Summary: Log opened at 0001 hours 1 November 1968. Unit locations: At LZ Joan YA842251, Battalion Headquarters (Forward), B Battery 1/92 Artillery, E Company Recon Platoon 1/35 Infantry, E Company 4.2 Mortar platoon 1/35 Infantry, Counter Mortar Section 2/9 artillery; 1st Platoon D Co 4th Engineers Battalion, At LZ Jean YA809235; C Company 1/35, D Company 1/35, 1 CSF platoon from the Special Forces Camp at Duc Co, C Battery 2/9 Artillery, 1 AN/TPS-25 section from Division artillery; At LZ Vera YA835178, A Company 1/35 OPCON to 3/8 Infantry, At LZ Oasis; Headquarters and Headquarters Company Support (S-4 Forward); At Base Camp (Camp Enari); Battalion Headquarters (Rear). During the reporting several sightings were made of rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft within our A/O starting at 0156 hours through 0655 hours and again at 2305 hours through 2358 hours aircraft appeared to be heading west. Frag orders was sent to C Company from the S-3, have a platoon (-) conduct a sweep to the south of LZ Jean starting at 1000 hours and completing at 1700 hours. The platoon will sweep the following areas grids 8122, 8120, 8320 and 8322. Sitrep will go to this Headquarters every hour. The following intelligence will be reported, possible chopper sighting landing at night location, effect of artillery fired in this area during the last 2 days, any activity in the last few days. Be prepared to reinforce with the entire Company if the platoon makes contact with a large force. The platoon reported to the S-3 after the sweep was completed the following findings: Footprints heading in a northerly direction 50 meters circle of grass blown down, grass was cut down further around the circle, 4 other areas of 50 meters at grid YA814215. The patrol reported finding a night location that had been used in the last 48 hours. SRP team 2 reported sighting 2 individuals at grid s at grid YA836266 and they had heavy movement at grid YA824264. Artillery and light organics were employed; the rounds were on target and the movement stopped. Message from the Commanding General 4th Infantry Division Major General Charles P. Stone to the Bn CO LTC Buckner; Public relations guidance against North Vietnam. From President Johnson 0900 hours 1 November 1968: Effective immediately- All Commanders will insure US Military and civilian or their command to refrain from any comments whatsoever on this matter to the press or public. These instructions will be passed to all personal immediately. Commanders and Information Officers if queried about the effect in South Vietnam of cessation of offensive operations against North Vietnam will reply that the President's announcement speaks for itself. Our operations will continue in South Vietnam on the present basis, if queried considering the extent of South Vietnamese participation the reply will be that I have nothing to add to the President's statement. All activities were routine and were coordinated by our staff.
