Cacti 35th Infantry Guest Book
February 2002 - May 2003

I RECENTLY ACQUIRED TWO PIECES OF 35TH INFANTRY (CACTI)HEAVY CHINAWARE WITH THE INSIGNIA EMBOSSED ON THE EDGE. THEY WERE MADE BY NORITAKE(NIPPON)AND,I BELIEVE THEY DATE BACK TO THE 1920S. DOES ANYONE HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF SUCH DINNERWARE? ALSO, IS THERE A 35TH INFANTRY MUSEUM ANYWHERE THAT I CAN CONTACT? ELIZABETH

Hello all, I have just been browsing to try and find my dear brother-in-law's name in here; I hate to admit it but I do not know his regiment.... I do know, however, that he has participated in the reunions and benefited greatly from the development of this organization.....It means so much to him.. When I met him I was only 15 or so....a PIA as he was dating my big sissy and I was a tag-a-long, with a life-long "crush" on him. I was even sent as a chaperone (haha) on a visit to Ft. Campbell...not long before he was discharged. I am sure he was just THRILLED TO SEE THE PEST: ME!!! As I matured a bit :), John and I discussed VietNam, and in my naivite' (I cannot spell), and as a hippie in the early seventies, I clearly did not understand when he told me WE MUST REMEMBER....as, I, a silly idealist...wanted to "forget" WAR...as if, if I did, Wars would be know more. Gee, am I embarrassed for that!!! Today, with his patient and gentle responses of all the questions I have, the issue of REMEMBERING ALL WHO HAVE SERVED OUR COUNTRY ....IN ANY WAR AT ANYTIME is an understood concept for me! How silly I was! Thanks to all of you for serving our country, and all the sacrifices all of you made.....I so admire ALL of you. Thanks, Carole

My cousin was PVT first Class Harrison B. Shauger C Co,2nd BN, 35th INF RGT, 4 INF DIV. He went to Viet Nam 9/9/68 he lost his life on 9/30/68. He was more like a brother to me than a cousin, his parents passed away when he was very young and he spent a lot of time at our home with us. I was just 2 years younger than Harrison and we were very close. When he went into the Army no matter where he was I wrote to him all the time. He even had me writing to his friends in the military. I graduated High School in June of "68, I had previously written to him telling him I was thinking of joining the Army after graduation He was not happy since that was not a time in history he wanted his younger cousin in the military. When he came home on leave and was with us, I used to make him Pancakes for breakfast, well I believe the entire U.S. Army knew how bad my pancakes were. Needless to say I never enlisted I am happily married 32 years to a wonderful man, who I think Harrison would have loved, and had two great children. Oh by the way although I don't like to cook, my husband does most of that, I have learned to make the best pancakes. Even after all these years I think of Harrison, have all the letters he ever wrote and he is always in my heart. I have two very special angels in Heaven since I lost my Daughter at the age of twelve to cancer, and I know he is taking care of her just like he did me. And I will see them both again some day because I know God has a plan for me just like he did for both of them. So I will close by saying God Bless America and all who gave thier hearts and some thier lives to protect our country and to all who are doing the same today and all who will in the years to come. Bless all of you, Carol

“NINER-NINER, NINER-NINER” Calling all Bravo 2/35 Cacti to our Third Annual Luncheon. If you have not attended our luncheon in the past, then the last time you ate lunch with us as a Bravo guy, you needed a P-38! This year in Buffalo, we have a great location to offer you on the shores of Lake Erie. Root Five Waterfront Restaurant, Hamburg New York is located on Route 5, a short distance from the Adams Mark Hotel. This laid-back location has a beautiful view of one of the five Great Lakes. Friday, July 25th at 1pm an outdoor patio has been reserved for our group so that we can enjoy the beautiful sunny afternoon. Take a leisurely look at their web-site (www.rootfive.com) and see what we mean! Bravo 2/35 has a great membership in the 35th Infantry Regiment Association, all the way back to Korea and WWII. We all experienced the same things but on different soil; finally, we can all experience something together! Last year we had Bravo dudes from LZ 10 Alfa through Duc Lap and all the way to Cambodia. Come on you guys, we want you at “The Root!” Please invite your Bravo-ette and your other guests. Emery Swan, General Manager (a Vietnam Vet also), has given us a special deal for our luncheon: a full buffet from salad to top round, baked chicken, vegetables, rigatoni, potatoes, etc. Top this off with dessert, coffee or tea. Whoops, I forgot one thing: Emery is starting us off with our first drink for free! All this for $19 per person! Please make your reservations as early as possible so we can guarantee an accurate head-count for the restaurant. You can do this by sending a check made out to “ROOT FIVE WATERFRONT RESTAURANT” at the above stated price, per person. The cut-off date for receipt of your check will be July 21, 2003. The mailing address is: P. J. Birrow 37 Flint Rd. Tyngsboro, Ma 01879 Should you get creative and send it with your reunion registration, please use a separate check for our Bravo luncheon. One last detail: The 2nd/35th deuce & a-half’s are still in the motor pool at Schoefield Barracks so we will need to set up a convoy for the ride down Route 5. If you are driving to Buffalo and you are willing to assist in this troop movement, please let me know. Come join us for a great afternoon with some great people. Hi Guys. A bunch of us were talking today about a new Cacti Project (and tradition). Several of us are going to celebrate this Memorial Day by paying a visit to one or more grave sites of our KIA Brothers. I encourage any of you who live anywhere near a departed Brother to take the time to remember and show your respect for them. We are currently putting together a data base of grave site locations for our Vietnam KIA's. We have approximately 150 such locations to go along with the nearly 250 photo's that we have collected. If you know of a grave site location or can contribute a photo of one of our KIA's please contact me. Unfortuantely our data base won't be ready for this year's Memorial Day but by next year we should have all of this information posted on the site. In the meantime if you would like to know if we have information on your old buddy please feel free to write at my e-mail address below. Have a great holiday and please remember our Brothers who are not able to be with us. Doc

Fellow Cacti: Our KIA page is now fully operational for all wars. As yet we have not added anyone for Nogales or WWII. We have, however, added over 800 Korean War KIAs, about 115 of them down to the company level. We need your help to identify the companies of the rest of our fallen brothers. If you have information or corrections, please send them to me or Jim Anderson. We are also actively asking for Timeline entries from the Korean War and WWII. Please help us remember our heritage and our fallen heroes.

Fellow Cacti: Our main menu has changed. I have combined our Vietnam War and Korean War menus into a new one called "Regiment". All of our KIAs, from 1918 to 1970 are now on one KIA index page. All roster entries from Cacti from all wars are on one Roster page, and soon all Timeline entries from all wars will be on one Timeline index page.

Former member of Able Company in Korea 1950-1951 under the command of Sidney B. Berry, the best commander in the entire U.S. Army. There are very few people I would go through hell with and he is one of them...as a matter of fact we already did that scene. I was in the Third Platoon with Lt. Charles Walz (now deceased)as my Platoon Leader and Sgt Pete Benoit as my Squad Leader. My foxhole buddy was Bernard C. Neel now living in Florida. Bernie and his wife Carol were in the Baltimore area in November of 2001 and me and my wife Sandi were able to spend a few hours together after more than fifty years. I am proud to have served with such outstanding people and proud to have been a Cacti. I was wounded in March of 1950 and evacuated back to Japan and then Back to the United States. After 25 years of active duty I retired from the military in 1974.

One of the storylines is that of a Montagnard youth who came from Cambodia about 9 months ago. I am looking for photographs of the Montagnards to help compliment the youth's reflection on the situation of his people. here are a few of my thoughts and reflections about my brother phil'pete'pederson,D 1/35th.67-68.we served our entire year together with the exception of minor inconveniences like malaria.dysentary and other misc. details that took each one of us out of the field for 'tete'time..only to willingly desire to come back and be with our true brothers in the field vs. the rear echelon garbage.pete was a warrior all the way to the very end with only one lung left with just a tiny straw size opening allowing him to struggle for the next breath and still having the whereabouts to tell me from the hospital bed to take another picture of him, this time when i did he shot me the middle finger and smiled that beautiful smile of his..that is the vision i am holding on to now as i remember him.i had the privilege of having pete visit here at my home in melbourne on 3 different occasions as he travelled from so. dakota to enjoy golf games, visits to the space center and various pubs and such.he met many of my friends and my softball team and my vfw post members and my family..as i informed all of those folks of his medical condition and the ultimate outcome forthcoming some of their comments really sum up pete,in my opinion" he enriched my life" as one friend put it.another said "he is the kind of guy you couldn't help but like right away"a great sense of humor.he could take as well as give when the verbal sparring began.we went out on a party boat fishing and he caught the only fish between barrie me and pete.he was the only one of us that had never fished salt water before.barrie and i had been catching big salt water fish all of our lives and we were going to show him how it was done..ha ha. he showed us up good.i know he is in a better place watching us and i thank God he allowed me to be a part of his life.he is my brother forever and i will see him again.he is the epitome of the cacti spirit.i truly love him as a brother in arms..a true patriot,an american man. miles'surf'sawvel

Guys, I am very saddened to report that Cacti Tony Taschler has passed away. He was on a business trip in St Louis and was found in hotel room; apparently from natural causes. A 1/35th, 1967, damn fine M79 man. He and wife Marci have been at every reunion. Tony was short and friendly, and Irish and liked his beer. He was from Indy here so I will do us all proud, Details pending. Marci had a neighbor call be here at work as "she knew Tony was so proud of his military service." RIP Tony! Guys, we ain't getting any younger; reach out and make that phone call to that old buddy right now!

If you ever served with the 35th Infantry Regiment, either with the 25th Infantry Division or the 4th Infantry Division, you'll want to join this outfit, the 35th Infantry Regiment (Cacti) Association. And if you want to find a buddy you served with a long time ago in a far away place, you definitely want to join this outfit. And if you want to increase your chances that you WILL find one of your buddies that you served with, then make plans to attend our reunion in Buffalo this summer. Our Cacti network is getting BIG and we have really great guys who can help you find that buddy. My first reunion was the Cacti's 2nd in Washington DC, 2000. I wasn't sure what I'd find, if I'd fit in, or if I'd find someone I served with. I didn't but came close and met some really great guys that served in B 2/35 not long after I left Vietnam. In fact, I met CAPT Lindsey who replaced my company commander, CAPT Walker who was KIA after I left. I sat at the banquet with three guys that served with CAPT Lindsey and I felt good just sitting with them and thinking how great it was that they were able to find each other and talk about their time in Vietnam and the guys they served with. I stuck with it and attended the 3rd Cacti Reunion in Kansas City the following year. I had made contact with Philippe Saunier a short time before and he came with his wife Anna. What a great time we had. Last year, I attended in Seattle and there were six of us including SGT Beauchamp, "Doc" DeRosa, Hollie Blankenship, Alan Stelzer, Saunier and me. You can't imagine how much fun we had and it was sooo good for the soul. This year I hope we'll add to our group with CAPT McQuillen, SGTs Whitmier and Norkett, Larry Goodyear and SGT King's wife, Cathy. If you want to be around guys that you looked after and they looked after you, guys you shared care packages from home with, guys you huddled up with to stay warm, guys that pulled you along when you didn't think you could take another step, make plans to attend this year's Cacti Reunion in Buffalo. You'll find infantrymen from retired generals to privates, those from the "Greatest Generation" that served in the Pacific during WWII, those that served in Korea and Vietnam, active duty Cacti and everyone in between including family members. And just maybe, we'll have "peaches and pound cake" for desert, and not a can of "ham 'n limas" in sight! And even if you don't find someone you served with, you'll make new friends for life! If you're Cacti, you're family. Check out the Reunion information on this web site and make plans for Buffalo. You will never regret it.

Richard Anderson C 1/35th George Economous Jr. C 1/35th Robert Fritsche Jr. C 1/35th Robert Grant D 1/35th Jerry Heuer C 1/35th Lauren Huerd D 1/35th Edward Rhode D 1/35th Larry Sloan D 1/35th Steven Smith C 1/35th I led my platoon 2nd C 2/35th thru the battle area two days later enroute to the next peak that would become LZ Virgin. No movie yet made can adequately describe the true battlefield look and feel. Carnage was the name of the ground, bloody bandages, parts of uniforms, boots, equipment, a prc 25 that a B-40 round hit directly, blood and gore covered the ground. Not one bird or insect made a noise, it was as quiet as I can ever recall. Trees shredded by bullets, rockets, artillery and mortars. Smell was overpowering to the nose. We put bandanas and towels over our nose and mouths. Flies covered the gore, strangely silent except for an occasional buzz. Several hastily buried dink bodies in their spider holes head first. Commo wire all around, many bunkers superbly camoflaged and hidden, a true death trap. A kill zone made perfect by professionals. Two US rifle companies overpowered and driven back 200 meters to Mile High. Many heroic acts, men with sucking chest wounds carrying their buds on their shoulders to safety. A trooper with one arm barely attached firing his M-16 and reloading using his knees for support. The Delta CO standing tall moving down the trail with a rifle blazing in each hand, refusing to retreat until all his men were clear. Medics patching the wounding trying to save one life while their own blood drained into the rich earth. Two men face to face one US and one NVA and both not firing but diving to safety on opposite sides of the same log. Men carrying other men to the LZ then returning for more. Never stopping, never caring for their own safety. Screams from both sides as soldiers died from both armies. We stopped our advance to LZ Virgin that day April 17 and in unison said a prayer for the souls of all who departed their human body that day April 15, 1968. We stepped carefully almost afraid to even disturb the blood on the ground as if we would be committing a sacrilege. That night no one slept at all. We only knew that had circumstances been a bit different it could have been C 2/35th instead of C 1/35th as we had been scheduled to relieve them on Mile High around the 10-12th of April. Instead we were licking our wounds and mourning our dead from our bit of hell April 03-07. If our replacements had arrived just a few days sooner we would have been the souls lost on the 15th. I mourn and mourn for my Cacti Brothers lost on that sacred ground. Mile High, a name that no Cacti from Nam will ever forget. Many of my C and D 1/35th brothers still suffer from that day and always will. God have mercy on them and care for them. CactiBen out.

Great web page. I have been searching for my high school buddy - John M. West, KIA March 1967, and I finally found him. John and I got blasted the night before I left for Viet Nam in 1964, by the time I got back, he was in the Army and then gone to VN. I never saw him after that night of revelry. Thanks for keeping his memory alive. If anyone knows any of the circumstances surrounding his death, please forward to me. Welcome Home!!!! Ken

The History Channel is producing a series entitled "Operation Reunion." We are looking for veterans with combat stories who wish to reunite with other veterans or family members of veterans that they shared traumatic experiences with on the battlefield. The stories that we will feature in the program should meet the following criteria: 1. The veterans looking to reunite have not had any recent contact. 2. The veterans must have a very strong, compelling reason for wanting to reunite. Some examples might include wanting to return a personal item belonging to one of the veterans, wanting to bring closure to a combat event that resulted in PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and years of emotional, physical and mental torture, or corroborating a VA benefits claim. 3. The story must include combat, a rescue or any other war type action, taking place anytime from the Bay of Pigs to present day. We need to connect with interested veterans as soon as possible. If you know of a story that fits these criteria, please contact: Kip Bauer Indigo Films 415.460.4873 kbauer@indigofilms.com

It is my very sad duty to inform all Cacti that one of our Brothers, Phil Pederson D 1/35 1967-68, passed away Saturday April 05, 2003 in the afternoon. How ironic that he died on the same date 35 years after his company was involved along with A 1/35 in the first Cacti battles at LZ Mile High in Kontum Province. He resided in Watertown, SD. If any Cacti reading this is close enough to attend services please contact Ben Youmans at this email c23568@gte.net or 800-397-9813 x3711. We do not have any more details at this time. Got this from Lynne Krause today. speaks mucho lots. "We got a letter from Josh today, if you could call it that, written 3/9. They are hearing about the anti-war protests and he was upset. That' s all the letter talked about. He enclosed a poem he and his buddies wrote. He wants us to get it out, let people see how they feel. Any ideas? "WISH YOU WERE HERE" For all the free people that still protest. You're welcome. We protect you and you are protected by the best. Your voice is strong and loud, but who will fight for you? No one standing in your crowd. We are your fathers, brothers, and sons, wearing the boots and carrying guns. We are the ones that leave all we own, to make sure your future is carved in stone. We are the ones who fight and die, We might not be able to save the world, Well, at least we try. We walked the paths to where we are at and we want no choice other than that. so when you rally your group to complain, take a look in the back of your brain. In order for that flag you love to fly wars must be fought and young men must die. We came here to fight for the ones we hold dear. If that's not respected, we would rather stay here. So please stop yelling, put down your signs, and pray for those behind enemy lines. When the conflict is over and all is well, be thankful that we chose to go through hell. Recieved this from Tex Wandke-Dale Franklin Rollins was KIA on 11/13/68 A 1/35th. He was awarded the DSC. The letter is from one of Dale's daughters to her sister. Hand Salute "This is a good letter. Her Father was killed when he was the First Sergeant of the company I was commanding. We were on LZ Vera. I had covered the same area 30 minutes prior. The enemy tried to penetrate the bunker line and he killed three of them before they got him. RDW Dear Melinda: I view the news and I see the protestors, their fanfare, and in full force.I sense their intentions are genuine, albeit, misplaced....Because some here were aware of me being a 'war orphan', I had been invited to attend one of the low-key protests here..big mistake to invite me! I had to set them straight. I would not want any of them to think for a moment that I agreed with any of those lily-livered, pacifying, anti-war protestors. I hope that from now on they will know where I stand. You and I, we know what sacrifices war entails.....most of them could only guess...but for us to stand against our Nation's fight for liberty would put us against what our Dad gave his life for....if you have something you cherish, you'd better well be willing to defend it..or someone will strip it from you, (Dad taught us that, and History verifies it). I could never stand with those protestors and their 'opinions' about this war. Although I am tempted to don the duct tape, or a bucket of ice water.I realize that their ability to voice their opinions are but a part of our democracy, bought and paid for by the blood of the soldiers of yesterday. But if it were not for that blood being shed by those brave soldiers on the battlefield...they would have been silenced and taken over by the Saddam, or Osama types long ago, and they sure would not be able to voice their opinions then. They remind me of the "Little Red Hen"story.no one wanted to do the work, but they all wanted their piece of the loaf. Since these protestors are willing to stand against this current endeavor, maybe they should spend a month with Saddam, and his regime....then learn to appreciate the cost of the liberties, that they are abusing. I hate hearing of the 'die-ins' being staged by these people who have no idea about the truth of things. They should be spending their time rather, sending those hard working troops, or the families of those killed, care packages and notes of support, rather than trying to shoot the wind out of their sails with their senseless babblings, and stupid antics.which cost thousands of dollars in man-power each day to quell. If we do not take care of the 'Saddam' situation now...we will have plenty more 'twin tower' tragedies to contend with in our future. Then these protestors may well be drawing true chalk lines drawn around their corpses. Just think what the world would be like today if America did not step into the picture to rid the world of Hitler.and we were almost too late at addressing that situation then...for sure, we were too late for some 5 million innocent people (the murdered Jews). When the righteous sit idle.it's evil that prevails. Pass 'this' on..... Your Sister, Zettalee

Come on you guys, no matter what era or what year, we want you at “The Root!” Please invite your Bravo-ette and your other guests. Recently through the internet, I was able to get in touch with a buddy who served with me in Company D, 35th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division during WW 11 on Luzon. This was during early 1945 until the division was shipped to Shuzwoka (Sp), Japan as occupation forces in January, 1946. I have talked with him and his wife on the telephone, as well as exchanged letters with him. His name is Charlie Como, and he lives in Fall River, MA. Should there be anyone out there who remembers him or me, and wants to get in touch, let me know. It would be great to hear from someone who might share experiences during those months of combat.

I used to date Pappy Boyington's daughter Peggy while she was a student at Medford High School in Medford Oregon.Peggy was living with her grandparents at the time. This would have been back in 1955. I understand that Peggy has passed away. This information was revealed at one of the class reunion's. For some reason nothing is written about Peggy. Peggy was a bright pretty girl. Very popular in school. I would like to know something about her life. Did she go on to college, marry, and have a family?

I got this e-mail from a great lady. She is the sister of Steven Gilmer (KIA "C" 1/35 06-03-68). He was my platoon leader. I think this letter says volumes so, I wanted to share it with the ones that really understand. Be well brothers. "DOC" Olea.

Doc I just wanted to say THANK YOU. Your sister in arms Becky.

You may enjoy reading the attached story about a Vietnam vet and Ann Margaret as told by the vet's wife.

Richard, (my husband), never really talked a lot about his time in Vietnam other than he had been shot by a sniper. However, he had a rather grainy, 8 x 10 black &white photo he had taken at a USO show of Ann Margaret with Bob Hope in the background that was one of his treasures. A few years ago, Ann Margaret was doing a book signing at a local bookstore. Richard wanted to see if he could get her to sign the treasured photo so he arrived at the bookstore at 12 o'clock for the 7:30 signing. When I got there after work, the line went all the way around the bookstore, circled the parking lot, and disappeared behind a parking garage. Before her appearance, bookstore employees announced that she would sign only her book, and no memorabilia would be permitted. Richard was disappointed, but wanted to show her the photo and let her know how much those shows meant to lonely GI's so far from home. Ann Margaret came out looking as beautiful as ever and, as 2nd in line, it was soon Richard's turn. He presented the book for her signature and then took out the photo. When he did, there were many shouts from the employees that she would not sign it. Richard said, "I understand. I just wanted her to see it." She took one look at the photo, tears welled up in her eyes and she said, "This is one of my gentlemen from Viet Nam and I most certainly will sign his photo. I know what these men did for their country and I always have time for "my gentlemen". With that, she pulled Richard across the table and planted a big kiss on him. She then made quite a to-do about the bravery of the young men she met over the years, how much she admired them, and how much she appreciated them. There weren't too many dry eyes among those close enough to hear. She then posed for pictures and acted as if he was the only one there. Later at dinner, Richard was very quiet. When I asked if he'd like to talk about it, my big strong husband broke down in tears. "That's the first time anyone ever thanked me for my time in the Army," he said. That night was a turning point for him. He walked a little straighter, and, for the first time in years, was proud to have been a Vet. I'll never forget Ann Margaret for her graciousness and how much that small act of kindness meant to my husband. I now make it a point to say Thank You to every person I come across who served in our Armed Forces. Freedom does not come cheap and I am grateful for all those who have served their country. If you'd like to pass on this story, feel free to do so. Perhaps it will help others to become aware of how important it is to acknowledge the contribution our service people make. With global circulation ... hopefully this will reach Jane Fonda

Jonnie was a real shooter, I knew him during our days on the 25th Div pistol team, 64-65. The guy had more consentration than all of us. He was not standoffish, he was just thinking obout his next 900. When the day was over, he was a regular guy. I oftened wished I had his coolness. Jonnie was the only Afro-American on the teams at that time, he could shoot, he was a team player, that's what counts. He was just a nice, quiet guy, I missed him.

I served with recon 2/35 66-67. I was recently put in touch with your site by "Doc" Ronald Wilson, my friend and comrade. After recon I flew gunships out of the Delta for a while. I left the army in 75 with 50% disability and bummed around the country selling dope and working as a carnival barker. I settled in Tidewater Virginia and worked for the government as an illustrator for a while. That being too much like the army I left that job and agained bummed around painting murals and back drops for theatrical performances, designing restrauant interiors and writing stage plays. I presently live in Memphis Tn with my lovely wife Rosemary Falk, a Canadian but please don't think of me as a traitor because the Canadians are really a lot like us, they just got nothing important to do.

I have been searching for any information on James J. Brennan from New York, NY. He is the biological grandfather of my son, Michael, who is now almost 17. I know that James died very young at the age of 20, on 2/9/68. I also know that he was an MP around Saigon and was re-assigned to near Danang at the time of his death. I have been trying to find out about him, any pictures, or any relatives of James J. Brennan that are still living. I know my son would greatly appreciate any stories, photos, or information that you may have or can recollect of James that you could share with him. Even though my son never met him, he feels a great sense of respect for what he did and those who laid down their lives for our Country.

For anyone in the vicinity of Kenosha, WI. I am looking for information on Eugene Leroy Burbey C Co 2/35th KIA 9/22/69. I have some information that Eugene is buried in the St. John's Cemetery in Kenosha. The trouble is that I cannot even confrm that there is a St. John's cemetery associated with Kenosha City. We may be talking about Kenosha County but there seem to be 3 or 4 St. John Cemeteries there in various towns. He is listed as a Roman Catholic (but this doesn't necessarily mean a Catholic cemetery). The county Historical Society lists him as KIA in Vietnam but doesn't even have information on who his parents were (as they do on other local KIA's). Can anyone in that area perhaps find an obituary in the newspaper archives? He died on 9/22/69 so funeral would typically of been about 7 to 14 days later. I am intersted in just what cemetery he is buried in? Also we are still searching for a photo of him for our web site. Thanks, Doc

Hey you band of brothers, how are ya? It has been a while since I left anything here. I have a question for my brothers of "D" 1/35th. I just read the timeline for Oct. 1968 and saw the date of OCT. 5, 1968 as a day when General stone came to LZ_Jean. I was Head medic for "D" at the time. I need to know who the 3 guys were that had Malaria and I put them on the Generals bird. I know it sounds a little crazy but, those that served with me know that, my company's men were priority one. There was so much activity going on that, we couldn't get a medi-vac. One of the guys had 105+ fever(after being stripped and held down in the rain. He was delireous and I said to hell with protocal. Any one know who these guys were? Thanks brothers. Be well and cool. "DOC"

About 5:30 every morning, before I set out for work, I have a little routine that I normally go through. I bring up our web site and take a look at the guest book postings. Then I click onto the KIA section. Here I am looking for two things. (1) I watch the revolving photo display until a certain photo that is particuarly meaningful comes up. (2) I check to see the names of our Brothers who were killed on this date. Then I click on each of these to see their photo and give some thought to each. This morning there were 3 names under "killed on this date". They were Anton Bloemhard; Thomas Monk; and Richard Shuck. When I clicked on their names I found that there were no photo's for any of them. It kind of made me sad. It's as though we've sort of forgotten about them. Guys please, we can't let this happen. If you've got a photo of one of these guys (or any other that doesn't have one displayed) we need it. Even if it is not good or a part of a group picture it is better than nothing. For any family or childhood friends who check in, if you don't see a photo of your loved one but have one at home please get a hold of us. All photo's can be sent to my e-mail address or my mail address at 1335 N. Broad St./ Woodbury, NJ 08096. Please guys let's not be too busy with our every day lives to remember our old Brothers. We owe them this much. Thanks, Doc

If you are in doubt about whether or not you are on the Mail Roster contact me and I will let you know. Thanks to all for prompt payment of 2003 Dues and some need to get them into the mail to me ASAP. Member Cards are made twice monthly so you should get yours within 30 days of paying your Dues. If you arent sure if you are a Member then email me and I can let you know. Also the roster on the website reflects Association Membership and is being updated daily. I still have a quite a few to update. Please pass this info on to your buds you are in touch with who do not have a puter. Don't forget articles for the next Magazine are due to me by March 15th. Also make your Reunion Reservations now at the hotel please. We need to know how many of you to expect. The Assn has only blocked a certain amount of rooms and once those are reserved we can ask for more and hopefully get them at the same low rate. We are unable to block more rooms up front as the Assn would be liable for payment if the rooms are not used. If you wait too long you may not be able to get the Reunion Low room rate. Pete Birrow and the Reunion Committee have planned a bangup time for this years 5th Reunion. We want to set a record attendance so be there. You can always cancel your room later if you cant make it to the Buffalo Reunion. The info and Forms are in the Cacti Magazine. Ben Youmans, Assn. Secretary/Treasurer & Cacti Editor/Publisher

Fellow Cacti: First of all, congratulations Gary! Second, we have a new section call "News and Views". Click on the "Home" menu and you'll find News and Views there. Third, I'm looking for information about the Medal for Military Merit awarded by the Vietnamese government because we have at least one KIA who received it. Please contact me with any info.

My cousin Spc Paul Demaline was killed in Vietnam. He as well as all those that fought and died and to those that made it back I give to you my most sincere thanks and respect. Paul is missed very much by his family and friends. I don't think i have ever met anyone who didn't like Paul. Thanks Paul for all you have done and are still doing in your memories.

I thank every soldier that served this country so that I can enjoy the freedoms I have today. My father served in the military and I know the sacrifices made to serve one's country. My generation takes for granted many of the freedoms you have fought and defended. I can only speak for myself and say, "thank you."

Fellow Cacti - You may have noticed that we have changed our color scheme on the website. Well, if you don't like it, CHANGE IT! That's right, you can go to the new color preferences page and choose your own colors. You have to have cookies enabled, but you probably do unless you have disabled them on purpose. Also, to all you Korean War vets, we would like to add more Korean War Stories to our site. Please send them to me. And if you know Korean War cacti who are not internet compliant, please contact them. We need to preserve our Cacti heritage through these stories. See you all in Buffalo!
