3452. Cacti - Reno is quickly approaching, as is the business meeting with Officer/Board Of Director elections. This year all elective positions are open to be filled by willing individuals. In case you are unaware the elective offices of the 35th Infantry Regiment Association (CACTI) are: President, Executive Vice-President, Senior VP Membership/Legal Advisor, VP Membership, Senior VP WWII & Korea Affairs, VP WWII & Korea Affairs, Senior VP Public Relations, VP Information Services/Cacti Times Editor, VP Internet Communications, VP Special Projects, Secretary, Treasurer, and Sergeant-At-Arms. While the current BOD has been polled to ascertain their interest in either staying in their current position, or running for another position, all positions remain open for qualified candidates. All it takes to be qualified is the desire to help your Cacti Brothers; a willingness to sit on the board and help chart the course of the association for the next 2 years; and of course a paid up membership. If you want additional information email me and I'll try to answer your questions. If you want to be considered as a candidate, email me and I'll see that your name is put on the list of interested candidates, and we'll go from there. I'm asking all nominations be submitted to me or any other Nominating Committee memeber no later than 4 July 2009. This year your Nominating Committee is comprised fo myself, Bill Wilds and Rick Strawn. This is your chance to make a positive mark on this great organization of ours. Take arms!

3450. Still looking for anyone who was with me during our layover in the Phillipines somtime aroung 1-7 April 1967. We were on our way to Pleiku when we were told the plane we were on was not going to Pleiku. We stayed there in the Air Force Visitors Quarters for about a week. We had nothing to do but go to the pool during the day and the club at night. Sure beat what we did for the rest of our tour once we did get to Pleiku. Once at Pleiku are group got split up but two of them, Russell Krill and Lonnie LeBombard (KIA on 9 Feb 68) were two that I remember. Let me know if you might be one that was there or if you might know someone that may have been there. Dickie C-1/35 APR-67 MAR-68

3449. June 24,1966 early morning, our 1st 35th Recon Platoon was told to "check'em out". Bunkers we had discovered across an open area a couple hundred yards from us.We knocked out a outpost,I should say S/Sgt Damien Kaaihue did, by attacking & elimating the four NVA Bunker occupants. Then, all 25 or 30 men went online walking toward the Bunkers. Just inside the thin treeline. Where we "attacked" a NVA Regimental Holding area. We lost many of our Buddies that day. But by the Grace of GOD we were never overran.America is Blessed by GOD to produce men like those I served with in Recon. Ed Hill Recon 1st 35th 1965-66 Full writeup on Cacti website.

3447. Served with the Cacti while it was a Battle Group. At that time they had an Mortar Battery, 4.2 ", assigned to them. We weren't around long, the Pentomic set up, but we were a proud group. The 35th had the honor to march in the Hawaii statehood parade. I'll never forget our 1st Sgt, Bernard J Zombroski. Hope I spelled it right, or I'm dead. I would like to hear from anyone who served with the Cacti during that time.

3446. 20 men died as the results of a ambush that took place on 3 july 1966. there has never been a day since then that i have not thought of the true hero's of the 3rd platoon, company B, 1st battalion, 35th infantry. a ambush that should not have happened. for some unknown reason this battle has all but removed from history. the truth of this battle will never be released as long as any of us are still alive. the question myself and others have been asking for years will never be answered. may all the men that was killed in action in a war that was never meant to be won from the very beginning, rest in peace.

3443. As I frequently do, just caught up on the Cacti Guestbook postings. I want to echo Bill's remarks about the latest edition of the Cacti Times. If you are reading this, you have the capability to receive the Times via electronic mail. John does a tremendous service for all of us and I am grateful for the news shared and updates on our active duty brothers. I encourage anyone not currently subscribed via your local computer to get connected. John also posted his remarks that our reunion is almost here. I know there are many of you that read this page and keep abreast of the Associations activities, yet have never attended a reunion. Whatever your reasons are, I hope you will reconsider this year. I have attended only two and they were both very memorable. Seeing old friends and showing each other photographs of grand-children, restored cars, fresh dug ponds, whatever was worth the trip. This year my BFF Dave Grinde and his lovely wife Penni are the hosts on the ground and that tells me it will be first class all the way. Trust me on this, you will be glad you made the trip to Reno. We are not getting any younger and our ranks are thinning at an alarming rate. Nuff said. Hope all had a very blessed Fathers day and please take a moment to remember those we owe the debt of being able to celebrate with our families this day. Cacti Lee

3442. Right now I'm thinking about how great it will be to see my Cacti brothers again at the reunion in Reno, July 23-26. We all have such a good time. If you've never attended a reunion and are not sure if you'd enjoy it, I can assure you that it will be a terrific experience. It's amazing how much healing can take place in just three or four days. Do yourself (and your family) a favor, make a commitment to come. You'll be glad you did. See you in Reno!

I'd just like to honor Guinn's life with this message. Also, hello to Dick Arnold, who I have met in person and hope to see again some day, and to Tiny, who is from Guinn's area in Michigan, I'll hope to meet you some day. I was with "C" 1/35 as a new medic. I was with the 2nd platoon and my platoon leader was Lt. Steven Gilmer. I started the day as a green troop. By midnight I was a seasoned veteran. I received the following e-mail from Greg Flewelling a cousin of our Vietnam KIA James Curry (D Co 1/35th KIA 4/1/69) Jim Curry was my cousin; I was almost 10 when Jimmy gave his life for our country. What I remember the most about Jimmy was his playing in the band in the cellar of my Aunt Charlotte?Ts house on Falcon Street in East Boston . Years after his passing his brother Bobby successfully got the town of East Boston to dedicate the square at the end of Falcon Street in Jimmy name. I think about Jimmy from time to time and wonder what if; Every Memorial Day I take time to reflect on his life and the sacrifice he made. Today I saw Jimmy?Ts name on the traveling wall in New Market NH and learned how to research his name at http://thewall-usa.com/info.asp?recid=11563 I have heard stories about how Jimmy died and know he received the Purple Heart. I was wondering if you knew any of the details and would be willing to share? I found the only picture I have of Jimmy and would like to share it with you. If anyone knew Jimmy Curry and can help Greg please contact me and I will put you in touch with Greg. Thanks- Doc Hall

3396. Hey guys here's a question i havent been able to get an answer to I came home emergency leave on a c141 end of tet 68. plane was full of pallets of crates end to end up to the ceiling and the length of the plane . I asked the crew chief what was in the boxes he said empty ammo crates I'd seen a lot of ammo boxes but none like that, plane was so full there was no room to lay down so i climbed up on those empty ammo crates and slept hours and hours. when i climbed down the crew chief had a very wierd look on his face and said "did you have a good sleep?" i said "yeah" cause i did he still had that wierd look on his mug and shook his head and muttered "grunts" i thought he was talking about the engine noise i rode that plane to vandenberg and life went on but i never forgot that wierd look, and I didnt go back to the Nam Flash forward to about 1982 I'm fighting a bad case of undiagnosed ptsd and on tv news was video of mia remains coming back from vietnam and shit it was one of those "empty ammo crates". I knew in an instant end of tet, the very wierd look i never forgot, the bird stuffed full. There were no flags drapeing anything and the only honor guard was me blowing z's and oblivious to what I was sleeping on but can any one tell me how many coffins i slept so soundly on while escapeing hell with my life and two purple hearts. I hope everyone had a good memorial day thanks art hughes

3394. I got this today from an old buddy who served in the 173rd. I thought it good enough to share with you all. The Brotherhood..........."I now know why men who have been to war yearn to reunite. Not to tell stories or look at old pictures. Not to laugh or weep. Comrades gather because they long to be with the men who once acted at their best; Men who suffered and sacrificed, who were stripped of their humanity. I did not pick these men. They were delivered by fate and the military. But I know them in a way I know no other men. I have never given anyone such trust. They were willing to guard something more precious than my life. They would have carried my reputation, the memory of me. It was part of the bargain we all made, the reason we were so willing to die for one another. As long as I have my memory, I will think of them all, everyday. I am sure that when I leave this world, my last thought will be of my family and my comrades....Such good men." Author unknown.

3393. This post is dedicated to Rodney Kent Wunschel, B, 2/35th 1969. He lost an arm and was broken up badly bringing me ammo in an ambush off LZ Penny in May 69. I lost track of him completely (I could not even remember his first name) until I happened upon his story on a genealogical site looking for something else. I was so shocked by the story that I put him out of my mind again until I started thinking about today. I misplaced the original link and can no longer find anything other than the photo of his grave: http://iowagravestones.org/gs_view.php?id=98245 . The original story suggested that he suffered a lengthy rehab but never got over the injuries he suffered. May peace be with you Rod!

3391. A number of my friends and neighbors called me today to wish me a "Happy Memorial Day." I tactfully explained to each of them that there is nothing "Happy" about Memorial Day. To me it is a somber day of "Rememberance." So, enjoy your day off from work, don't eat too much of your grilled hamburgers. And if you wanted to, you could drink a warm beer to the guys on the KIA list and say thank you for your sacrifice. Don't know whether I let you guys know but I've changed my email address to dfbutters@verizon.net.

3389. Comment: Saturday 5/23 I had the opportunity to go to Hoisington, Kansas to attend the funeral ceremony of 2nd Lt. Edward Schwartz. He was killed in action on November 28th 1950. His remains were just identified and returned home this last week. Doc. Hall asked me to go and represent the 35th Infantry Regiment. I was amazed at the support of the small town residents, and the family as they gathered to honor this fallen hero. It was a blessing to me to be able to witness this love and harmony that was so evident there at the graveside services. It was an official Military graveside service, conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. 59 years later his remains were brought to rest in his home town of Kansas. The family finally got closure to this tragic event. Soon we will honor Cacti Schwartz on our KIA memorial page on our web site. This will be a Memorial Day that will be etched in everyone's mind that was present a this graveside service. I am thankful to have been present to witness this moving event. Alan Olsen (OLE)

3388. Being a former combat veteran of the 35th. Infantry Regiment from 1951-52 during the Korean WAR, it always brings back some sad memories of those members that were very close during times when your life depended on each other and knowing that so many are not here now but those memories will always remain and you can be thankful that you knew those that were so close, especially Reggie Mims from Monroe, Louisiana, who I stayed close with until the day he was no longer with us but went to our beloved savior. Thanks to all who may and have visted our guestbook and please continue to remember all those that gave their all so that those of us that are still here could remain free.

3387. On this Memorial Day, I would like to remember the brave men of Recon Platoon, Hq Co, 1st Bn 35th Inf who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom so many years ago in the jungles of Vietnam. Major Raymond Johnson (Company Commander, Hq Co 1st Bn 35th Inf killed in helicopter crash after he made Major and was transferred to the 14th Inf) SSG Kenneth Kaaihue (Recon)SP4 Gary Edwards (Recon) Sgt Bob Kinney (Recon) SSG Ronald Kent (Recon) SSG James Haugh (Recon killed on his 2nd tour in 1968 with the 101st.) There are others who gave their lives also from Recon but time has clouded my memory as to recalling all their names but they are not forgotten. I remember the guys in my squad who are still living today also. Bill Carpenter (Teddy Bear)Freeman Mimbs Jr. (Junior), Oscar Whatley, (Gunner) Ron Ray ( my RTO who didn't know how to operate a PRC 25 when he came to the squad LOL) and Johnny Maddox. Captain John Fielding (S2 Officer who liked to go out with Recon for some strange reason, LOL) You guys are my heroes and I am very proud to have had the priviledge of being your squad leader. I could count on all of you and never had to worry about you guys not doing your jobs or taking care of every one in the squad when the going got rough. I hope to see all of you in Reno in July. Also a special thank you for the "Cacti times". Though I have read extensively about the war, it is "the times" that has brought me much closer to the man who gave his life in service, protecting my rights, freedoms, & liberties, my father SSG Bobby Senters (my "Superman")A/2/35. As I was 2 years old at his passing, I only "know" him through my mothers loving memories and the Viet Nam Vets I have had the pleasure of meeting through the years. 3338. It has been such a pleasure to visit this site over the years. It has progressed into a very professional site for family members to see the great unit their sons, brothers and fathers were a part of. Thanks for all the hard work that all of you do. I appreciate the honor you have given all the deceased soldiers. It is very touching to know they are not forgotten.

3337. I am CW2 Tomi L. McMoore, ?oChief,? of Echo Forward Support Company and current Unit Maintenance Officer / Technician for the ?oCacti? Battalion. I have been with this BN for about two years now and am currently on my 2nd tour (as a "Cacti") to Iraq in our efforts to help their country stand alone. I have been serving for almost 18 years now and this BN has the tightest camaraderie by far in any of my past units. This website is also a testimony of that closeness of brotherhood. I just wanted to extend my gratitude to all of you who have served and continue to serve, and express my honor for being a fellow ?oCacti? among all of you great people of which share a rich history being part of this organization. God bless all of you, past and present. Peace be with you all and take care.

3333. 3-31-2009 Ever since 1951 I have thought many many times of a good friend that lost his life in the Korean War. He was Anthony "Tony" Srok. I was living in Boyes Hot Springs, CA, about 50 miles north of San Francisco. As I recall it was the summer of 1950 that Tony's mom and dad purchased a piece of land very near my home and they started building a duplex to have someplace to go when they wanted to get out of San Francisco periodically. My buddies and I were about 16 and Tony was a few years older and I believe he was an only child. His mom and dad were very friendly people, foreign born I believe. My folks were also from across the pond, Sweden. My dad was a small town builder and helped the Srok's build their duplex. Tony was his mom and dad's greatest pride I am sure. He was a son who showed great respect for his folks and other adults. Tony fit right in with all the local guys and we spent many days and evenings chasing around and especially swimming in the local pool. Tony was an excellent diver as was one of our other buddies, Jack Bowen. I did most of the belly flops. After that summer we din't see Tony again and then sadly in the fall of 1951 his folks told us of their great loss. As kids we didn't realize what such a loss it must have been to them. Through the years I have never forgotten Tony or his folks. I enlisted in the USAF in July of 1952 and served four years, thus I have numerous memories of the Korean War. In summary, Tony has not been forgotten and will always live in our memories of a staight up son, a good friend, and a very fine human being. I am now 75 years old and I guess just by living this long I can look back over many years of history and am entitled to a heavy heart thinking of fellas like Tony and so many others that sacrificed everything for our great nation. To all of them my hats off and a special prayer on my lips for all of them. If anyone reads this blog and knew Tony it would bring me a great deal of joy to hear from them, even just a note saying they knew and served with Tony.

3322. I just got home from spending parts of the last three days attempting to adequately represent the 35th Infantry Association at the services for Lt Daniel Hyde in Modesto, CA. Lt. Hyde as a platoon leader in A 2/35 was killed in Iraq on this past March 7 when his Humvee was hit by an RPG. American flags were flying all over Modesto and the flag of the Cacti Green was present at every service. Easily hundreds (probably into the thousands) of people showed up to the various services. As a somewhat peripheral member of the Association (I?Tve been to three reunions) and someone who as a result of events in ?T67 and ?T68 as well as the life-long repercussions of those events has become at times more than a little unsocial, cynical, and numb, it was a powerful life-affirming but totally emotionally draining experience. I went expecting to show up to the services and express to the family the condolences of our association and then just go back to my regular life untouched. Instead I was very touched by the quality of the people I met. Lt. Hyde?Ts family were amazingly strong and courageous people, who despite their own grief and loss spent hours and hours meeting and greeting and at times supporting the countless numbers of people touched by their son?Ts life and death. It was easy to see why Daniel was such an outstanding person and soldier. The services and what those services communicated about the life of Lt. Hyde, the young people of this country, and the real core everyday bedrock people of our country was very powerful and affirming. It said that our country is in much better shape than most of the current news would have you believe. Glen Jenkins B 2/35 RVN 67-68

3321. I was in Washington DC today flying our Nations colors and to counter a Socialist/Communist Demonstration by Code Pink, IWVATW (Iraq War Veterans Against the War) and Answer to name just a few. Several of us were representing the Gathering of Eagles at the Vietnam Memorial, when I spotted our own Doc Hall wearing the Cacti colors and 4th Div. hat. I introduced myself and we talked for several minutes. I made two impressions of our cacti brother Mike Branin KIA LZ Jean Nov 13, 1968 that I will forward to his family members.

3320. I was only seven years old when my brother, Walter Earl Duncan, Jr. came home in the large crate I now preserve in storage. Unfortunately, I have so few memories of him, and even fell asleep at the memorial service so missed the final viewing. Our daddy, Walter E Duncan Sr. went to join his two sons in their Heavenly Home in July 2008. My mama, Mary, age 93, just left in February 2009 determined they were waiting for her. I appreciate greatly the archives that the Cacti website has on hand, and have researched for After Action Reports that he may have been part of. I would like to know anything more about Earl that anyone would know and care to share. A few years ago, a comrade in arms, Jack Frost, contacted my parents. They were so pleased to talk to him and gain firsthand knowledge. Perhaps he or others have recollections of Earl that could add to his life story that I could pass on to my four sons. Thanks.

3318. This morning as I look at the Cacti KIA deaths that occured on this date in history, I note that it includes Benjamin Lee IV. Benjamin was a medic from Oak Ridge, TN serving with the 1/35th and was killed by small arms fire on March 17, 1966. He is one of the few Vietnam KIA's for which we still do not have a photo for his Memorial Page. I've got to believe that someone out there has a photo of Benjamin. It may not be a photo of Benjamin by himself but that's OK. If you have him as part of a group photo and can point him out of the group we need this photo to complete our Memorial Page for him. If you have any photo of Benjamin please contact me at the e-mail address below. Please help us to properly honor this hero.--Doc Hall

3316. 1st LT Daniel B. Hyde, an Alpha Co platoon leader, will have closed casket visitation at the Franklin and Downs McHenry Chapel, 1050 McHenry Ave., on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. for Daniel Hyde, the 24-year-old Modesto Army lieutenant who was killed in Iraq on Saturday. The graveside service will be March 20 at 2 p.m. at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson. A memorial celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church, 12th and M streets, on March 21 at 11 a.m. Remembrances can be sent to Thomas Downey High School for the Daniel B. Hyde Memorial Scholarship Fund, 1000 Coffee Road, Modesto 95355 "He wasn't the smartest guy or the best athlete, but he would work you underneath the table," Cole said. "He was the best leader you could ask for. He came into the huddle with a big smile on his face no matter the score." Isn't that the highest praise, really, to greet life's knockdown pitch with a grin and a line drive up the middle? Hyde's 24 years will be celebrated next week for those reasons. Because what else do you do when Superman dies for his country? http://www.modbee.com/featured/story/630702.html

3312. It is my sad duty to report that the Cacti has lost another hero. 1st LT Daniel B. Hyde, an Alpha Co platoon leader, was killed in action in Iraq on Saturday March 7. Lt Hyde was from Modesto, CA. Funeral arrangements are not complete but it is presumed that services will be held in that area. If you are a Cacti living in the area we are looking for someone to represent the Association at the services. Complete instructions on what this encompasses will be given. It is not difficult but, of course, is very emotional. However, it is also a very rewarding experience. A couple dozen of your Cacti Brothers have performed this service in the last couple of years. if you are in the area and feel that you can help us to honor this hero please contact me at jimdochall@yahoo.com. -- Doc Hall

For those that don't know I took a buyout from Xerox last December, and ended my 35 yesr run with them. Unfortunately, the work computer was my sole source of access at the time and it's taken some time to unwind and get ready to access the world again, The other unfortunate aspect of leaving Xerox is I left behind my email address bokks. So, if you want to contact me - it's Bravo16India@rochester.rr.com. Feel free to pass it on to other Cacti - especially those form Bravo 2/35 1st platoon. It's good to be back and hopefully I'll be rebuilding that address book shortly. Cacti Forever and Reno awaits. Slyck
