4.2 mortar platoon LZ Oasis

Summary: Log opened at 0001 hours 29 April 1969. Unit locations: At LZ Oasis grid ZA117277; Battalion Headquarters (Forward), A Company (-) at ZA084364; B Company (-) at ZA091366; C Company (-) at ZA104340; D Company (-) at ZA114397; Recon at ZA092219; 4.2 mortar platoon at LZ Oasis; Headquarters and Headquarters Company Support (S-4 Forward) at LZ Oasis; At Base Camp (Camp Enari); Battalion Headquarters (Rear).

At 1250 hours on 29 Apr 69 the Recon platoon at ZA104220 found a trail running north and south. There were Ho Chi Minh sandal tracks and the trail was used within the last 24 to 48 hours. The recon is moving out at this time. Tracks ran south to north by the use of 2 to 3 individuals and Recon moved in the direction of the tracks. At 1815 hours 2nd platoon B Company on 29 Apr 69 found a large trail running north to south. It was crossed by a smaller trail running west to east. Location of the junction was ZA067373 and smaller trail was used in the past 24 to 48 hours. Larger trail was used in the past and looked as if 30 to 50 people used it to travel north. The small trail looked as if 6 to 10 persons used to travel west. There will be 2-squad size Bushmasters at the trail junction.

0827 hours (C) From Recon to TOC -DELAYED ENTRY- On 29 Apr 69 at 0814 hours they reported hearing small arms of M-60, M-79 1 1/2 clicks to 2 1/2 clicks from their location ZA 115 degrees. They asked Bde if friendlies were in the vicinity of ZA108200 at 1120 hours and Bde said closest one 3 clicks east.

1330 hours (C) D Co reports hearing automatic weapons 500 meters west of the 53A location. Approximate ZA098424.

1536 hours (C) B Co reports that EM slashed his right leg with a machete. Cpt. Scott's LOH will pick him up and take him to the 4th Med. Injured EM is SP4 William M. Hoelle.

1745 hours (C) From B Co Proposed plans sent to S3: The CP will remain in the same location and prepare a LZ. The 1st Plt. Working to the south of the CP will conduct detailed squad sized search operations to the southeast and then return to the CP. The 2nd platoon will establish patrol base vicinity ZA067373 and conduct detailed squad sized search operations to the north; area generally bounded by grid ZA0637. The 3d platoon will establish patrol base vicinity ZA072384 and conduct detailed squad sized search operations, generally bounded by grid ZA0738. They anticipate the search of the areas indicated would take a minimum of 2 days and on the third day they will re-locate the CP 1 kilometer to the south and conduct search operations.

2220 hours (C) From TOC to all Co Commanders: The 1/35th will conduct a Bn operation in the vicinity of Plei Me Specials Forces Camp beginning 1 May and ending 4 or 5 May. Positioning of units will begin tomorrow (3) morning. On 1 May units will be trucked to LZ Oasis. Units will be moved by Ch-47 to Plei Me. The CA will begin as units close Plei Me. Instructions for 30 Apr to A Co are: Move by foot from the present location to ZA077313. B Co is to move their unit to the nearest shipping LZ ASAP for extraction to ZA087312. C Co is to move by foot to coordinate ZA103306. D Co is to move to the nearest 3 ship LZ ASAP for extraction to ZA108296. We need an acknowledgement from all units.
