Pvt. Walter A. Miller, Hill 31, Gifu Strong Point, British Solomon Islands, January 25, 1943 (diary date) The following quote is from diary of Sgt Tom F Hardin.

"Nothing has happened except the usual things in the past few days. Our men have the Japs surrounded, and we have been trying to knock the Japs' pill-boxes out. We lose a few men every day from wounds, sickness, and death. (Pvt. Walter A.) Miller was killed yesterday. He lay here in the Mortar Platoon last night as by the time our men were able to get him out of the machine gun lane it was almost dark. He was killed while we were trying to knock some Jap pill-boxes out. He never knew what hit him. He was shot through the eye, and the bullet came out the back of his head. Where the bullet went into the corner of his right eye next to the nose there was only a very small blue hole. Where it came out the back of his head there was a hole larger than a silver dollar...When the order was sent in to bury Miller, all of the boys who were around disappeared as if by magic and left the job to (Pfc. Joseph E.) Mitchell, (Medic) Dr. Luts, and myself."
