black with a silver-colored metal picture frame top just the right size to contain the hat and insignia you sent here. To place in the picture frame, I printed out a card with Ramon's "statistics" and the words "Remembered by the 35th Infantry Regiment Association". I am sending in a separate e-mail some PC camera photos of the box and contents. The camera is new to us, so if the photos don't come through to you properly, let us know and we'll try again. In person, the box is really quite elegant-looking and I think you would have approved. This morning we attended the funeral and burial and it was just wonderful! The attendees were 8 or 10 of Ramon's relatives and many veterans and active-duty soldiers, young and older. We figure that about 150 people altogether showed up at the funeral, or the burial, or both. The Chaplain did an outstanding job of telling about the circumstances of the deaths of Ramon and virtually all of his Company, the importance of recognizing such events even at this late date, and the importance especially to the young people of recognizing and remembering out true heroes. It was a very touching and heartwarming and healing experience. The service lasted about 45 minutes. At the Ft. Bliss National Cemetery the Army had arranged for military honors, three-gun salute, bugler playing taps, and all, with perhaps 25 young soldiers taking part. Bruce made your presentation to Ramon's brother, now 80 years old, after the flag ceremony along with several other presentations including a very touching tribute by the Order of the Purple Heart who had an Honor Guard there. Also the local VFW had a large contingent present. Among others in attendance were quite a few active duty soldiers and several people who appeared to be civilians. And at least 4 TV cameras were there taping -- probably television stations. The history we learned today was amazing -- an incredible battle with so few survivors that local Korean farmers ended up burying the dead -- 200 or more Americans -- in the field where they lay. And they remained there until "rediscovered" in 1999. Since then they've been in the process of being identified and returned home. "Our" Ramon was 20 years old and very handsome with a melt-your-heart smile when he was killed in battle 51 years ago, and like the rest in his Company was listed as "missing in action" until now... I didn't realize until this morning how very important it was to recognize an "ordinary" soldier like that even after half a century. Ramon had been fine all these years, but the others -- the remaining family members, the old and very old veterans, and the very young active-duty soldiers -- all needed this confirmation of being cherished, and needed, and never forgotten... We were able to take a few photos there, and have, so far, one small article which appeared in the El Paso Times newspaper on Thursday, and a program from the funeral today all of which Bruce will mail to you in a couple days. We'll wait to see if any more appears in the paper this weekend... Wishing you many blessings... Julene

The Cacti will be represented at El Paso for the funeral of Ramon Frescas. Bruce Suttles a Cacti who served in Vietnam with the 2/35th lives there and will be at the ceremony and has also passed the word to the Vet community out there. We sent a Cacti hat, 2 Cacti Crests and a CIB for Ramon. It will be presented by Bruce. I will post the flyer that Bruce made on the bulletin board. Cacti Forever..

A great sadness is with many of us at this time. The passing of Tom Mahoney is a tremendous hurt that is shared by all. I am glad I had the chance to meet him at several reunions. He definitely impressed me as a Gentleman and someone who do whatever he could for you. I am proud to call him Cacti Brother. Tom I know you are up there looking down and remember as long as we remember you then you are not truly gone. A big Hand Salute to you Brother. A toast to you my friend-- Here's to us--and those like us---damn few left. TAPS will be played for you and all our departed Cacti Brothers in Seattle. We will not forget.

A few hours ago I received a phone call from Terry Savely who told me that Tom Maloney passed away. I spent ten months out in the field with Tom and he was the best squad leader in the 3rd platoon during that time. Tom was the only squad leader I knew that would rather walk point himself than have one of his men do it. That's the type of guy he was. When the pressure was on you could always count on Tom being there. Bravo Co. lost a damn good solder today and a good man and we all loved him. I will miss him.

Very good news for all Cati. On our sister site "A Walk With the 35th" thanks to some great efforts by Jim Anderson there is in place a "roster" of all the guys that the Association "thinks" it knows the location for. It could be that that buddy you'd like to find is already found. To view this information just click on the "A walk With the 35th" symbol on the beginning page of this web site. Scroll to the bottom and click on "Main Index" Scroll down and click on "Current Rosters" This will give you information on how to use this section. There is, I believe, over 2000 names of Cacti there from WWII through Vietnam. Don't forget to appreciate the efforts of Ben Youman's who has agreed to take on even more of a work load to help you find those buddies. Good luck and good hunting.

Fellow Cacti: Over the last month we have received a flood of TimeLine submissions. Due to a death in the family, I have gotten a little behind, but rest assured, all entries will be appearing within the next week. Check the "What's New" page to see if the ones you submitted are there. If not, contact me or resubmit. Thanks for your patience. PS: New timeline entries will pop up in a new window from now on. That is because we have so many in 1968 that all would not fit on one page anymore. Keep them coming!

During the last reunion I participated in a project by Jim,Doc,Hall to get copies of orders from the Vietnam war. Last week I got a big thick envelope from the National Personnel Records Center. Inside were a dozen or so old orders from basic, AIT and Nam. While going through them I spotted names that I had forgotten for over 30 years. I know that the purpose of this project was to find other cacti but it also has helped me in ways that I can't explain here. If any of you guys out there haven't participated in this project I would reccommend it highly. Thanks to everone who got this program going.

Hello to all! Just a quick note to let everyone know that I've added a couple new sections to the "Walk With the 35th" site. First, a section on our History. eginning with the first battle on the Arizona border and up through Guadalcanal. I hope to finish WWII soon and get on to posting information on Korea and, of course, more on Vietnam. The second section is in the MAPS section. A Timeline for the 2/35th with FSB and LZ grids, and instructions on how to order Maps from USGS. If some of you 1/35th guys could get me more info, I will be happy to get it online too. We were all there together! Enjoy.

Just a quick note (maybe) to let everyone know what a WONDERFUL time my wife (Marci) and I had In Kansas City. Nothing I can say here, will convey the absolute gratitude we feel to you folks who set up this and other reunions. It's such a great experience to be around guys like you, just as it was 30 plus years ago. Thanks for keeping me alive then and adding to my life now. Marci & I do so look forward to next year in Seattle. Our only regret is that we feel we have not contributed to the sharing in some of the work. Just call on me (us), and we'll be more than happy to help. Finally, let me say a few words for all of us. Mike Dolan, a great Irishman (is there any other kind?) and also a member of our fine Association has been working as a volunteer firefighter at "groung zero" in Manhattan for such a long time now. Away from his family, looking death in the eye, and only there to help those who are less fortunate. GOD BLESS HIM AND OTHER LIKE HIM. Fellow Cacti: I've received several inquiries about downloading images from the last reunion. Since they are displayed in a slideshow format, they cannot be downloaded directly. However, soon our site will be on a new, larger, server, and the photos will be available both in the slideshow and in a downloadable form. I will add a link above the slideshow indicating where the downloadable images are. If anyone has contributed photos, and does not want them to be provided in downloadable format, please let me know. Now, another topic. The appearance of the "nimda" virus has many people worried. My best recommendation is that everyone invest in a good virus protection program, for example from Norton or McCaffey. "Nimda" is not dangerous to your computer, however, it spreads easily and is a serious problem. DO NOT click on any attachment to an email unless you know it is coming and you know who it is from. Check with the sender if you receive any attachments which have the ".exe" or ".doc" extensions. Practice safe computing! GOD BLESS AMERICA and her fighting men and women.

Like Dick Arnold (see below) I was shocked by what happened yesterday. We will always have difficulty dealing with an enemy that doesn't value human life because it's so foreign to our Culture. We have fought a similar enemy in our Asian Wars of the last Century. We will have to soundly defeat this new enemy - to the roots of their organization, including their financial backers, and the countries that support them. We should also move with hyperspeed to develop an alternative to oil - cut off their cash flow. I hope our Military is ready for the call: "Saddle Up"! God Bless America!

Hello All, Like most Americans, I was mesmerized and galvanized by yesterday's tragedies. It appears we are headed for the greatest number of deaths in one day since Antietam. In the midsts of it all though, it also appears the unique American ability to pull together as one united peoples is strongly intact. Was it not a beautiful sight to see the Congressmen/Congressladies sing "God Bless America?" As veterans, most of us also took special umbrage at the despicable cowardliness of it all and also clearly understood the meaning of targeting the Pentagon. My only response I could think of was to call home and tell Joanie to put my Flag out that I generally reserve for weekends and holidays. If any good at all can come from this it perhaps will be a heightened sense that there is good and evil, darkness and light, friends and enemies in this crazy world. As President Bush eloquently pointed-out, we were targeted because America STILL shines as a beacon for individual freedoms and the greatest opportunity for the common man. Hopefully, we may now have a counter-weight to misguided geopolitical considerations and favored-nations trading pacts, Our prayers are with our Country and with our leaders to find a meaningful, but measured response. And of course, to the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who may go in harm's way to deliver that response. God Bless America, Dick

VIRUS ALERT: Be aware that there are several email viruses circulating, at least one among Cacti. Don't open any attached Word document, or run any attached exe unless you know it is coming and who it is coming from. Check with the sender if you are unsure. I just received an exe from Wiley Dodd, and he didn't know that it had been sent. These things spread quickly because they come from people you know, so always check anyway.

Fellow Cacti: I just read a disturbing article in the paper. Seems someone defaced the KC Vietnam Vets memorial on Wednesday. I guess there are still people out there who don't understand, after all this time. It's still up to us to remember and honor our fallen brothers. I have never been so proud as when I stood with all of you who attended the reunion for our group pictures. We went into battle as strangers, and came back brothers. Only we will ever understand that.

I had a great time in KC! Thanks to all the Cacti brothers (and sisters) that I had the opportunity to meet. It was very special for me to meet Phillippe Saunier (FO, B Co, 2/35, '66) after all these years. He's one of those special guys that's always there when you need him (especially when you could really use a well-placed H.E. round!) Thanks to all the past and present officers of the Association who work tirelessly on our behalf. A big thanks to "Doc" Hall for getting me to send off for my orders, something that I had not been able to do on my own! Also a big "pat on the back" to "Andy" Jim Anderson for providing all the unit history books. And a special thanks to the active duty Cacti, you made us all very proud! It was great to see so many of our brothers from Korea and of course those from WWII. I hope to see everyone again next year. - John

Well, our 3rd Reunion is now history but will remain in the minds of those who attended for a long time. It was great to see so many Cacti and their families come together for a weekend of friendship, camaraderie and remembrance. The Esprit' d Corps lives on in all Cacti from Orin Love, Anti-Tank Company, 1944-46 to PFC Scott Bennetch A 2/35th presently on Active Duty at Schofield Barracks and Enlisted Man of the Quarter. 1944-2001 the years covered by the 275 Cacti and Families. Wow. I would like to thank some people who represent the Cacti Spirit, people who gave of themselves at this reunion unselfishly. Joe Nemeth, taking orders for the really cool glasses and mugs with the Cacti and Unit logos on them, a great surprise. Richard & Nina Brouillette who had the display of Gear and Equipment on display so the families could see what we wore and carried.Charlie Marshall, our Chaplain who provides us with inspiration. All the Heavy Mortar Company men, 20 strong, who for many were seeing each other for the first time since Korea, 50 years ago. Our strac Color Guard, Jack Anderson, Jim Cooke, Jack Cuthrell, Don Blankin, Pete Birrow, Wiley Dodd, Joe Henderson, Tom Gragg & Roger Surprenant. Sean Haefli with his rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" brought tears to my eyes and filled my heart with pride. LTC Burt Thompson CO 2/35th with his inspiring speech, CSM Charlie Raper 2/35th a Soldier's Soldier. SGT Joshua Weisensel, HHC 2/35th,NCO of the Year, that says to me with men like this wearing the uniform today we can feel proud.Roger Stephens for being a Cacti good Samaritan. Fellow Cacti, It is now two weeks until the start of the 2001 Cacti Reunion at Kansas City.We are expecting a large turnout; but there is plenty of room for more. So, to you troops out there procrastinating, what in the name of General Westmoreland are you waiting-on? You say you can't be there all four days? Fine, be there when you can. Money is a bit tight? Fine, there are plenty of cheaper hotels in the area, and/or we also have funds available for such contingentcies. You might ran into the prick that use to give you the blues? Not to worry, he is most likely now fat, toothless, with an ugly wife to boot. So come laugh at him for a change. Bottom line, please get off your rump; get in the car, the train, the plane, throw mamasan off the Berreta, tell babysan to hitch-up the water buffalo-------BUT PLEASE BRING YOURSELF TO KANSAS CITY BECAUSE YOU DESERVE IT!!!! Does anyone remember a Lieutenant in A, 2/35, we called "Mr Peepers?" (Circa late '67.) I believe he was from Arkansas, and he always referred to the Pacific as a "Creek!" He wore fairly thick-lensed eye-glasses. I left A Co in Aug or Sep, '67, so he must've gotten in-country around Jun or Jul. If it rings a bell, let me know!

A little more claiification on posting your slides to a web site, or having them "burnt" to a CD, at the reunion: Even though I said they were 35mm, most of us took "Instamatic" camera slides (110 film) in the bush. 99% of the time, the developer back then mounted them in 35mm slide holders! If your slides measure 2" x 2", I can digitize them! Just let me know you will be bringing them, so I can schedule my time. See you @ LZ KC!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello fellow Cacti. Dave Muxo our webmaster has done an excellent job on the site and I hope you all enjoy it. The cost of having this site and the Cacti Magazine that is mailed out are both funded by the generous Cacti who pay Member Dues. If you enjoy the website and want to continue to have it available please consider joining the Association and paying your Membership dues. The 35th Infantry Regiment (Cacti) Association is not a part of either the 25th or 4th Infantry Division Associations. Your membership in either of those organizations does not carry over to the 35th Cacti. If you do not have a Cacti Membership Card then you are not an Association Member. So please consider joining. Thank You.

Hello fellow Cacti! Just a note to let you know that over the last couple of weeks we have added many names to our Cacti rosters. Everyone please check your entries there (in the roster for your company, all by last name, and all by date) for accuracy. If you find a problem, or just want to make a change, let me know. We have also redesigned the Cacti PX, so take a look. We have many more photos of our group's return to Vietnam which we will be posting, but they will have to wait a few weeks for our new web server, because we've almost run out of space on the present one. So check back often, because there's always something new!

Hell-o to all. I haven't visited the Cacti webpages in quite some time...congratulations on the "new look", it's very nice and well done. My friend and partner Joe Galloway and I have two websites with photos of the Ia Drang campaign in '65 using the link included and http://www.weweresoldiers.net. Joe co-authored, "We Were Soldiers Once...and Young". It's now being made into a movie starring Mel Gibson. Joe and Gen. Hal Moore sold the rights to Randall Wallace who did Braveheart because of his commitment to tell the story as written, and Joe tells me that this time, they are going to get the story of Vietnam from the soldiers point of view..correct! About time.

Fellow Cacti: Those of you who have visited our chat room have noticed that it doesn't always work. The chat host company, NBCi, is gradually withdrawing their support from many of their services. Although they have not announced termination of the chat rooms, we have seen a drop in its availability. We will be changing chat room providers as soon as we can find another one.

Hello All, Dick Arnold, Editor of Cacti Newsletter. I wanted to thank everyone who has both sent me emails and left messages here saying how much they enjoyed the recent issue. Newsletter Publisher Ben Youmans and I always try to include something that will appeal to all ranks and persuasions. The articles on the various battles seem to be particularly enjoyed. The problem is guys, regardless how much research is done--nothing beats first-hand reports from those who were "there". Guys, it is your heritage--when we are all gone no one will be able to say what really happened. So pleasce consider submitting tidbits for inclusion--this also includes the "War Stories" section--we all have a tale or two to tell. Thanks again and hope to see you all in KC! Cacti Forever, Dick

June 26 & I just received my Cacti Newsletter - Great Issue! Thanks to all who contributed - especially those who wrote of our battle(1/35) on 2/9/68 near Hoi An - SW of Danang. I was wounded by one of those 105 short rounds late in the day - Jim Brennan who was standing next to me was killed (He had 13 days left in country!). One thing no one mentioned were the arc lights on 2/8/68 - We were on a hill overlooking the area that night and they came at about 10pm, 2am, and 4 am as I remember. Awesome sight - first you see the flash, next the sound of the B-52s, followed by the explosions and the near earthquake that follows. Happy Fourth of July - Show your colors proudly!!

The last of the After Action Reports for the 2/35th are now posted on the "A Walk With the 35th" site. From May, 1970, the Cambodia invasion, to Operation Putnam Paragon, which completed for us on 12 Oct 1970. Our thanks to Richard Cazeault for providing so much information from the 1970's era. Caz deserves a great deal of credit. Salute!

We are trying to get the word out about our project and thought perhaps you might be able to help us. Vietnam veterans . . . WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!! Have you ever spent time in a veteran's hospital? This not-for-profit group works to lessen the bleakness that permeates most Veterans Health Administration hospitals. Check out the Kitchen Table Gang Trust at http://taliaferro.net/veterans Many veterans have deemed our efforts worthy of support and we hope you will too. Hand salute!

One of your officers, the late Cpt Ralph B. Walker was my classmate at West Point (Class '63). He was a great guy, a gung-ho Texan and a really mean, tough son of a gun. Everyone respected him and the men of the 35th Infantry should be proud to count him as one of their own. Keep up your web site and make it grow more each year. This is definitely a professional-looking presentation. Good luck to all of you and God bless!

Ron, I agree 100% that we all need to stand up and be counted. I have started wearing the hat pin for my Vietnam Service Medal on my suit lapel. When anyone asks what it is, I say I wear it in memory of my friends who died defending South Vietnam from Communism. I invite all Cacti to consider doing the same where you feel it is appropriate. Let's remember those who gave all in an honorable cause.

While browsing at a book store I came across this book "Shrapnel In The Heart." The cover of the book had the Vietnam Wall in the background and the author posted a picture of a soldier with a dog and also this was written: To those men of D Company 1st Bn 35th Inf. 4th Div. who were lost in the battle of Chu Pa Mountain January 21-22-23, 1969, Because of their bravery I am here today and it was signed by SSG Lavender.
