TO THE BEST FRIEND and BROTHER EVER!
From a letter written to my wife 6/19/69 Well today I lost my dearest friend in this country of war. This morning I will help to carry Mike away to a freedom bird. Such freedom! Over here Mike was the most to me. We had become the closest of friends, brother and now we will not talk about his Mama or Jan anymore. You remember that poem I sent you from the girl named Jan. She was to marry Mike next August. She wrote That Distant Shore and I wrote an answer for Mike. He was so pleased, said that someday they would set in their home and show their children my famous book with Mamas poem she wrote to daddy in Vietnam. Just more useless dreams. Today as always I think of Mike and his dreams with great love. My brother you may not have lived out your dreams but you were and you are loved and missed. Love you Daddy Jim
