Summary: The log was opened at 0001 hours 9 October 1968. Unit locations: At LZ Joan; A Company, B Company, B Battery 1/92 Artillery, C Btry 1/92 Artillery, C Btry 7/15 Artillery; At LZ Jean; D Company, C Company, A Brty 2/9 Artillery, 1 CSF platoon from the Special Forces Camp at Duc Co; At LZ Mary Lou; Recon Plt OPCON 1/14 Inf, 4.2 inch Mortar Plt OPCON 1/14 Inf; At Base Camp (Camp Enari) Battalion Headquarters (rear), E Company (-). At 0830 hours the Battalion Commander LTC Buckner airborne made a visual reconnaissance of LZ Virginia Lee. In preparation for Task Force Down Craft the following units are participating; C Company, A Brty 2/9 Artillery, 2 CSF platoons from the Special Forces Camp at Duc Co, 1 scout dog platoon. Task Forces Down Craft started with the first lift-off LZ Jean at 0925 hours with C Company making a C/A to LZ Virginia Lee. The lift was completed for all units at 1715 hours. At 1020 hours C Company reported that one (1) of their individuals had stepped on a mine resulting in the individual receiving a broken ankle. Engineers were sent out from LZ Jean with mine sweeping equipment to sweep the area. Mines believed to be US type M-14 and M-16. At 1400 hours an EM from 2/9 Artillery stepped on a mine. At 1625 hours an EM from the Engineers element stepped on a mine with the extent of his injury unknown at this time. Message for Bde: At 1350 hour C Company sighted one (1) individual with a weapon. Individual disappeared before he could be engaged with fire. At 1351 hours C Company reported spotting 2 individuals moving outside of the perimeter. Individuals were taken under fire with M-79's and M-16's. There were no casualties reported. Artillery was requested but it was not ready to fire at the time of the contact or individual sightings.
