Cacti 35th Infantry Guestbook
October 2004 - September 2005

1775. A terribly long list of KIA's from C2/35 on this day in 1968. From one who made it through that tragedy to Tim Sines (Doc.), Ronald Stuckey, Johnny Fuller and the rest of the brve soldiers on that list, May your families enjoy the freedom you cherished and be sure you will always be remembered.

1771. Sept 29 - '69 - Bravo 2/35 got ambushed in the Chu Pau's. We lost a lot of good guys between that day and the next. Spent the scariest night of my life on LP and then dashing back down the trail into the perimeter so Puff and Spooky (or whomever) could work out. For those of us who went and came back - Jim, Ole, Tom, Indian, Ray and all the others - Welcome Home Brothers. For those who stopped growing old those two days in September - we miss you and pray for you... With much luck and the grace of the god's no one will have to do it again, or anymore.

1769. Just reminiscing and wondering what happened to some of the guys. Ken Spradlin (Kentucky) in particular. I see his picture but the phone number doesn't seem to be any good. We were in A Co. 2/35 4th Infantry 1968 when he was hit pretty bad below the waist near Duc Lap. I helped put him on a stretcher and he was finally hoisted to a hovering chopper. That day was pretty crazy. Lots of lead flying. I came down with Malaria later and saw him in the hospital in either Na Trang or in Japan. I forget. I forget a lot, but not enough. Sure would like to hear from him. He must be in his late 50's now like me. Seems like a million years ago and yet some of it is just like yesterday. If you read this Kentucky, drop me an email. Like to hear from you. God bless our boys in harms way around the globe. It never ends, does it?

1754. I didn't have e-mail access yesterday making me one day late with my rememberance of Roger Fulkerson, a man I loved and the father of my daughter Lynne. A day doesn't pass without thoughts of him and gratitude that Lynne is in my life. To all his Cacti Brothers, West Point classmates and friends, thank you for your continued thoughtfulness and affection for his daughter. He was a remarkable man. Thank you for remembering with us.

1751. Hi all, I spoke with Ranger Jim Tibbit a little while ago and he said to tell everyone he's doing fine. He lives in Leesville with his daughter-inlaw and 7 year old granddaughter. Their electricity is out, water is scarce and no gas to be found, but he said the house it fine and they're getting by. I tried getting in touch with Roy Sittig (Ville Platte) and only reached his answering machine. I called his brother Charles and he hadn't heard from him since before Rita made landfall. Hopefully everything is ok.

Phil Salois, VVA Chaplain's meeting in Attleboro MS Sunday night and will be returning Friday/Saturday. I hear flights have been delayed all over, even from Minneapolis to Anchorage. 1735. I attended a Joe Finch organized cookout at Walter Reed for our 25th wounded/recovering Vets a few weeks ago. This is about the third event I have attended at Walter Reed and I'm amazed at the spirit and morale of our proud Vets!!! One Vet - an attractive Lady - a Medic - was injured in a rollover of a humvee in Iraq with the 25th - back surgery...etc...her daughter is now a medic in Iraq. Another soldier lost both legs below the knees - he was wearing a baseball cap that had the words: " Blown Up" on front and: "Iraq Sucks" on the side...he was quite a character - great spirits...these young Americans continue to amaze me with their positive outlook. Joe Finch is a 25th Vet - a medivac pilot - who organizes these events and who is dedicated to serving our wounded vets - what an inspiriation he is - and he does it because he cares! 1731. My name is Pete Minix, and my hobby for the last 7 years, has been collecting and compiling World War II veteran histories. I currently have over 160 World War II veterans, from all branches, in my private library. None of this information is given out or published for a monetary gain. This is at no cost to you or your family. All I would need are any documents (copies), that you would wish to share, or pictures of you during that time. Also, I would also like a current picture of you today. I can send you a large self-addressed envelope for mailing purposes. If you have a scanner attached to your home computer, you could scan your pictures and/or documents to send to me. If you wish to share this information with me, I would greatly appreciate it. I look forward to hearing from you. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or call. If you chose not to share your story with me, I completely understand and will respect your wishes. Sincerely, Peter D. Minix P.S.: I am a former sergeant, weapons platoon, USMC, for 5 years.

My uncle served in the korean War and I'm very proud he raised me you see he was one of the lucky ones coming from Puerto Rico to the war as an infantry soldier he faced not only the enemy but the harch weather, snow boundaries and a uniform that stiffened as they could he took(3) bullets and still came out alive Thank God. Now at 81 he still has good mental attitude and will sober at the thought,he gave me all his medals and said 'What do I want them for"? My tears fell down my cheeks cause in his heart he knows those metals almost cost him his life and his greatest medal is ME! Thank you on his behalf-Angel Ramos and Ana God Bless

1709. Got this email yesterday from Doc Johnson - figured I'd pass it on: "Hi Mike, Good to hear from you and thanks for the concern. We fared well, just some tree limbs in the yard and loss of power for about a day. Baton Rouge has doubled in size over the last week and it looks like it could be permanent. We’ll have to get used to longer lines etc. The least we can do for these poor unfortunate soles that have lost everything. Doc J"

1697. Just wanted to let everyone know that Nissi Fraise, widow of David Fraise who was KIA in Afghanistan last year with A 2/35, is safe and sound with her baby and her sister. Nissi lived in Gretna, LA,(Nawlins)area and had just purchased a house, and it is now gone totally. She and baby and sister left before Katrina and went to Houston, from there to Cacti Land where she is staying with a friend. The Cacti have helped her with clothes and necessaties etc. They literally got out with just the clothes they had. We are desperately trying to find out about other Cacti Families that were in the area of LA, MS and AL hit by the hurricane. Many of them may need assistance. If any Cacti can offer housing, assistance or anything please email me at C23568@verizon.net ----- We are not sure who may need what yet but I would like to at least put together a list of whatever our Cacti could offer if it is needed. Thank You.

1695. More good news from our Cacti in LA.------Thank you for thinking of us in Louisiana. More than ever we can think of ourselves as a "third world" state. I am fine in Lake Charles where we had no storm effects whats-so-ever. I did move my daughter and her baby to New Orleans last week and that lasted all of 2 days before we evacuated her out on Saturday before the hurricane. She and my grandaughter her safe at my home although everything she is under water in New Orleans. Thanks for the thought. From what I am hearing on the news today, I may use my combat experience on the streets. John Hargroder Delta 2/35 '68

1694. I got word from Roger Ladd that contact has been made with Doug Oliver HHC 1/35 1967-68 Doug lives Moss Point which is right at Pascagoula, MS. ---Doug's email to Roger --- Quite a blow, some of these folks have nothing. I am sure you have seen the pictures and by this time are tire of them. But these folks have nothing. I think our Congressman Gene Taylor said it best last night on the radio," I want to say to all my collegues that if you come down here for a photo-op you better bring something". I only had some fencing and trees down. I came out really good. The constant sound of huey's and 130's over head remind me of a galaxy far far away. Blackhawks and Coast Guard SAR helicopters are everywhere it has been one hell of a week.

CactiBen --  USA -- 09/06/2005

1693. Got an email after I inquired about Garner Brock KWV 35th-----Thank you for inquiring after my father-in-law. He asked me if I would answer you, to let you know that at this time, we are all fine. Here in Columbus, MS, my husband and I and my husband’s sister and here family were without power for a number of hours, but we are all back to our routines now – work is fine, and our homes are fine. My in-laws, further south in Kosciusko, MS had a longer power outage, which was quite a hardship, since daddy sits and rests in a motorized recliner chair, and sleeps in a motorized hospital bed. It was difficult for them to get by without power. My brother in law took a generator to them, and that did help them get through until their power came back on. None of us had any home damage or serious problems – we are so very blessed. We now turn our thoughts and prayers to the people on the gulf coast, and hope that their hardship is alleviated as quickly as possible. Again, sir, thank you for your inquiry. Sincerely, Patricia Brock

1677. Got an email from BG Landau, who has been in touch with Dennis Dauphin, A 2/35. Here it is -----He’s OK. Family is OK, too. I just talked to him on the phone for 15 minutes. His house still stands, albeit without the trees and fence, and he has water and sewer restored as well as telephone land line as of late last night. No electricity yet. He has a battery powered radio to catch the news. Federal relief has reached his area [Ocean Springs]. I think Dennis is in for a shock when he sees the pictures of his old town, New Orleans.

1674. Another email from a Cacti Bro in LA ----- I live on the West side of the state. We have about 3000 in the area from New Orleans. The count is groing every day. As the people run out of money they go to our civic center. There they are fed and taken care of. If you know of any body in the Cacti that needs help in my area let me know. Raymond Maylen D,1/35 Cacti for ever

1673. I sent emails to our Cacti in LA, MS and AL. I will post the responses I get so all will be updated. 1.Lee Ingram ---- Things north of Dothan are pretty normal. The eastern corridor from Mobile to I-10 is a mess. Lots of property damage, loss of power and the predictable cleanup following the effects of a hurricane. We are so blessed compared to the folks in New Orleans and Biloxi. Many of our utilities crews are already there attempting to restore power on the outlying areas of the cities. Not much can be done until the rubble in Mississippi is moved, and of course there isn't much that can be done in New Orleans until the water recedes. Catch 22 there... they need electrical power to run the auxiliary pumps that back up the diesel main pumps. Please keep that entire area in your prayers. Lee 2. Bobby Hurt -- We lost our electricity for a few days but, all is well here in Birmingham. Hope you and your family are safe... God bless and help the folks in New Orleans.. Take Arms........ 1591. Cacti, Sir's! I hope that the reunion in KY was everything, and more, of what You had hoped for it to be. As some know, I do a lot of searches online, in my efforts to try to find information and informationsources, that will be of use to Veterans. Not seldomly, I "stumble" on other things, than what I was initially searching for. Yet again, this has happened. And this time, what I "stumbled" on, is perhaps of interrest of Cacti's whom served in A-company, 2nd Bn, during 1966. Please check link: http://photo2.si.edu/offerings/offerings.html The photograph on this websites top right, of a helmet with the 25th ID's shoulderpatch.... 1576. Hey brothers, I have some great news to share. I finally got in contact with one of the M-60 guys from "D" 1/35 68-69. His name is Carlton Campbell. Many of us called him Lankey and some called him the "Crazy Okie". He lives in Oklahoma City. He does not have e-mail but, would love to hear from some of his brothers. His phone number is (405)634-0107. He asks that you identify yourself right away. I was proud to let him know about our wonderful association and the great brothers we all have. He seemed real interested in the association so maybe we can get him on board. I would love to see him make it to the reunion in Scottsdale. Thanks brothers. Be well and cool "DOC" Olea

1566. The highlight of the most recent reunion was having 31 family members of our KIA's there. We had one daughter who was 3 yrs old when her Dad was killed. She rode a Greyhound bus for 18 hours to be there. Her Dad had a line platoon then was Recon plt leader. The guys who knew she was coming that served with her DAD,(about 15 guys between the two platoons)were a little nervous of course. After the first night the two platoons were almost fighting to see who could talk with her next.Tears flowed like Niagara Falls. She promised to be at next years reunion as the guy who won a 50/50 donated his 500+ bucks to her to fly. A Mom met the guys who were with her son when he was killed. A brother met guys from his kia brothers unit. We had sisters, brothers, moms, widows who never remarried and several kids who never ever knew their Dads, and many nephews and neices they never got to know. It was a wonderful time for all of them, as it brought answers to the families who only had the official version the guys they met could explain what was happening at the time. The families all said, that this is the best thing that has ever happened to them since their loss. I tell you we have a few guys who do nothing but try to locate families of our Cacti KIA's to get photos to go on our website and to invite them to join us at the reunions. Many guys at the reunion were so thankful that they were able to finally meet and talk with the family of a lost buddy. It is not Closure (I dont believe in it) but a putting at peace a little bit of bad memories. Knowing that they brought info and knowledge to the families made these guys so happy and feeling much better about themselves. I wish every military group would do the same for their KIA families for they are the ones who still hurt so much even after so many years. Several of them said the not knowing the details, not knowing if their loved one suffered, was a hero or what is the worst thing they have had to deal with over the years. Makes me feel so good to know our organization was a help to them. Thanks to all my Cacti Brothers who helped accomplish this great feat.

1564. Just finished a great book called " GENERATION KILL" by Evan Wright. It is about a Marine recon team in the early stages of the the war in Iraq and this book will make you appreciate what our brave young soldiers went trough. All Americans should read this. There are many similarities of what we experienced on a day to day basis. Incompetemt officers, great officers, good NCO's, bad NCO's, defined missions with purpose, missions that made no sense, etc. Our active Cacti probably had similiar experiences in Aganistan. read it and spread the word...check it out ts 2/35th 68-69

Wes died May 8,1968 in Kontum Province, Vietnam fighting for our country's freedom. We placed a plaque created by a classmate as well at his grave site today with a number of classmates there honoring him. Lots of tears were shed in his memory. I miss him so much. Those who did survive and come home were rediculed by some, which was shameful!!! I have fond memories of Wes as a kind and gentle man with so much to give in life. 1446. My name is Marina Castro-Samuel and my father was Cpl. Armando Castro. I lost my father June 2 1953, he was KIA during the Korean War, although I was only 22 days old I wish I could have had the chance to give him a hug and tell him how much I loved him. Thank you all for this wonderful website, I am so proud of being the daughter of a Cacti. I would like to know if anyone remembers my father, if you do please contact me via email at macasa53@bellsouth.net May God bless everyone of you. Marina Samuel-Castro

1445. I used to think that HANOI JANE A K A JANE FONDA was the bane of our existance back in 1968 and 1969 when I was IN COUNTRY. Never did I dream that an even worse TRAITOR would slander the next generation of CACTI and the rest of their brothers and sisters in arms. I am refering to BAGDAD BERTHA A K A ROSIE O`DONNELL. While guest hosting on the Tv show THE VIEW she stated several times that U S troops were rapeing IRACI WOMEN.

1444. This message is for Mr. Bob Jones,P.O.W. Baker company Korea; Mr Jones I recently spoke to on the phone about my uncle SGT. William (Billie) Shelton. I would like to thank you for the information you gave me. It sent me in a direction that not only allowed me to understand more fully what you men went through; but also help us find out what happened to him. We also have received his medals thanks to your leads. Mr. Jones, I have learned that my uncle did leave with 35th cacti infantry batalion 1, baker company from Okinawa, he sustained a head wound in September of 1950 and return to his unit the first part of November, he was captured Nov. 27, 1950 and died in captivity on March 31, 1951. I am in hopes that this new information will ring a bell with you. Also, I would like to know where and how I might obtain a cacti pow patch for the memorial my family is erecting in his honor and memory any information would be appreciated. Thank Kriste Elrod

1443. It is very hard to believe that 35 years have past since a 18 year old from Tennessee gave his life in that place we call Nam. On this day let us all remember our friend and comrade Herbert Horner. To most of us he was known as "Red" and yes Doc, I also remember Guinn and all the other friends we lost. Where have all the years gone??? Sonny

1442. I received the typical response from Sam's club concerning HanoiJane's book on their shelves. Here's my reply; This is a typical response of a "We can't take a stand",attitude of a person or a Business that has forgotten what the Founder stood for, which was the primary reason Wal-Mart was so successful. "Strong American Values"Not "HanoiJane"anti American Defeatism...With unimagative & Milktoast Leadership like this it's no wonder Wal-Mart is losing ground to the unions & Competitors. Too Bad...

1441. Whenever our group gets together at reunions we discover that about 50% of the photo's in our albumns is Guinn. There is a running joke among us that Guinn was such a camera hog that if one of us had of dropped our camera he would of dove on it just in case it went off. Well we'll all be meeting in Louisville this year . We just wish that Guinn was there to hog his way into our pictures. I'm getting ready to head out the door to drive down to "The Wall" to pay my annual respects on the date of his death. Bob Guinn Bravo 2/35 killed 35 years ago today. Rest in Peace old friend. We all miss you. Doc

1440. June the 8th is fast approaching. On that date in 1966 C/1st/35th was outside of Duc Co. Nva was in the area. James Stevens I think was at point. Then myself then in file was James Reiber and Gregory Barnell. I saw helment profiles of NVA approx,I recall about 25-50m away. Yelled at point. He opened fired then the rest. What seemed like an eternity maybe was only minutes. I saw the point get hit in the theigh then mylelf in the chest. After all of these years I still haven't got the facts and I don't want to take to the grave, hopefully for another 30 years. Frienly fire or real deal? Still feel bad about this. Was to bad to go back. Still feel that I let somebody down. God Bless those who finished the tour and those who gave the ultimate price. God bless the men of this war and those who serve now.

1439. This is a statement of rememberence for the firefight of June 3rd and 4th, I remember us humping all day and setting up a night location near ben het. It was around midnight that the NVA morter tubes started going off. LT Grosshart and I shared a foxhole that we dig in about 15 min. after the first incoming morter round. Heavy and fierce was the words to use. I was with the 1/35th co A 3rd plt Medic. we were on the opposite side of the worst attack but we had NVA come around us to try and penetrate the perimeter, proof was we found 2 dead NVA the next day 20 feet in front of my position.I remember Robert Floyd came across the perimeter with his 60 and tried to get a sniper out of the trees.I remember a chopper landing on a strobe lite in the night to drop ammo and evac wwounded.Remember hearing metel landing near our hole and reaching up and feeling in the dark for the hot scrapnel.Enemy tracers green and blueish in color came very near. I could hear screams of men, dident know if it us or them. This has played through my mind over the years. Thanks for reading and Bless the dead for giving their life that night. Doc Rose

1438. To day, it is 37 years since C, 1/35th set up for the night about 2 klicks from the Laotian border west of Ben Het SFC. The 4th platoon with about 23 men set up blocking a trail leading from Laos. Not a good idea as, later that evening, a fresh battalion of NVA decided to walk through their NDP. The fighting lasted all night and into the morning of June 4th. It was furious, intense and close--very, very close. We lost Butler, Brockmeyer and Gilmer almost immediately. Those few guys in the beleaquered 4th platoon fought like the hard core warriors that they are and held the line. What a great bunch of men for me to be privileged to be associated with! God bless them all-living and dead.

Actually there was a suite available- with a jacuzzi insted of a kitchen- for $179.

1419. Greetings, gentlemen! I'm looking for anyone who knew or served with Sgt Wesley W. Sperling, A/1/35th; KIA 05Apr68 in action near Kontum City. Wes and I went to school together for 12 years. I'm not a Vietnam vet but served in the USAF in Turkey from 69-73. Wes is buried in Arlington, NE; and a cousin of mine who was KIA in Aug. '67 lies in Arlington, VA. I can't usually get to either of those places on Memorial Day, so for the past 7 years I have been volunteering with the Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial since this is my adopted state. Anyway, in June I'm going back to NE for 40th reunion of Wes' and my high school class. I'd love to hear from anybody about Wes. Welcome home, Cacti! Roger F.

1416. 38 years ago today my big brother Joe was killed in the Battle Of Vinh Hien, Quang Ngai Province, Vietnam. I want to thank the Cacti Association for helping me to locate men who served with Joe and knew him during his service in 'Nam. I am compiling information for a book I am writing about his life. Although Joe was a civilian for 19 of his 20 years, his service in Vietnam is an integral part of his lifestory that me and my family want to share with others. Thank you to the Cacti men who served with Joe that I have spoken with and shared their memories of Joe, and those who were there on this day 38 years ago: Doc Joe Baker, Randy Morris, Jim Phillipe, and Mike Hord. I am still searching for more men out there who served with Joe. His Award of the Bronze Star with "V" Device reads as follows: "For Heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. On May 20, 1967 Specialist Four Ledesma distinguished himself while serving as a Fire Team Leader in Company C, 2d Batallion, 35th Infantry, which was conducting a search and destroy operation near Duc Pho. The company was engaged by a numerically superior enemy force deployed in defensive trenches and bunkers. Specialist Four Ledesma's Platoon had maneuvered to within a few meters of the enemy lines when it's advance was halted by intense small arms and automatic weapons fire. Undaunted by this, Specialist Four Ledesma crawled to withiin six feet of an enemy automatic weapon position and attempted to destroy it with rifle fire and grenades. Firing from a completely exposed position, he suppressed the enemy fire enough to allow his platoon members to advance and close with the enemy. As the machine gunner of the platoon began maneuvering forward Specialist Four Ledesma moved to his side to provide better protective fire but was mortally wounded in this heroic act. Specialist Four Ledesma's courasgeous and self-sacrificing actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on himself, his unit, and the United States Army." My family continues to love and miss Joe very much. His memory will never leave us. -David Ledesma P.S.- Joe's page can be located on the Vietnam Wall Memorial website http://www.thewall-usa.com

Yet and still, he has offered to mark a grave for us in Cincy AO. Which tells me you more able-bodied dudes can easily do that as well. 1412. Personally, I do not plan to shop at any PX while Jane Fonda's book is there. Of course, I can't shop there anyway, but that is beside the point. :) I have been boycotting her movies for 35 years. So far she seems not to have noticed.

I would think that the Army would be more sensitive to the nation's Vietnam Veterans. I doubt that there are many of us who would thank Hanoi Jane for what she did.

By the way, I stopped a Korean War veteran yesterday to shake his hand and thank him for his service. He was speachless.
